Details
Expect a massive expedition covering nearly all the highlights of the preserve and more. You want Rock-a-hoola you got it. You want deep mines you got it. You want ghost towns you got it. You want 60 ft. bon fires you got. This is no normal event ladies and gentleman but will be massive outdoor adventure. And I'll once again stick to my guns and say rain or shine. But thank goodness there will be no more mother @&%$ing snow. Again, if it goes boom, bring it. Pmorodi will surely put it between his cheeks...again. CHEERS!!!

This will be a 4 day event, starting on Friday, April 9th. Come and go as you please. No person is expected to stay for the whole event. It is an extended weekend to provide flexibility for shift workers, students, ect.

Due to possible communication breakdowns, the driver of each car will be required to meet before each location move. They will be responsible for passing the word down to their passengers and organizing their own micro group. Senior explorers (1+ years) will also be included in the >5 min pow-wows. Railguy will be second in command and can answer any last minute questions if I can't be found (or am passed out drunk).

Communication structure:
1st: Rob
2ed: Railguy88 + Shockwave
3rd: Car drivers
4th: Passengers

A small power generator will travel with us. Only use if necessary.

If you are a driver please, please, please bring a spare tire. Just in case. I've only hit a yucca once but you never know.

If you can't bring a high clearance car or truck plan on doing some carpooling at locations. Friday's camp requires high clearance to access.

Each person will be required to provide their own supplies: food, gas, sleeping, warmth, ect. If you can, please bring extra to share. Hamburgers & dogs a win! So are sausages, bacon and eggs for the mornings.

For the love of god top off on gas before entering the park. A warning though: secluded gas stations will charge $4.00 a gallon. Baker for northern arrivals and Ludlow for southern arrivals are your best bet.

If you are planning on spending more than 2 nights I recommend at least one night at a motel in Baker. $40-$75. A shower, T.V. and real bed helps one get through the last push. The desert is ALWAYS more draining than you one thinks. Trust me on this.

We should all agree to monitor channel 38 on CB.
And channel 4 on the toy's. It will help keep us all on the same page while traveling. Dangers, history, who farted in what car, ect.

!!!! Expect nights to dip into the mid 40s. You think you have enough clothing until you slow down and try sleeping. Then you're %$#@ed. !!!!

We didn't get a chance to do any rope work last time but I currently am training and hope to do some with others.

If it blows up bring it. We've never lost an eye or finger...yet...

Last but not least: go wild. As long as you stick to our time frame and descend mines with the group, pretty much anything goes. There's a very good reason people first came out to the desert. To be free!

Friday
12:30: Meet at Mitchell's caverns
1:30: Tour the caves $4
4:30: Bonanza king camp arrival and explore (8.5/10)
7:30: "Hole In the Wall" Night photographers can stay later than main group.

Saturday
8:30 Leave camp (sorry so early)
9:30 Cima ghost town
10:00 Death Valley Mine
11:30 Kelso Depot (Saturday arrivals can meet us here. Be early!!!)
1:00 Lava tube. The sun will create amazing shafts of light for portraits.
2:30: Aiken Mine
4:30 Baker stop for supplies. Between Aiken and Evening Star is a 45 mile drive. Good point to refill on gas. Avg. $3.30
5:30 Evening Star Mine
6:45 Sussana mine
8:00 Riley's Camp set up
10:30 New Era Mine #2

SIDE RAPEL TRIPS: Saturday's camp will be nearby several shafts once sealed by the park service but due to erosion are currently open for rapelling. I have never attempted these and have no garauntees on what may or may not be seen. I can provide a guess, on each, though. If people do choose to do them, a "GROUP LEADER"...MUST!!! ...issue a verbal flight plan to BOTH myself and the seconds and 1 written document issued to me stating intent, times, ect.

Sunday
Morning: Riley area mop up and free roam. Highly recommend waking early to take advantage of this incredible site.
10:15: Leave camp
11:00 Desert Graveyard
11:30 Standard Mine #2
1:00 Kokoweef, active mining town.
3:00 Mohawk and Copper World Mines (8.5/10)
6:00 Goldome Mine camp and explore (9/10)
8:00 60 ft. bonfire and fireworks!!!
More to come...

Rock-a-hoola

More to come...

This event will be updated NEARLY daily so keep checking back :)

THE RAILGUY88 SECTION:

Radios - What to bring/Uses/Cost:

There have been a few asking what kind of radios to bring to this event. Most explorers bring FRS bubblepacks (or family radios seen at Best Buy or Radio Shack), which are used between vehicles or persons on a large event. They are compatible with all other FRS radios on the market, and you can assign private codes to the channels so that radios with this code can only talk to you and the group.

There are also FRS/GMRS combo radios, but I highly recommend not using the GMRS channels as they are license-only channels (usually 15-22 on combo packs).

The desert is also very friendly to CB radios, and can travel much farther than these FRS radios. CB is very handy for vehicles, especially when they have antennas on the outside of the vehicle (vs FRS radios which have built-in antennas, and can't go as far). CB radios have 40 channels to choose from, and if your CB radio has sideband or SSB capabilities, then that's an extra 80 channels with more power output.

Since the desert is pretty much flat (no buildings or major hills), your radios will travel much farther with only a few watts. Why is this important to know? Because FRS radios are on a higher frequency and have a shorter wavelength, whereas CB radios are on a low frequency and have a longer wavelength. Thus the longer the wavelength, the farther the signal will travel. CB radios will work much better on the road and inside mines/caves, and FRS radios will work on level land and within the campsite.

Either radio you choose, this trip will have both. CB radios cost between $20-99, and FRS radios cost $15 and up (they also come in pairs vs single CB radio). The majority will have FRS radios, but CB is also an option (and is fun to use with truckers along the way).
