Someone up there (I'm too lazy to check) mentioned that Myth Busters did a show on getting your toes chopped off by the steel toe in boots and how it is impossible or highly unlikely.
Yeah, whatever.
I worked in trucking for several years at various companies (not as a driver, thank you) and no one was ever allowed to wear steel toes because people kept chopping off their toes by dropping freight (well, by being idiots and dropping freight) or getting their toes run over by some crazy (which is fairly standard) forklift driver.
Anyhow, steel toes are stupid heavy. It's like walking around with ankle weights all way, not to mention you can't climb fences for shit because the toe is too big to stick in the chainlink.
So I wear 14 hole Docs, no steel toe. I owned them long before I started exploring, and I'm glad of it. I keep ending up in abandonments with a lot of overgrown weeds and bugs, so I tuck my pants into the tops of them to protect myself from bugs and burrs (which has been quite effective, judging by the state of the legs of other people I go with). The ankle support is killer.

| | | | I've had my high-top chucks for about 6 years now and use them for the majority of my exploring. Other than those, I go with my combat boots. Thankyou Sears. I agree that keeping the pants tucked in the boot is very useful. They aren't steel toe, but are pretty sturdy anyway.

| | | | steel toed combats. they're pretty chewed up and I got them for $15 a year ago. I'm due for a new pair, either something the same or a pair of used doc's. I won't pay for new doc's, I can't justify the high price tag given how I treat my footwear (very badly).

| | | | so far, i haven't had a problem with regular old skate shoes. if i know I'm going to be in water, then maybe my doc martens, usually there isn't much flooding around here (2 inches at most) so my skate shoes usually work perfectly, they also help for hiding in plain sight because i wear a designer (or whatever) hoodie and black jeans, so i look like some skater kid.

Once you get used to it, it can be done really fast. Unless you're like me, who had a cat who killed the ends of them and keeps the tips together by scotch tape. Yup, I'm lazy. The bitch of 14 holes in breaking them in. They wreck your achilles tendon like nothing else... well, nothing else but a pair of gardening shears.
