I went to Skagg's last night after work.

From the HWY 37 (south entrance) there is a new gate that has been installed. It is a serious gate, stronger and more robust than the first gate that was present. The new gate also has many new "no tresspassing" type signs (which are all adorned with grafitti).

One could still hop the fence but this would require quite a bit of walking (which isn't so bad). However if caught out there, you'd definitely not have any excuse about not knowing it was private, etc..

I actually understand and feel the frustration of the authority who have installed the new gate. In just the past 6 months Skagg's has suffered quite a bit of grafitti, vandalism, and destruction from people who don't care about it's history but just want to engage in destruction. I am all for protecting historic and notable sites from these low-lifes (even if that means it's more of a risk for us to explore).

It would be nice if that were the reason they put up the new gate, but the whole base is slated for demolition and restoration as a wetland, so I don't think they really care about preserving the place. It's probably just a liability issue for them.

Thanks for the update.

I should have taken a photo, but bolt cutters may not work. The gate had some serious metal shielding around the locks on each side of the gate. The gate was made of large tubular steel and was about 5-6' tall.

the best way would be to enter through the cyclone fencing on either side of the gate -you'd have to go through some brush to get there, etc...

personaly I think easiest way is by foot and hiking around.

I wonder if this makes the North Entrance better. When I was there in the winter there was a hole cut in the fence. It was in the fence separating Skaggs from the farm by the North Entrance gate. As you approach the gate you would have to walk left following the fence to find it. Not sure if it's still there.

I wouldn't recommend going out there anymore. When I got caught, the guards weren't messing around at all. And all they had seen 1 of the 4 people I was with jump over the fence....

My friend thinks he found a number of someone who could get us access, but he's reluctant to call. I'm going to see about it though, because as summer draws near, nothing sounds better than walking around at Skaggs.

yep, skagg's seems like there is a lot of activity with the new gate, redevelopment, and guards randomly patrolling the area... I'd bet they are pretty serious about security (now).

glad i got out there when it was easier to access.

I belive much of UER'ing relies on a bit taking the opportunity when it is available. A lot of these places have a certain window of opportunity for exploration... and once the window closes it becomes quite difficult.

To all,
I pass by the south road leading to Skaggs Island twice a day during my commute. Three weeks ago, there was a rather large fire on the north side of the south gate bridge. I did'nt get close to it, as it was around 0445, and I figured it was either a Mafia hit, or insurance fraud, and I was not armed to deal with either. I drove past lots of trash which scumbags have dumped, to the foot of the south side of the bridge; the fire was going pretty good too. I made a U turn and continued on to work, after notifying the local authorities.
I returned two days later to snap this photo; it appears to have been a vehicle, perhaps a trailer, and it must have burned pretty darned hot to melt like it did...

dang!

no wonder this place has become difficult to explore... everyone goes out there to dumb their sh*t and/or shoot guns (I've found a zillion ammo shells), etc...

Just read all 5 pages of this thread. Driven by both Mare and Skaggs plenty of times going between Santa Rosa and Davis my whole life. Never stopped and checked out either. Would be interested in tagging along.

I worked for an environmental engineering and consulting firm in Santa Rosa for a long time and went out into the field to check out some cool Sonoma/Mendo County sites. Everything from abandoned gas stations, busted meth labs, old hop barns, bulldozed junkyards to semi-rural abandoned buildings and houses. Most were already undergoing destruction, but Next time I am in Santa Rosa area I will do some scouting for Y'all.

In the mean time, I see billboards now for Mare Island tract housing. I would be happy to tag along with anyone here to some of these sites you've explored. My social engineering and "act naturally" skills are very well honed, even though I am still pretty green. I would love to see Mare and Skaggs before they're demolished.

Mare Island is pretty easy to explore, in fact I am not even completely sure that it's illegal to explore many of the places. -Be sure to check out the very southern part of Mare Island ..that's where some of the best exploring is.

Skagg's is a tough place to explore now. (since serious gates have been installed and security has been beefed up).

Not sure when/if I'll be visiting Mare Island again...I've been out there about a dozen times... I've pretty much explored every square inch.

(I've got my sites set on some old mining stuff in Death Valley at the moment -thanks to Rapcw's wonderful photo's)

According to the CLUI,

"Access to the former base is still controlled by guards in booths, but those visiting one of the companies, organizations, or institutions on base are granted access without delay."

;) I'd like to go check it out, the one time I was there was by accident, when I first came out here to the bay a few months ago. I was on my motorcycle too, that grilled causeway bridge is the suck on a bike.

CLUI is a great resource, but from what I've seen, it's way out of date on almost everything I've ever looked up. Stuff just changes too fast for them to keep up.

I was literally over the bridge and immediately back again, it was very obviously not where I meant to go. There was a cop there that day too, but I didn't look closely at anything, and turned around right at the island side of the bridge. I didn't even realize what the place was (other than not where i was headed that day, I was trying to find a rental) until I looked at a map the other night and thought "Whoa, that's that place!"

Though remembering back, it did feel pretty lonely and underminded that day, is it pretty much off limits lately or would I have a shot at getting in if I made a daytime trip, do you think?

Here's an intriguing idea for some people. I'm probably going to try it some day soon.

Off of Hwy 121, I believe it is, there's a street called Millerick Road, if you know Sonoma, it's basically at the end of Broadway.

If you drive down Millerick, all the way past the winery, there is a dirt road that goes on for a ways. Eventually, you'll get to a barrier across the road. It is still legal to go past there, it's just flooded.

This is the road to the ghost town of Wingo.

There is a large field covered in deep water all the way across, making access to Wingo impossible.

Once you walk to the edge of the lake, if you look southwest, you'll see a water tower. One that should seem familiar to Skaggs visitors....

So what I'm thinking is..... This lake stretches a long ways across, and Skaggs is surrounded by a couple of different waterways. An inflatable raft(that's heavy-duty) should be able to withstand the mild brush, and etc you should encounter along the way.

On Google Earth, I've seen that Sonoma Creek, which runs along Millerick, connects to different creeks that run right by the boat dock at Skaggs.

So it is extremely possible to get to Skaggs, and NOT go by the "do not enter" signs, therefore making it legal.

I'm going to test this theory soon. Then I'll get back to you all.

Just a note to confirm that this place is still patrolled--even entry from the north is difficult now. My guess is that the farmer by the north gate is calling in the cops/rangers when they see people there, and they respond to calls even when it's 12:30 on Sunday night over Labor Day weekend...

Might have to give that boating access idea some more thought.
