Haha, never thought of it like that. Yes I do. I don't know why, but I always have. It's actually come in handy a few times. I've gotten attacked by some dogs [none-US related], used it to pry open a stuck door [UE] among other things. It's the original swiss army knife!

Live Free or Die, thats why u do it!!! I used to live in NH and I always had a walking stick when I went hiking... not so much exploring, but they are great for hikes. Keepin it real in the 603 bitches!

I've never had to resort to violence, but the metal spikes on the bottom of my video tripod would ruin somebodys day if it came down to it... not to mention that is weighs about 9-10 lbs.

You carry a video tripod around exploring? I thought my Bogen was heavy, I can't imagine that

I've actually downsized alot. I'm shooting video w/ a DSLR now. You shoulda seen the amount of stuff I used to carry around, fucking retarded. Video tripod, Portable lighting w/ a heavy ass battery pack, a Canon XL2 (Big video camera, with a Big ass lens) All in a big hiking pack. Plus I used to be fat too so I sounded like fatty magee comin up those stairs or hiking up hills! All heavy breathin about to go into cardiac arrest! lol Ask Aerofennec or Felonius Monk, they'll tell ya ;)

The only thing I sometimes carry that could be defensive would be my 3D mag or my Leatherman multitool...But i never carry anything with the intent to use it for violence.

I rarely bring a long a flashlight. Partially because I ALWAYS forget. I don't see how they could be that useful. Those baton-maglights have a tendency to jam in the out position upon impact. congratulations. You now have a mini-walking stick! A six-foot staff weighs about 3 lbs and it has the same effect as binoculars hanging around your neck. It looks cool.

Besides, I think that maglight baton might be considered a conceal weapon in some states..

I agree. I usually try to explore with at least two other people. I just can't justify exploring someplace potentially dangerous/illegal without a couple of my buds to back me up.

I agree - bring people with you.

Only bring things for defense that you actually know how to use and are immediately accessible. That's pretty much it. Otherwise it's a false sense of security. I'm not saying I'm against weapons, but you're better off running than staying and using something you don't know how to use.

I've seen some nice compact video tripods that are perfect for DSLR use. Buddy of mine has a Velbon that pans sooo goddamn silky-smooth. Or you can always just buy a nice fluid head for your photo tripod

Anyway sorry for sidetracking

I bring two guns, one in my back pocket (American Arms .32), another in my gear bag (Heckler & Koch .40c) which is concealed carry compatible and ready for quick access. Of course, I do have the authority to carry wherever I want, so I reckon not too many of y'all can do that.

Smart thing for civilians, go in groups, research your state and local laws to determine what is defined as a weapon, and carry what you can. OR go to the police academy and get on somewhere.

Dunno about TX, but in Ohio, trespassing with a weapon, even if you have a CC permit, kicks it up to a felony.

Does here in Texas to, but I don't criminally trespass (as I usually have permission or the authority) and I am a full time Police Officer.

The only defense I usually bring is pepper spray. Non-lethal, and if needed, I can get away without harming anyone, anything.

...and you can say goodbye to your permit.

I also have a CC permit, and always carry wherever I go when I am not exploring, but since I am doing something that is illegal, I don't think it would be in my best interest to be carrying a weapon while doing so.

There are these lights, made by Sig Sauer, called a Defense Light, or something like that. They are a flashlight and strobe all in one. I have handled them and wondered how the strobe would be very effective in a defense situation. That was until I had one flashed at me about thirty feet away, in a pretty well lit room. I couldn't see when that thing was flashing. It was amazing how bright it was.

The ones made by Sig Sauer are way too expensive. There have to be ones out there for cheap.

Just a suggestion.
