to me, the need to defend one's self while exploring is a lot like needing to deal with cancer in everyday life. the chances of it happening at any particular time is extremely low, yet it's the issue people are most concerned with. yes, it's still a concern, but there are more important issues to deal with in the short term. if one is going into a high risk situation there might be more need for a defense plan, but otherwise i don't think it's anything to worry about.

i'm also a firm believer that weapons, of any type, breed violence. if you are dealing with a person and they see you have a weapon or something that could act as a weapon, they have that much more reason to use more force and violence against you to protect themselves. In the case of firearms, if you both have a gun, you have a stalemate, and the first person to shoot wins.

to answer the original question, no, i have not needed to defend myself against anything, but i do take a maglight with me in case i encounter hostile small animals

What about a bear?

Then there will be reports of sighting of a bear with a bright light shining from its ass in the local newspaper...

well, aside from the fact that bears are extremely rare in my area, there are other ways of dealing with it than trying to win a fight. things like avoiding the area if you see signs of bear activity, or if confronted, backing away slowly and escaping. animals (bears included) will rarely chase after something if they are defending themselves, their turf, etc.

obviously the only way to deal with a charging bear intent on eating you is a firearm, but usually it's far easier to simply avoid the situation altogether

I usually wear my carrier and lvl 3 plates, knee and elbow pads, but thats more for scrapes, cuts, ect while ducking into broken windows with glass still in em or hitting the ground stat if spotting sec/police. And the carrier and plates cost waaay to much to buy just for UE...

Since I do most of my exploring solo I prefer active defense. Except for recons or trips with other UEers I usually hit my POEs just before the crack of dawn. All senses rested and alert, enough light to see safely, pure quiet to listen for possible problems. Beautiful slanting sunrise light. Never encountered anyone yet.

To be honest, I'd highly suggest against having any type of weapon on your person or in your vehicle while you're committing any type of crime (including minor crimes such as trespassing). In all but few cases, this will elevate your charges to a felony level - which is something everyone should avoid!

If you feel that it is that unsafe, my best suggestion is to avoid the area all together. However, if you must carry something, select a strictly defense tool such as pepper spray. It is available from several popular outlets (Galls for instance). On a second thought, get yourself a 3D+ mag light - works as a light, and blunt force strike tool. After all, if you're holding the flashlight and are attacked, it was the first thing you could think of in your panicked state of mind. Get it? If you're caught, you simply have it for exploration purposes.

I need to invest in a large Maglite. my friend refers to them as bear clubs.
I havent ever needed to defend myself, I find that cocky white kids are more dangerous than hobos so i dont worry to much on my explores. figured if someone was threatening i could probably run away, or maybe jab my tripod at their neck to distract the person long enough to run away. doubt I will ever have to result to such matters.

the idea of rabies is not pleasant. nor is being mauled.

when i remember, i usually carry pepper spray.
its legal, and if something (like a raccoon) is running at you or your partner, (its happened before.) you have long distance defense..

but if you are left without anything for some reason, you always have your thumbs, and the attacker most likely has eyeballs..

I don't think they make them any more. I don't see the 7D ones any more either.

The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us?
