well so much for my super awesome top secret location that nobody else knew about. I'm so glad I was able to see it before it was gone. Sigh. I'll put in the good ol' schedule request and we'll see what will happen. I'm sure it's not an option but is there any way we can do this on a full moon?

| | | FRS/GMRS radios use only 1 watt of power at most. The majority have 500mW (half watt) on them. In the city, their signal prolly works within 1 mile radius. In the desert, you can get a good 10-15 miles if there are no obstructions. The GMRS license is required regardless of how you use it. Why? Because a GMRS license grants you use of commercial equipment that can go up to 50 watts and allows you to use repeater systems (like mine) on high mountains (like mine) to be used over 80 miles (like mine). A 4 watt portable radio in the city can travel roughly 3-4 mile radius, and the desert will give it a good 15-25 mile radius. -- I'll have my mobile radio, which is a 35w. So You'll hear me a good 30+ miles away but I won't be able to hear you. lol I frankly don't care much if people are licensed or not on the crappy bubblepacks, but when they interfere with repeater systems and licensed GMRS users, then licensed people like myself track them down and file a report with the FCC/local PD. Anyhoo, using them in the desert should be fine. lol

At least it's a 3/4 moon that weekend. As usual I forgot to look at the cycles. Sorry but set in stone now.

If it were one weekend earlier, i would have made it with the truck, full size BBQ, 55 gallon water drum, and everything. Rob, the moon sucks balls that date BTW. Its nowhere near 3/4 moon, its more like a fingernail sliver. [last edit 2/25/2010 8:40 AM by big dave - edited 1 times]

Wow you're right about there being no moon. I must have been looking at the wrong calendar. Anyway, next time I'll plan the trip all around ya. I'll have Cam give you foot massages ever night. I'll be waiting to fetch your slippers.

What was wrong with my write-up? Basically: If you have a FRS bubblepack radio, monitor Channel 4, Tone 17. If you have a CB radio, monitor Channel 38. Simple enough.
|
Ah. It helps to read the ENTIRE event page and not just the good stuff like where we will be headed. But hey, at least now I know like 1000% more about radios than before! I don't know about you guys but I'm stoked, this sounds like its gonna be a good trip. Camping + Exploring stuff are my two favorite things. Too bad we've got to wait another month!

| | | So if anybody from the Bay area is interested in carpooling down I'm totally game for both gas and driving and if nobody's got a car going in on a rental as well, though of course the most efficient vehicle for highway driving won't be the same as the best vehicle for desert driving. Anyways, just putting it out there. Otherwise I might fly into Vegas and try and carpool from there. Any takers?

| | | I'd like to go, but I have only a 2WD car and no radio. Is there any chance I could drop off vehicle and catch a carpool Saturday morning in Kelso? Edit: Hmmm, just occurred to me that I'd need to get back to my car at some point to return to AZ by Monday, and the group will be moving away from Kelso. | | | Ya know, you could always leave it at the camp, unless we move every night. Or just drive it out there, and if we come to a place you can't make it at, we can tote you around and pick your vehicle back up before we leave the area. -- A thought.

Selective word grab can be such a tedious thing. damn! =P
There's a good chance I wont be able to make it to the April Mojave trip =( I've got another trip scheduled that same weekend, at the last moment, and didnt realize it was the same time frame. Unless something gets swapped on my trip, Im not gonna be able to make it.
