Tripod. If you can't beat a man to death with your tripod, you need a new tripod.

I'd rather be able to climb/run/jump/crawl with my tripod than use it as a weapon.

Put spikes on your camera.

Spike-camera + tripod = morning star!

I use a Gorillapod. It's just annoying.

a 6D Maglite is plenty protection and it won't get you into trouble.

And no never had to use it, can't imagine I will but one never knows.

[edited to answer original topic, got derailed by the snazzy Maglite accessories]

My group and I have never had any issues with anything other than the random dog and the most we carry is a multitool. We feel like running is the best option and try to stay out of the areas that we feel the need to bring a weapon into. Kansas City has enough cool stuff to explore without going into the most dangerous areas.

classic rookie thread, i will reiterate what i said earlier:

homeless people: cigarettes
cops: a nice pair of nikes (or a good cry if you're a fatty)
animals: a nice pair of nikes (for a nice round-house kick to the face)
property owners: a camera (to tell them you're a photography major)

^ things you should already have. don't bring weapons unless you wanna get fucked for breaking and entering.

I do not carry anything for defensive purposes and am not really prepared to use violence to defend myself. If it's money they want, I'm more than happy to part ways with the couple of coins I usually have in my pocket. Same with the stuff I carry - I can always buy a new (used) cell phone or flashlight or, in case of more expensive equipment like cameras, get my money back through insurance. No need to get injured or killed over something that can be easily replaced. If I'm threatened with violence, I'll challenge them to a running contest - I doubt someone inhabiting an abandoned building and possibly using drugs can run that fast or far (not that I'm an athletic myself, but...). Of course if it's a non-negotiable opponent I can't outrun, such as a dangerous animal, the last line of defense is the tiny blade in my Leatherman Wave.

I try to avoid getting into such situations in which I would need to defend myself by not going alone, not exploring at the same time with Russian metal thieves and avoiding mutant/zombie/vampire-infested areas.

Guys on Crack/Meth/Heroin are goddamned FAST, you run they think your stealing theyre shit, or calling the cops, they WILL kill you.

In West Texas you should have a knife with you at all times or PD will question you what you did with your knife and why you are not carrying one.

If you don't know how to use it, a knife can quickly become the weapon of your enemy.
Expect receive cut(s) in a knife fight even if you win. Limit the damage to none vital areas; protect the neck, chest, abdomen, and tendons/ligaments at all times. Knife fights are bloody for all involved most times, do you really want to share the blood of a stranger?

Best to evade and elude, be quiet, don't smoke, and be on the lookout for people at all times. Stealth is best maintained by going alone, or with one other, and can the chatter, stay off cell phones.

If you think a place is so unsafe you need a weapon, you don't belong there.
I don't have problems dealing with strangers, but that's me.

Your security measures were inadequate.
How unfortunate for you.

in enclosed tunnel(straight, no path branching out and the other side is closed with metal gate) that i go to, only way you can go is, in or out. Some times i am afraid that i will meet someone there, although not much tagging, i been there 10+ times i never met anyone.

I always go to that tunnel with 2+ person including my self
my Kabar knife with sheath
and surefire flashlight and weak LED torch.
water and ducktape and vibram fivefingers.

system of 2+ is for safety
kabar is just in case (be safe then sorry)
surefire flashlight is really bright, so when i think i hear people i switch to weak LED torch so ppl won't notice (since idk anything about them, its all about who gets the information first)i can walk really quiet with my vibram. i just use the kabar as a bluff if necessarily. but if i learned that the people going in was 5-o then i will ducktape kabar on ceiling of little side tunnel that goes through(no body can get in there)

but that's just worst case scenario. nothing bad ever happens.

i mean i hear some people carry paintballguns but again they never saw anybody in the tunnels in general.
