Just from an aesthetic point of view, the banner ad is hard on the eyes and does not fit in with the general scheme of the website. I know that is the point. I understand that the ad is supposed to draw your eye and not allow you to focus on anything else. Somehow, even knowing that doesn't make it any less frustrating or distracting.
I should state that I understand Av would like to make back some money, but at the same time we should remember that Av made a great deal of money, during a very short period, towards this server. In fact, Av made considerably more than what he was asking for and could easily attain that again.
Call me crazy, but I prefer a world without banner ads. Personally, I would prefer another donation drive to banner ads. I certainly do not feel the need to donate to a site that is forcing large garish banner ads on me, just like I wouldn't donate to any website that profits from advertising. Furthermore, in this case, I feel blackmailed, afterall, "when you buy a light, the banner goes away."

Well, let me present it to you this way:
Due to various factors I've presented in other threads, I am currently about $800 CDN in debt due directly to the server.
I was, of course, going to contribute the most myself, more than any individual has so far, but I'm not a rich man, and $800 is a lot of money that I just don't have.
So, I can either try to make it back by giving UER members something they can prize -- the flashlights -- or I can put back up the donation drive and ask people to donate once again.
1&1 has also screwed me again for another $300 US -- something I haven't even added into the calculations yet. I'm trying to get that back, but we'll see where that goes.
But the last thing I am going to stand for is ungrateful snobs who have never once supported this website financially in any way complaining about banners and/or requests for donations. Who do you think you are?

Av isn't a rich man under any circumstances. He was cutting into his own funds, the money he uses to live and pay his bills with, to improve this website - for YOU GUYS. At least this way, (keychain light sale,) you get something physical in return for a donation. He needs to sell these lights in order to keep himself financially afloat and to help balance out the money he's put into the entire process of changing servers.
He's given us so much, and expected nothing for himself in return. He's given us an international community and a resource that we use - free. We are not charged for usage. Some of us choose to donate, which is fine. Most of us seem to forget that he is the owner of UER, and he can just shut this all down with little effort. It's his place, we play by his rules. That banner? Yeah, it's called an advertisement. It's used to increase sales. Deal with it.

I honestly don't care about the banner ads. There are simply more important things in life. Yeah it's kinda annoying, but on the other hand, if it weren't for the banner ad I wouldn't have been able to get a UER key chain that really appeals to the UE geek in me.

These forums didn't need a brand new server in a plush colo facility to stay afloat. People shouldn't kid themselves -- the server purchase and all the money you've sent in is about feeding Av's main hobby, which is playing around with expensive, frivolous electronics. He may have asked your permission and you may have given it to him, but buying the server wasn't about you, and neither is offering these keychain lights.
You're basically funding someone's Ferrari, or Panic's next trip around the world. Now, we may have all been getting a nice social benefit out of his play all along, but the recent spending was frivolous and unnecessary, and as the mounting costs are demonstrating, not wholely thought out. It's okay, I've made frivolous tech purchases that have cost me more than intended in the long run, but I've never tried to obligate hundreds of other people to help me pay for it.

Yes, it is. I have never offered any item for sale before to UER members, branded or otherwise. The closest that would come to this are the "Of Interest" section banners on the lower left, which advertise UE-related features (such as Ninj or Sigma's book) and for which I do not receive, nor ask for, any compensation.

How about you come talk to me when your site has the same amount of daily hits and processing power requirements as UER does?
Our old server was a P4 3.4 HT with 2gb of ram -- and we were maxing it out. CPU usage was at 70% average, peaking to 90% during heavy load.
The site is coded as efficiently as I can make it (we do use MySQL by the way) but when you have 5 million server requests in only 8 days, it really starts to add up.
You know nothing of my hobbies. I already got to "play with" the same server when we needed one for work. Do you think I like going into credit card debt? You think this is all fun and games for me?
It's stuck-up, selfish people like you, Kowalski, that make me want to just shut down this whole site and be done with it. My wallet would thank me. My free time would soar. My friends would no longer have to deal with me all pissed off after reading the ridiculous rantings of people like you.
But I'm in it for the long haul, and frankly I don't care how long you've been a member. Your opinion has been duly noted and your lies dissected. You want a free ride? Fine, but you can't complain about the car.
