I've visited skaggs a few times, always from the south entrace. I've encountered some strange characters on two occassions. On the last trip there was this drugged out guy beating his car with a bat. He could barely walk, from a distance I thought he was beating on my Jeep and was freaked out. As I got closer I saw that he was parked behind me and it was his car he was beating on. Anyway, skagg's has a lot to check out.

I actually like nearby Mare Island a lot better... much more to see.

Oh about a week or so I went out there on the way back from duck huntin. I went in from the south entrance (Hwy 37). At first I had parked my van before the bridge and proceeded to walk up on the bridge to see if it was still one peice (Ya never know)When I got to the crest I was looking around for a while and then a green Chevy Tahoe witha yellow light on top and DOD lic. plate drove acrossed the bridge while waving at me. So I was like cool and hopped in my van and drove it. The gate was wide open. I went as far as the "NAVESGRAUCT" sign, then I dont know if I was nervous or what but I had to take a shit so I turned around and went back and proceeded back home.

I'm going back tommorow as long as it isnt pouring down rain with my digi camera.

I really want to find out more about this place for a possible Airsoft game before it is demolished.

Been there a few times over the last two years. You can really see the destruction by vandals done just over the last few months. The administration building has recently been burned out. I too saw construction vehicles on site. Some are survey crews for the preparation of the demolition of the structures now that the land is going through the final stages of being returned to its former marsh state by the Bay Conservation and Development Commission. I accessed the area with a bike and got around the gates before they were opened within the last few months. Both the elephant ring and the communications buildings have the holes that the Navy Seals left behind during their practicing. A really fascinating place that is rich with history over its 50 years of existance.

I was at Skaggs yesterday. (Tuesday) I took over 100 pictures, I'll probably be going back soon. It's a shame they're tearing it down. I'm just curious, what exactly is the elephant circle or whatever it's called?

The "Elephant Cage" is an antenna. There was a large circle of steel poles around the building on the south east side, where the large cooling towers are, and which housed the radio equipment. Inside that cage was another, shorter circle of steel poles, which were also antennas. The name of this antenna system is actually called a "classic bullseye", of which a complete description can be found here:

http://www.fas.org...assic_bullseye.htm

There is nothing left of the classic bullseye today.

I have not been there for a couple of months, have they actually started demolition yet?

No, the demolition hasn't started yet. It's a damn shame that it is happening at all. The bulldozers that were by the communications building are gone. I was there a few days ago, and I saw a truck that said VT Griffin on the side of it. I wasn't sure why they were driving through there, so I just booked it out.

They did not bother me when I was there last. I was parked next to the dorms in the chow hall parking lot on my dirt bike, and was taking pictures. They drove by a few times, and must have known I was not out there to ruin what little was left. They glanced in my direction but just kept on driving by....

Then again, it could be the AK-47 I had strapped to my back.

HA HA! What the hell? How did you get your hands on one, and why would you want one while UE'ing?

I thought in California you need a special law enforcement permit for those things, or something...

Permits? I don't need no stinkin' permit! The AK-47 is to fend off dangerous attack deer.

Very dangerous animals, and poisonous.

more likely an 47 Clone (Romanian, Czech?) semi-auto.... full-auto would require a class 3 license (Ha good luck ever getting one) and would be a MAJOR federal felony if you ever got caught with an unregistered full-auto...

Skaggs status is in limbo. Navy won't accept liability for any toxics found post-transfer, and other agencies won't accept under those terms. They also need to find a way to buy out the hay farm before they can restore it to wetlands.

Channel 5 did a brief segment on it the other night. Vid is here:

Thanks JBuss! I was wondering about that... Not that I would want one... don't really own any guns myself. I shoot with my camera.

Nah..I haven't been back. Just seem to have heard noises every night there. And I'm not going anywhere for a while anyway, sniff, sniff. My D70 has BGLOD (blinking green light of death) and needs to go in for service. (pass the kleenex, please).

I feel sad and yet vindicated at the same time. If we had spoken on the subject of Canons Vs. Nikons, I would have quietly chuckled and said, "see, I told you so." But, yes, it is a sad occassion indeed. I hope it's not an expensive fix.

Good luck.
