Looks like I will be able to make it Friday, Saturday and part of Sunday. I'm looking forward to finally meeting some of the SoCal crowd. I can't believe it's taken me this long to make a Mojave event.

It seems from the event page that you are quite concerned about communication. I would say your justified from things that have happened in the past.

May I suggest that everyone bring their own two way radios? So we can have at least one per vehicle? Those things are so popular almost everybody has a pair, I think I have 4 myself.

What was wrong with my write-up?

Basically: If you have a FRS bubblepack radio, monitor Channel 4, Tone 17. If you have a CB radio, monitor Channel 38. Simple enough.

After consulting with the Radio guy at my work, he recommends Motorola EM1000R radios as a good entry level product. They come with rechargeable batteries, which can also be replaced with standard AA batteries in a pinch. You can get a charger stand that plugs into the wall, and car chargers that utilize cigg lighter ports. They are FRS/GMRS. If you use the GMRS channels, you technically need a FCC license, but in Mojave and Death Valley, it should not be a problem.

Saturday, Donny, is Shabbos, the Jewish day of rest. That means that I don't work, I don't get in a car, I don't fucking ride in a car, I don't pick up the phone, I don't turn on the oven, and I sure as shit don't fucking roll!

With any handheld radio, just keep in mind that just because the package has "30-50 mile" range on it, doesn't mean it's the truth. Usually, the range is about 10-20% of what the package claims unless you have direct line of sight and perfect conditions. If there are mountains, hills or other obstacles in the way, you will have zero range.

I've tried this with several radios over the years (cheapie ones and expensive ones) over various terrains. Just wanted to throw this out there for anybody buying a radio and for any expectations. Expect 3 mile range. 5 if you're lucky and if we can get 10 or 15 mile range, that means The Great Glort is magnifying our transmission for us and we will give him a burnt offering.

People are weird.

Very true regarding the range. In the Mojave area, I think 3 miles is a good expectation. The area is relatively flat, and there is little to cause interference, besides geographical features.
