I think I've pretty much got my camera selection narrowed down to a Canon XSi, T1i, or (distant maybe) T2i. I've held several Canons and Nikons in stores, and the Canons just felt better in my hands.

Any hints or suggestions to help narrow my search? Keep in mind I'll be new to the DSLR world, with the most advanced camera I've ever operated a shitty P&S. Something that is kinda n00b friendly would be a nice transition. I'd also like to stay around $500, but could go a little over if needed.

EDIT: As for what I'll be shooting, abandoned buildings and drains for the most part. For non-UE, I'd love to do some shooting out in nature. Clouds, trees, animals, lightning, all that stuff sounds fun to take pictures of.

The XSi, is your best bet.. It's what I'm using, and started with, and self taught with it... Can't go wrong... Send me a PM, and I'll give you more detail about the rebel family from Canon, and some pricing info that can save you money!!!

Because my other thread got locked, dammit...

I'm thinking about buying a Powershot A490. Anyone have experience with these? How durable/portable are they?

Thanks! PM incomming shortly.

And I don't really *need* video. It'd be a nice thing to have, but in reality, not needed at all. And after doing some reading during work today... I think the XSi fits what I need 99%.

haha, thanks swizz. but, i have another dilema that could make for some interesting conversation... Canon EOS 7D, or Canon 70-200/ 2.8 L lens...? I do a lot of sports photography, and they are both the same price.. and I want a new body REALLY bad, but which would be a better investment? opinions?

If you go with a new body, do you have another lens that will do for sports until you can upgrade? The AF system on the 7D is great for sports and may work fine if you have "good enough" lens for now. You could also look at cheaper lenses. The 70-200 f4 L is a good option if you have enough light. There is also the 200 f2.8 L if you are usually shooting at the long end of the range. You could also look at one of the Sigma 70-200 f2.8s as a way of saving some cash.

Hard to say. You're shooting with an XSi currently? I have the EF 70-200 f/4L (non IS) and I've also owned the EF 200 f/2.8L. I wouldn't recommend the latter on a crop sensor. Although it's super fast, with the 1.6x multiplier (320mm equiv) it's way too limited - you'll most certainly end up with missed shots.

How's the auto focus on your current body, and what's the burst rate? If they work well enough I would definitely get the glass and wait to get a new body.

The f/4L is pretty damn awesome. You will probably want to buy the IS version if you shoot lots of sports, and get a monopod.

Over and out.

the auto focus is rough, not fast enough for some of the shots, and only 9 AF point the burst rate, is also 3.5, whereas the 7D has a burst rate of 8fps, and 19 AF points. and i would be upgrading from 12.2mp ro 18mp. also my XSi only goes up to ISO 1600 and is extremely noisy that high, the 7D goes up to 6400 and expandable to 12800, and from what ive seen, the 7D at 12800 is less noisy then the XSi at 1600.
as for glass, i think i could do without IS, i just need the extra aperture.. i have no issues with hand shake and such, and blurring is caused by movement... also, i have a tripod AND monopod...

im just stuck at the question, new body, or new glass...
they will both work wonders for me...

I don't know about 12,800 on the 7D being better than 1600 on the XSI I would say 6400 is more comparable. I think swizzler brings up a good point about the 70-200 F4L. Its one of the cheapest L's out there if you could swing the 7D and it together it would save you some money. I don't think you could make up the difference that the 2.8L can offer to stop action in lower light though. I would search all the craigslist or similar classifieds around you. I was lucky enough to get a 70-200 2.8L used for $950 right after I bought my 7D.

If you where closer I'd let you try them out to decide which would do more for you. I would also echo what was said about the 200 2.8 being to inflexible for most situations especially on a crop body. ISO 12,800 on the 7D is not real pretty I would not want to use it for anything that might need printed bigger than 4x6 even then I don't know that they'd look very good, but I have never tried it.

I will say there is a night and day difference in the AF and burst rate between the 2 with any lens attached when it comes to catching action. Definitely a tough choice for sure.

f/2.8 to f/4 is only one stop. You could underexpose by one stop and bring it back quite easily with the 7D RAW files.

A 7D with cheaper L glass (or even 5 star third party glass) will be far superior to an XSi with top-of-the line L-glass.

You are gaining one stop and a bit of sharpness in the f/2.8 but you will lose a remarkable degree of sharpness on with older rebel.

alright, thanks for the input guys! and as for using the 7D and the lenses, ive already used the 7D with every L lens available in stores, including the 70-200... i already know what its like, and what i want, but right now, i can only afford one, so thats more why im asking, is should i get the L glass, or the body

It's a great camera but heavy as hell. The 14-24 is a great combo but you may be pretty paranoid because of the exposed element depending on the kinds of places you are shooting (not to mention the cost of the camera as well). Keep in mind it will also limit your options for lens choices, so if you want something with a zoom you are most likely looking at a 14-24, 24-70 and possibly at 70-200 (although that's not all that useful for UE)

But yes it delivers as expected.

Sorry for the late reply to this.

Ive already got lens choice sorted.

14-24 for now as most of the time I need to go wide anyway. The exposed element, yeah ok has its risks but if you are careful with your shit, nothing's really going to happen to it. I'll still be weary the first time I take it out in a drain though lol.

50mm prime as an every day shooter will call this body home next
Then its a step up to a 24-70 then 70-200 but I agree for UE you'd hardly ever use it.

I've got a 200 at the moment and its rare that Ive used it. Even rarer that I've shot over 150mm with it.

Maybe somewhere down the line ill throw an 85mm prime on there too.

A pricey kit. A heavy kit. But at the end of the day it will be a versatile kit and i know i wouldn't be needing to upgrade again any time soon.
