That may be a desirable quality in a boot though. Riding boots have that so you don't slip your foot through the stirrup and break your leg in a fall. (think the scene where he breaks his leg in Seabiscut) By the same principle, that boot could save you a broken leg climbing a slippery ladder. Having a boot that you can hook your heel with is great for all sorts of situations where you're perched precariously.

Of course, I still prefer my approach shoes (pg 1 of this thread)

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

broken in chucks are the way to go...any any kind like chucks. I have some chucks wannabees and there are pretty sweet.

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? Sorry I couldn't resist.

Now back to our regularly scheduled thread.

I really like DM's. However, I'm not too impressed as the ones I just bought 8 months ago (see below) area already squeeking. They are steel toes I use for work. I also use my Van's when I want to be more comfortable. The DM's are about 25% as comfortable as my old DM's (that weren't steel toes)

They're Harley Davidson Faded Glory boots, which amuses me because I'd be surprised if I found a pair more faded than mine.

Usually surplus army boots, or else steel toe engineer boots if I'm feeling particularly paranoid about my feet.

why all the steel toes? Are you guys dropping things on your feet constantly as you UE, or are you kicking the homeless people?

Interesting thing: I talked to a farrier (a profession in which you constantly have to worry about livestock stomping on your feet) and asked him why he didn't use steel toes. He said if he did, chances are it'd just hurt more, because if weight came down on the back edge of the steel part, it'd just bend it down and "F" his foot up. Granted, he was referring to a half ton animal concentrating all it's weight on four hooves that amount to about a square foot of ground/boot, but still... I'm not sure why so many people opt to go with clunky steel toes. I think of them more as a tool for kicking things around than a safety measure.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

For the same reason people wear those SWAT gloves: because they make you look like a hardcore urbex bad-ass.

I wear the boots cause I dont want shit getting stuck up through my foot, they are steel toe cause punk shows can be brutal on your feet, and since i wear really tight pants people tend to call me a fag and its not so funny when your kicking someones face in with a steel toe boot.

I pretty much wear whatever is on my feet at the time.. but i am pretty clutsy, so if i am going into somewhere with the possibility of a nail coming through my foot, I have started taking my work boots with me.. otherwise i wear these old crappy vans.. i paint in them and do everything in them so they are a mess..

You answered your own question. If you do not think safe, you aren't safe.. no.. I'm not a safety expert, and I'm not trying to be critical of yor opinion.. everyone has to make their own choices, but have you ever stepped on a 3" rusty nail sticking up from a board?

In reference to it bending the inner edge of the steel, that won't happen.

Ultimately, It's the same as not wearing a seatbelt. Wearing one will save you in (I'm making up approximate numbers here) 90 out of 100 accidents, not wearing it will save you in one out of 100 accidents. Which makes sense? IF you say not seatbelts, then you need to work on your math skills.

Here's a link to a mythbusters episode about steel toe boots.

Used French surplus military boots. Cost about ten bucks from a catalog.

(Insert joke about French military here.)

so the steel toe does work but i dont think its fair to say they busted the myth on the japanese guy shooting off in the air with the water bottle rockets. to me it sounds like they couldnt duplicate the same system that they had on that show.

looks pretty real to me, they should say they failed to duplicate the myth

I've seriously (I mean no joke) worn boots identical to these. Sometimes I pack them and only wear them for the photos in tricky locations, but they're not that tough to maneuver in, and their vinyl surface keeps water out.
Unfortunately I don't have a photo of my own. They're all torn up from use, but they go with my pin-up style outfits....I enjoy taking 40's and 50's style pin-up photographs in intense urban locations as kinda of an offset clash between the softness of the subject matter and the cold harshness of the background. I know some of you may think it's strange, but that's my own personal extension of the hobby. No harm done to the property, and only tasteful shots taken. How could I go wrong?
Always keeping it interesting.
