I've worn logging style boots as my daily footwear for the past eight years so I prefer them when doing UE. I'm so used to them I hate to wear traditional shoes because I always feel like my ankle's going to twist over on itself or "truthfully" I feel naked without a pair of boots on...

On a sidenote my current pair of Wolverine boots are going to shit out soon and I was considering replacing them with these.

http://www.boot.com/bgherald.htm

Anyone have opinions on them?

I will actually give some validity to teva's tabi boot. on one condition. they are great when i am kayaking or at the river. stupid shoes for anything else. i deplore sandals with all the black hatred in my heart so when i found these when i worked for a local outfitter, i bought them on clearance for twenty bucks and have really loved them. it's as close as i can get to going barefoot while i'm kayaking and they protect your toes better than regular teva or watersport sandals which can be outrageously expensive. the only time i've ever used them to ue is when i kayaked into the outfall of the bayou gayoso which runs under downtown memphis.

as for my normal exploring shoes, nunn bush fieldings are the f'n bomb. all leather cap toe oxfords with a non-slip sole and double as dress shoes. my last pair survived for more than two years before i retired them and bought another pair. about sixty to seventy bucks online and very comfortable.

Vasque Wasatch GTX...in snow or bad weather, I add a pair of short Gortex gaiters.

Please don't be stupid. It might piss me off so much that I have a seizure or something. I hate stupid people.

I personally wear Dakota 8" metal free work boots... the black police model.
Although not as stylish as my 20hole DM's or my CF Garrisons, they have many pros;
-toe and plate protection: composite plastic (all the protection none of the weight/cold problems)
-wicked fuck'n tread
-nice height, good ankle support
-static free, shock proof (case of bad air enviros this is a nice feature)
-Gortex (waterproof and breathable)
-soft footing (feels like runners)

Cons
-weird little scotch-brite dots on the back of the heel (style issue really)

Cheers,

You can kinda see 'em here.

Doc Martens. They were once brown. Layers and layers of paint from years ago have made them red, and, for a while, slightly waterproof. I've recently duct taped the inside so they actually are waterproof now, as well as a bit more snugly fitting. However, as I noticed in the last drain (the one in the picture), the paint has a tendency to bleed. When I was pulling off my slightly frozen boots after the walk from the drain back to the car, I noticed my calves and feet were a red. I was quite worried "What the hell was in that water?" But it was gone the next day. And while duct taping my boots up, I realized what it was all about.

And my sins are so unoriginal.

For warmer weather= Uninsulated Timberland-Pros (steel toe, water-proof, oil resistant, great traction anywhere.

Cold weather = same as above but a insulated pair.

I go camping, hiking, and fishing so I have ample outdoor wear.

Oddly enough I wear 'Shoes for Crews'... If anyone has worked in a fast food joint you probably know what I'm talking about. Basically they are slip resistant shoes/sneakers made for the restuarant industry but the soles are great, you can walk on water/grease without slipping around. Great for leaky buildings or tunnels of different sorts. =)

skate shoes, and/or nearly anything vans

they're as comfortable as it gets, have GREAT grip, and are usually available in subtle colours and styling

they wear out quickly though, if you do a lot of climbing or trekking, but for strictly urban environments, nothing beats skate shoes.

edit: never underestimate the value of good grip. regardless of the location, you can never have enough grip!

much ado about nothing; look for the Nike air UEX sneaker any day now...

I hike and hunt often, instances where proper footwear is essential. I think the decision of proper footwear for UE is kinda common sense, as you're just out for a short trip usually, but if you don't know what you're facing...

In my humble opinion, these are the factors to consider.

Stick with light flexible army or hiking style boots for a number of reasons: ankle support; steel toe might be a good idea; Waterproof is a major plus; slip-resistant soles(I have an awesome pair of Solomon hiking boots that took me 843 kilometers across northern Spain on foot without a single blister, but they were terrible on wet pavement, and even worse on wet tile or linoleum); Steel shank and/or a good strong sole is important in case you step on a nail or something else sharp.

If it's cold, insulated boots are the ticket; good wool or blended socks are key(proper long underwear does wonder for the rest of the body too without adding excess bulk). I'm not a big fan of the mickey mouse boots while exploring, as they're too clunky and don't give you much feel for what you're stepping on.

If you're anticipating water levels above ankle height, wellies(wellingtons), duck boots or even waders(if the water level is that high) are the way to go.

I wear dark colored hard sole mountain boots. They aren't especially great for sneaking, but I can manage to be fairly silent in them, even still. They also protect your feet from potential nastiness hazards such as used needles, syringes, sharp bits of metal, and the like. They're also pretty warm, allow for fairly easy climbing, and are fairly easy to clean.
