Tell me if this tickles
| | Re: defense <Reply # 100 on 8/15/2010 6:37 PM >
| | | On my last explore I had a chunky homemade grappling hook that I guess could be used for self defence. I don't know how effective it would be but it looked like it could mess someone's shit up so it'd be a good deterrent rather than anything. I know I'd rather not be grappled if I had the choice. I doubt I really would have taken a swing at anyone with the hook, I'm more of a "Make love not war" kinda guy. Then again I haven't made love to anyone with a grappling hook either.

Well, the article did say "30-inch long". My screen is only 22", but even that would be rather big...

| | | Speaking of defense... some guy was yelling at me for trespassing a while back (ok I was on a roof)... and I unleashed my weapon. yes, I pulled down my pants and whipped out my dick. Best distraction ever. he hesitated for like 20 seconds and we got the fuck out. the end.

| | | I have a stun gun that I usually carry with me for personal safety. Considering bringing it with me for urbex but about the only thing it would do is protect against hobos/crazies and possibly dogs, while making it look worse if I got caught. Would a knife be better, as it's more versatile?

Survival/Rescue knife. They are good utility tools anyway. My advice with a knife, as it's a really risky/touchy subject is to leave it as a very last resort. Don't introduce it into a situation unless you -know- your life is in danger and it is the -only- way you can defend yourself. Know your state bladed weapon laws and the self defense laws of the state (there are some states where if someone attacks you barehanded, you can only defend yourself barehanded otherwise it would carry a manslaughter charge and conversely there are other states where you can shoot someone for attacking you barehanded and get off scott-free). Also, if you intend on carrying a knife and may have to possibly someday maybe use it to save your life, try and get some instruction in knife combat. Having a knife, and having no idea what you are doing hand-to-hand is a pretty generally terrible idea.

My guess is that a stun gun wouldn't get you in trouble, since it's purely a defensive weapon, but you might want to check your state's laws regarding them.

A pocketknife is great for more than self-defence. However, a stun gun is purely defensive, and I wouldn't see how that would make things worse by carrying one. ***Sidetrack: I've always wanted to touch a stun gun to a door handle as someone is opening it. Don't ask me why***

| | | ive stungunned myself before. it's not that bad when it's self inflicted bc you can let go... but i could see how it would suck if someone wasnt letting off haha
and knives are pretty iffy. it's one thing to shoot in self defense bc you can distance yourself from the act. but to actually stab someone? man, that's a totally different mindset; even in self defense. i dont even want to know what it feels like to do that to someone.

| | | I normally carry a .45 with me EVERYWHERE I go (of course, everywhere that it is legal to carry...no schools, government buildings, etc.). I'm new to this hobby and I'm glad I read this thread. I never thought about it being a bad idea to carry a pistol while exploring, but now that I read this I think I'll figure out something a bit more legal to carry while trespassing. Thanks! BTW...this is my first post. WOOT! I'm really enjoying the site, and I can't wait to get a good camera and go do some 'splorin in my area.

I assume your area is down south, since you are packing from the bedroom to the shitter.
