I was thinking a Nerds Rope could do some serious damage. Or you could just feed them black licorice. That shit is lethal.

| | | Posted by Goosey I think the apparent obsession with "defense" (especially using deadly weapons )topic is ridiculous... you're unlikely to be attacked by anyone, never mind in the uninhabited locations in which exploring takes place.
|
This! So much discussion on an unlikely occurence. However, if you have to enter through an area where you have concerns, don't be stupid! There are places where you are more likely to be safe when you go in a small group. The other explorers don't have to be trained combatants either.
Posted by Goosey Second, it's a bit concerning reading all the "knife fighting" posts. Knife fighting doesn't exist, the blades are too short and if your "opponent" has a knife either one of you will run away or you'll both get cut.
|
Yeah, this is also quite true. To be blunt, these guys who tell us what they know about knife fighting have never actually been in a knife fight; they have only had some training in the subject.
Posted by Goosey ... Knives for protection is a stupid idea. A big stick would work better and get you in less trouble.
|
Yep. A big knife is illegal to carry and would lose to a big stick or to any firearm.

Define big. I remember taking a shelter class, and big was defined this way. In NY any kind of knife is illegal, in Louisiana a bowie knife is acceptable.

Big in my mind is at minimum a 6-inch blade going up to a foot... most people have no need to carry a knife like that in an urban setting, which is usually where "urban" exploration takes place. A knife of any kind is a poor option for self-defense, it lacks range and most lack the power to actually stop a determined assailant. I stabbed myself quite hard by accident a while back, had to go to emergency but here's the thing: it didn't hurt, not then, not a day after and not now. Many times people just think they are getting punched when they are actually being stabbed. Knives work for killing unsuspecting people, apart from that, they are relatively poor weapons.

Such, Here in Texas, an "illegal knife" includes one with a blade over 5 1/2 inches long, any throwing knife and any kind of dagger. Sec. 46.02. UNLAWFUL CARRYING WEAPONS. (a) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his or her person a handgun, illegal knife, or club if the person is not: (1) on the person's own premises or premises under the person's control; or(2) inside of or directly en route to a motor vehicle or watercraft that is owned by the person or under the person's control... (b) Except as provided by Subsection (c), an offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor.(c) An offense under this section is a felony of the third degree if the offense is committed on any premises licensed or issued a permit by this state for the sale of alcoholic beverages.
http://www.statute...s/PE/htm/PE.46.htm Note: the term "illegal knife" is a bit misleading, it really means a knife that is illegal to carry.

You also said "define 'big'". I didn't mean to be argumentative. I meant to give you a legit answer with the specific legal definition in your state. Everyone who considers carrying a knife should know his local laws.

| | | I have my own weird rituals for defense. By which I mean I use absolutely none. I'll knock on the door before going in, of course, and then announce my presence and whatnot. But I always try to make it known that I'm really weak right off the bat. I dunno... I just hope that if there's a psychopath in there, he won't use excessive force if he knows that I cannot put up a fight no matter what. And, either way, I'd rather just deal with it and get robbed and/or raped than try to fight and end up dead. Probably not the best approach, but it works when I know I can't win.

I'm female and usually explore alone, so I know how intimidating some situations can be... that said, are you sure you can count on psychopaths to *just* rob/rape? If in danger, I would rather run, hide or fight (haha, me in a fight... that would probably not end well, but better that than handing myself over for who knows what!)

Maybe you're being too polite? Anyone in there is probably trespassing too. Why not just stay quiet and alert and if there's a weird situation, try to creep away without being noticed?

You do have a point... I mean, I can and will run like crazy. (only one time I had to so far, and it was a false alarm. Still, I'm surprised at myself for being so... almost badass. From the front of a house, through the glass door at the back (and I do mean through- Instead of stopping to unlock it, I held my bag against my shoulder and just threw myself at the door. Only one small cut.) and through a patch of thorns and barbed wire. Even after all that, I was able to run the remaining ~500 feet back to my bike before it settled in that I was bleeding.) I guess I just mean that, in the event somebody actually catches me, I'll give him anything and everything if it means getting home in one piece.

Well, yes, but I just mean I do it as a precaution no matter what, even if it's silent. Just a light knock and then I say I'm just looking around, I'm unarmed (that's a lie- While I'm willing to give up, I will put up a fight if it's clear I won't be left alive otherwise), and that I'll leave immediately if anyone is there. Yes, anyone in there is trespassing too, but I'd hate to walk into a meth lab or something if I'm not welcome.

Probably not a good idea, since if you don't put up any resistance (a) you are their dream victim and (b) they will be able to tie you up, bring you to a secondary location, do whatever they want, and by the time you figure out you may not make it out alive it could be too late.
