| | | For those of you that haven't ordered any yet... DO IT. It's only a couple of bucks, and they are seriously worth every cent. I got two of them, one for my keyring, and one for my wife's. Her reaction? "Shit, those are BRIGHT!" I thought they were kind of a novelty, until about 45 minutes ago. I needed to replace the lock cylinder in my Jeep. It's a relatively simple task, but involves getting a long tool into the steering column from underneath to release the catch. I couldn't see the catch.... until I turned on Av's light. Instant bright illumination, at high noon. That 10 seconds I used it right there probably saved me 5-10 minutes of dicking around... so, in my opinion, it's already paid for itself. SO BUY ONE ALREADY.

| | | I like the ones I got. Very bright and my cat chase the light all over the house. Great fun. Also Tony Little approves of these lights.

| | | Is there a reason that we now have to look at an obnoxious banner for these things on every page viewed? Are the thread plus the little button on the sidebar not enough to inform people about the opportunity to purchase these lights? Are so many users still in the dark that we need to resort to shoving them down everyone's throats until enough have been purchased? What other UER brand merchandise are we going to have to buy / tolerate in future?

| | | Until I make back the approx. $1000 that I am in the negative for this whole server move, you guys are going to have to tolerate some banners or advertisements. Of course, when you buy a light, the banner goes away. Kowalski: You've never donated or purchased anything. I think you are in the least position to complain. Oh good, AvonER.

Ah yes, the annoy people until they give you money tactic.

Well, when use of this site goes donation-only, I'll shut up and leave. Until then, I'll comment as I like about developments here. The value of users' opinions shouldn't be denominated by their interest in supporting your forums financially.

Well, let me present it to you this way: Due to various factors I've presented in other threads, I am currently about $800 CDN in debt due directly to the server. I was, of course, going to contribute the most myself, more than any individual has so far, but I'm not a rich man, and $800 is a lot of money that I just don't have. So, I can either try to make it back by giving UER members something they can prize -- the flashlights -- or I can put back up the donation drive and ask people to donate once again. 1&1 has also screwed me again for another $300 US -- something I haven't even added into the calculations yet. I'm trying to get that back, but we'll see where that goes. But the last thing I am going to stand for is ungrateful snobs who have never once supported this website financially in any way complaining about banners and/or requests for donations. Who do you think you are? -av

Wraiths Brand™ Toilet paper, for a softer, gentler and ultimately more insane and socially irrational wipe. Seriously...I'm holding out until Av offers UER brand hash.

Well, I'm one of your very early members, with a posterid below 200. Of still active users, I'm probably in the bottom few dozen. I've been active continuously here for more than four years. And while I don't contribute to this place in the ways that you find most socially acceptable or politically expedient, I do so in a fashion that is necessary, beneficial, and respected by no shortage of users here. And I consider it a better way for me to contribute to this place than through a five or fifty dollar paypal transaction. No, I have not and will not contribute financially to the upkeep and infrastructure of these forums. But I will continue to speak out when things are done that are deleterious to the user experience here. It's incredibly petty that you would stoop to evaluating people's opinions based on whether or not they've sent you cash. But you know, if you don't value your non-paying members, then institute a $5 annual fee. That'll solve that problem (not to mention reduce the strain on the server!). But, pretending that you are actually listening: If it would really hurt your sales targets to give users a choice between buying "Amazing UER keychain lights" and saying "No thank you" and having the banner disappear, I suggest you should reevaluate your approach to selling them and your approach to the financial management of this site.
