Im surprised you didnt keep crackin on my Pathfinder when the trans kept overheating on that trip to Gold Mountain. Funny how it ran perfect in 2nd gear.

that was kinda funny... I got my windshield washed... with trans fluid It was still a great trip.. even after we ended up trying a 4 star, most difficult rated trail...backwards....in unmodified 4x4's. We made it a good long ways, and if it hadn't been for that damned rock wall (and I still say we could have gone around it) I think we could have gone 100%.

So I'm thinking about going...I'm really interested in the idea of rappelling down those mines, although I've never done it before. Will there be any training of some sort?

Also, I have a 4x4 96 Jeep Cherokee. Does that make the cut to go out into the desert or do I need like a 10 foot leaf spring lift and 102" wheels?

And for you bay area UERs, I live in Santa Rosa and I'm down to carpool in exchange for gas moneys

You're perfectly fine. The roads are not really that bad.

I usually take my Pathfinder with 31's and its been more than required at times. A stock Jeep would be all you need.

High clearance is a must for certain locations but if you don't have it we can always shuttle. Someone was asking about hotel locations. If you are on the 15 there are two wife beaters for 40-60 dollars in Baker. If you are heading north the best bet is in Barstow.

You mean the one that overheats and sprays other people with trans fluid?

Wow, I just looked at the event page again and there are a ton of people sitting on the fence. It's either going to be just a handful of people or a shitload. Either way, I took Friday and Monday off of work today! Gotta love a four day weekend.

I'm coming on Saturday, hoping someone can shuttle me when my corolla can't make it.

I'll be bringing hot dogs, buns, other food I can get my hands on.

Sounds great. Remember to meet us at the Kelso Depot. I think you won't have a problem finding anyone. Uer member tend to...stick out. I think on Saturday you'll be pretty good as far as shuttling. That night's campsite (Riley's) can be done very carefully in a sedan. But it will be pretty dark. We'll figure it out when we get, there I guess. I treat my car like an amusement park and forget other people may not have the same style. Anyway, cheers!

My friend and I are very interested in going on this trip but we've only done mild explorations (in suburbia and occasional urban environments) in the bay area. Definitely not pros at this.

I like the neat schedule but all this talk about 4x4 and walkie talkies is very intimidating. Could anyone here offer some in-depth guidance as to how these get-togethers work?

Sorry for posting without really having made a name for myself on this site. I could tell you more and share some pictures if we get to interact, though!

Oh that's easy.

4x4's get you places that are not accessible via normal types of transportation, such as a ferarri, mustang, or vw beetle.

The radios are for communicating between vehicles/groups/people in areas where there is very little, or likely NO cell reception.

Capiche?

Basically, everyone meets up in different spots and then together at the main spot during different times, some arrive early and thus are "first" and other straggle in.

Everyone meets eachother, talks a bit, swaps war stories and lies, and those unfortunate enough to fall asleep first are violated in every way known to man (and possibly, with this group, in some ways which aren't well known at all)

The next morning, everyone meets, then the exploration of the first area starts, according roughly to the schedule timelined on the event page.

Each night everyone regroups (some in one place, possibly some close by), and the whole things starts over the next day, thus, until completion finally comes about and everyone (hopefully) goes home tired, happy, and with lots of new stories (and lies) to tell everyone back home who didn't get to go.

FUN!

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

You're more than welcome to if you'd like. It's only a 50/50 chance that I'm actually going to this event. If I can answer something for you I'd love to help you out though, or refer you to someone who can.
