I've been rocking the canon 5d for the last few years.

For a petite female like me, the body and lens feel like a huge BEAST. It's big, heavy and totally conspicuous. It's really hard to be quick, quiet and nimble if you're taking photos with this thing in tow just due to the size and weight. I try to be careful not to break it, so that slows me down a bit because I don't just throw it in a bag and I try not to run or play too rough with it.

But it's fucking solid and works awesome, so I put up with the heft of it.

I would love something smaller and more compact but the full frame sensor is where it's at (for me, at least!)

Is there a question somewhere in there? Maybe you need to buy a smaller plastic Rebel for those non-photographical-intent outings or a small G11 to pocket?

As opposed to a big G11?

Im a few weeks away from ordering one with a handy 14-24m f/2.8 but was just curious to see if anyones used one specifically for urbex purposes.

Cheers

You're ordering the absolute best that Nikon has to offer. How do YOU think that it'll handle UE?

Not me, but I know a couple guys who use them for UE. A spectacular camera, with results to match. I'm very jealous.

Someone showed me this website with used camera bodies.
I'm trying to buy my first DSLR, I found a couple that are in my price range can anybody give me any advice on which one would be a good decision or not?

One of these bodies

http://www.keh.com...C029990450080?r=FE

http://www.keh.com...C029990585330?r=FE

And this lens.

Thanks!

So.. what is your price range, exactly?

To add: Every single body you have described is a baaaad idea. The lens is an even shittier idea, as not only does it fucking SUCK, it will not even work with the 10D, D60 or D30 as these bodies will only accept full-frame EF lenses, NOT EF-S. These ancient bodies were based on film bodies with full-size mirrors which will strike the protruding rear of an EF-S lens.

I see what you mean, my price range is about 300 dollars so I'm trying to find something decent in that price range.

If you insist on sticking to the Canon route, you don't want to go any older than the Canon Rebel XT/350D or the 20D.

However.. seeing as you're looking for your first dSLR and I have a bias towards Nikon, I would suggest the D40, as it's relatively recent and it's the cheapest thing Nikon has offered. It was always sold as a kit with the Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens and said combination can often be found for about $300 used.

It's kinda like buying a car (buying a camera). You could buy a brand new car (60D, XS, etc), or a 1990's or 1980's model still in decent shape that will get you around just fine (30D, XTi). But for good to ok quality there's a line where you don't want to go too far back and cross, let's say buying a 1960's car for a daily driver (D30, D60 which came out waaaaay back in 2000 and 2002 resp).

Another choice to consider is one of the (more modern) higher-end point and shoots with DSLR features (say, a Canon SX10 or 20, G-series, or even an older S5 or S3). They're decent alternatives, but more importantly you may be able to find a used one within your budget and still get good results.

That is, unless you really need the interchangeable lens capability or cleaner high ISOs a DSLR can offer (among other things). In that case, an XTi or better would be a wiser choice. Even though it's a kit lens, the 18-55 **with IS** is better optically than the one *without* IS that you were looking at.

I see a flaw in your plan... He's going to ROB YOU and leave you in the desert. What's the point of having even the greatest photographic opportunities in the world before you if you can't photograph them?

I think that's fairly good advise I had an SX-10is before my XSI and it was a good little camera. Couldn't keep up with a low end DSLR at very high ISO's or for really long exposure (well it only did 15 sec. w/out CHDK) but the reach of the lens and macro capability where awesome. In good light or with a tripod for UE it produced very usable images. If your on a budget it is pretty hard to beat as you could probably pick one up for $250+/-

I would rather shoot with an SX10 than a D30/D60 for sure. Just some food for thought. If you get a high end point and shoot it'll probably get you hooked enough that you'll take the P&S to its limits and then start saving for a better DSLR.

I want to purchase my first(real) camera. I currently have a Canon powershot (I think its an IS100SX if I'm not mistaken). Now this camera is very nice for shooting family party pictures, and the 10x zoom isn't bad...

However, I don't even bring it with me as I explore, its unable to take good pics in a dark environment. it only has a maximum of 15 seconds exposition time... as soon as you put more than a few hundreds ISO the picture becomes too noisy, etc.

Now, I am NOT looking for a professional camera. As much as I'd love to have a 3500$ pro camera, I just don't have that budget.

I was looking for a Canon Rebel XS, and figured it might just be enough for me. However, I noticed it can't shoot videos. Now shooting videos is not my main goal, but having the ability to would be nice. I then settled on the Canon Rebel T1i... It can shoot 720p vids at 30fps, or 1080p vids at 20 fps (might be cool for very slow moving videos, but anything moving fast at 20 fps will appear laggy). Its picture taking ability seems to be a bit better than the XS too. The price is really my limit though. I will not go higher than this, and I already feel it would be too much, although I would accept piercing a big hole in my wallet for that camera.

So I'd like your opinions on that camera. I'm kinda sold to Canon, but if you suggest me something else and really back your suggestion with something (like big deference in price, or big deference in quality or ability for the same price), I might consider going for another brand.

I know its probably not a simple question, but just do your best to answer, and don't be too technical, as I have some basics, but I'm not a pro! I know what ISO is, I understand the basic of aperture, and exposition, I am able to shoot in manual mode (in fact I hate auto modes), but still, try not to be too technical.

Thanks a lot!

I personally am a Nikon person, I use a Nikon d200, I think a nikon d70 would be a good beginning camera for you guys, just remember to get a prime lens such as the 50mm 1.8 for low light conditions.

It's a great camera but heavy as hell. The 14-24 is a great combo but you may be pretty paranoid because of the exposed element depending on the kinds of places you are shooting (not to mention the cost of the camera as well). Keep in mind it will also limit your options for lens choices, so if you want something with a zoom you are most likely looking at a 14-24, 24-70 and possibly at 70-200 (although that's not all that useful for UE)

But yes it delivers as expected.

No.. a D3X will limit your options for lens choices, as the higher resolution/pixel density wants the best glass.

There is a plethora of decent choices on the used market. And with the D3s and it's very low pixel density, even so-so lenses will produce decent-enough quality.
