We have one of the highest legal guns-per-capita ratio in the world, and yet using guns for self-defence is highly illegal and will likely result in losing your guns, heavy fines and/or jail time. Self-defence also not an acceptable argument for obtaining a firearm permit. It's also illegal to carry a gun in public without a good reason or without a cover that hides it, or carry one around while it's loaded, or just play with it in some unacceptable way, or...

Personally, I prefer our way. The gun owners are generally the most responsible citizens because the first thing the police will do if you break the law is to take your guns, and no-one wants that as they tend to cost thousands of dollars apiece. It's much better than every damn redneck getting an arsenal...

I'm still pondering about applying for a licence now that I got my hunter's permit. A .22 pistol would be ideal, but it's next to impossible to get one now, so I might settle down for a twin-barreled 12-cal shotgun. It's just a pain in the ass to shoot an animal in a trap when you have to walk far away so that you won't disintegrate your expensive hunting equipment...

(I admit that it would be nice if I could get a firearm more easily - I really like shooting on the range with a good rifle - but I guess it's better in this way.)

If you go for the 12 gauge you can shoot birdshot, buckshot, AND slugs, its a pretty versatile firearm. I don't know if you have semi-automatic or barrel length restrictions where you live, but a short .22 carbine could serve you well, its lightweight you can use subsonic munition to keep the power factor and noise levels down. A subsonic .22LR out of, say, a Ruger 10/22 wouldn't damage your traps any more than a .22 pistol would.

Gun laws in Canada sort of work the same as you describe, except that our Firearms Act is so ridiculously convoluted that its worthless. Its not even that the laws are 'bad' or 'too strict' per se, its just that they make zero sense. Handgun with a 4.21'' barrel? Good to go. Handgun with a 4.19'' barrel? ILLEGAL. Belt fed MG34 (semiautomatic, non restricted)? Yep. Fifty cal Steyr (also non restricted)? Golden. Compact pistol? Jail time for you, bub.
We can get a rifle that functionally is very similar to an AK-47, and we can get Finnish version of an AK, but we can't get an AK. Not complaining, but that doesn't really make sense to me. Also, rifles will be prohibited based on how scary they look. Its just sort of silly, there's gun control and then there's just the twisted, sickening mess that is the Canadian Firearms Act.

Yeah, 12-gauge was what I meant. Its versatility is the reason why they recommended it to us in the first place as you can legally use it for the majority of our game - with suitable rounds you can hunt everything except moose and bear with a shotgun. It's also very likely that you won't get a permit for anything else as your first gun if you don't have a valid reason (being part of a moose-hunting group, for example).

As for the .22, the rules are the same as for all rifles: overall length 840 mm or more and barrel length not less than 400 mm. However, I don't think that the length would be an issue - the .30-06 Ruger M77 I had last year was quite compact - although the probability of injuring myself would likely be much greater with a rifle than with a pistol. As for semi-automatic, it's possible to get one if you can come up with a good reason why bolt-action is not enough, but if I wanted to use it for actual hunting (with high-powered rounds like .22 WMR), I would have to permanently limit the magazine capacity to two rounds. 77/22 could be nice...

Anyway, I'll probably end up with nothing due to the overall costs (permit, gun, firearm locker, a lot of practice at the range...). I'm also starting to wonder if I'll ever get around setting those traps I've been speaking of. I checked the ones we have behind our outhouse and they are all live-catching ones.

edit: Our gun laws are generally quite simple. There are not that many categories and the definitions make sense. For example, if a pistol fits to a box of certain size, it's considered a "pocket weapon" and requires a special permit that you can't get. As it's nearly impossible to come up with a good reason for owning anything but firearms that can be used for something purposeful, no-one has guns like a belt-fed MG34 machine gun even if they were restricted to semi-automatic mode.

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

The only thing I take that can be considered a weapon is hot cappuccino. I am terrified of wild dogs and have often wondered what I would do if I came across any.

Do you think maybe a pocket knife would be a good idea?

a knife is a terrible idea. Carry a can of wasp spray - that stuff shoots like 20+ feet and anyone, dog or person who gets that in the eyes will be in serious pain. I wont suggest using it with a lighter, as that would just be cruel.

I'd rather have a big stick for wild dogs... anyways if you live in an area with a bunch of wild dogs, you are afraid of them, and you want a knife, why would you need a knife that could fit in a pocket?

Anyways I just watched "The Grey" so your best defense is probably taping miniature alcohol bottles to your fingers.

Yeah let the dog bite you as this wouldn't be cruel.
