You are probably right,
I was referring to the fact that it is full frame camera so you would need full frame lenses unless you don't mind cropping a bit. I should have been more clear.

This is one reason I like Nikon.. if you have DX/crop lenses, they can be used just fine on a full-frame body as the sensor automatically crops to accommodate the smaller image circle. The only downside to this is a resolution penalty.. but unlike Canon, crop lenses can actually be mounted and used.

Unless you want video a d3 should be enough.

hey im completely new to camera models, I used to use just whatever was lying around, but this time I want a good SLR camera. after doing some research, ive found what i think to be a good choice, but again, who am i to say whats good lol. i found the Nikon D5000, and i think its the one for me. i asked a friend what she thought and said it was a good choice, but i needed to add lenses and stuff to it to be better, and to take the quality pictures, as well as the artistic pictures im wanting to attempt to take. heres what ive been told to buy.

Nikon D5000
50-200mm lens
52mm lens filter
polarized filter
puffer

is this too much, or the perfect set up? are there things there that arent necessary? i did a bit of research, and what ive found is that its pretty pricey, but i guess you get what you paid for?

what do you think?

You'll need a wider lens, sooner rather than later, particularly for "exploration".

I often use a 12-24mm zoom but it might be more than you want to spend right away. If cost is an issue, you might want to look at the 18-55 or 18-85 kit lenses as opposed to (or in addition to) the 55-200.

Its a good set up, but for UE, you should also get a prime lens like the Nikon Nikkor 35 mm - F/1.8
As its the cheapest new prime lens you can get that will auto-focus with the d5000.

That's awesome thanks! I went out to my camera store here in Woodstock to pick up my camera but they went out of stock at the store but have one left at their warehouse. That being said the nikon 3100 is the same price and you get more mega pixels (1.9 more I think) so I think I'm going to go with that, but will the lens filters you're suggesting available for that one or can any filter go on any camera, as long as the thread fits? Do you know roughly how much it is?

thank you very much there's been a ton on places I've wanted to go, but I didn't have the proper camera to do ue any justice. I'm excited to get this camera and lenses lol how much did you pay for your 12-24mm lens? Money isn't a huge issue, but then again Christmas is right around the corner so I should save some for family gifts too XD I'm in need of the best bang for my buck, but I've always believed you get what you pay for

Nikon 12-24mm is ~$1,000

Tokina 12-24mm is only $400

If you are going to spend $1000 on a wide angle lens you might as well save up another $500 and buy the Nikon 14-24mm, which is the best wide angle lens available from any manufacturer.

Or invest in the sigma 8-16 which gives you the widest field of view for about $700

The widest best bang for your buck would be a sigma 10-20mm

As you can read here most of the wide angle lenses have different bells and whistles but the resultant image quality is the SAME.

Also, more megapixels don't exactly mean better,
For example a point and shoot with 14 megapixels doesn't have better quality than my Nikon d200 that has 10.2.
Prime lenses usually are sharper than zooms and they do much better in low light.

deffinately, have to go with Canon
my 450D is bullet proof
k, maybe not quite bullet proof, but has been through multiple storms, and one tornado, and been through many abandonements, and has out lasted many nikons around my home town... ;)
just saying...

that's related to sensor size not megapixels. Bigger sensor: better image quality.

too many megapixels on a small sensor results in increased noise or so I've heard.

Though, I still haven't seen concrete evidence of this in dslrs

but supposedly the t2i with it's 18mp
will be much noisier than an XT or XTi with their 8,10 respective.

Not only is there a potential for more noise, the high pixel density will expose every flaw in a lens and diffraction as you stop down will begin to take its toll quicker. in other words, you need sharp glass to get the best out of a high pixel density.

What do you shoot (other than UE of course) and what do you find lacking in your 450D? I have a 7D and if I only shot UE then I would have gone with a 60D instead. The 7D is an awesome camera, but it's also expensive overkill for a lot of things. Look at the features of the T2i/60D/7D and see what best matches your needs. Depending on what lenses you have spending more of your budget on them might be wiser.

oh, trust me... I've done my research... and I shoot portraits every once in a while.. I ALWAYS shoot candids when im out with friends, I shoot a lot of sports stuff... mainly hockey... so the 7D seems my best bet... good ISO range, good noise reduction, good fps rate, it has video (although im personally not crazy about video) it has better, faster shutter speeds, a better shutter life, it has the DUAL processors... it's just overall, a FAR better camera then my XSi... and I have had my XSi more then long enough.. I just feel the need to upgrade, and i need to extra performance the 7D offers for shooting hockey.
mayy sound a bit ridiculous to some.. but it certainly would NOT be overkill for me... I used the first one in Canada on Demo... been in love since.. I've just been trying to save up.. I already have 4 lenses as well...

I recently upgraded from an XSI to a 7D and couldn't be happier. The speed and focus accuracy on moving subjects is unreal and as good as it gets this side of the 1d series. One other thing that really surprised me is super low noise in long exposures at ISO 100. I think it looks better at 18mp than the same length exposure from the XSI at 12mp. Of course the higher ISO's do get noisy but 1600 compared to the XSI is worlds better and 3200 isn't terrible.

Unless you have the coin to go for the 1d series its as good as it get for fast action. The 5DmkII probably would probably be a little slow in the FPS and Focus areas compared to the 7d. Although the 5dmkII would be better if you where just strictly shooting UE and Portraits if you can handle the full frame price tag.

I bought the 7d because it was the best thing I could get for fast action, weddings/portraits and UE combined, sure it has some compromises and I would love it to be full frame but nothing is perfect.
I would recommend the 7d hands down over anything with an else with an APS-C sensor unless you have nikon lenses and could go the D300s route. From what I've seen it performs just as well.

I have used a D300 that belonged to a friend of the family, with a nikor 70-200 f/2.8 shooting hockey.. it was AMAZING... but I am a Canon faithful, and have Canon lenses... so I think i will be sticking to the 7D, thanks for the input!

I think I am going to replace most of my kit with primes as far as I've seen examples of a cheap prime vs say the 24-70L the cheap primes beat L-zooms hands down. I buy all my exploring/climbing/camera gear, piece by piece at a time.

samyang 14mm, canon 24mm (because it's so damn tiny), ___undecided___ 35mm, ___undecided___ 50mm, canon 85mm [ and Zenitar 16mm will be on the list if I go for a 5D ]

I still haven't decided t2i, 7D, 50D, 60D, 5DmkI ... which of these will produce the best night shots
(I know the t2i won't it's on the list for size/compatibility reasons)? $1500 is my absolute limit for a body <$1000 is preferable.

I feel I am really beginning to pushing the sensor of the XT even using RAW files, I can't extract as much as I would like too. I really like the small, compactness of the XT, but I've lugged an EOS-3 around and I really really really like the way it handles. I wish I could get a Digital EOS-3 for $200!

I don't plan on intentionally getting rid of the XT: it will probably become the sacrificial camera, outfitted with the samyang 8mm and a 50mm or 24mm prime; it will die when I dive into the next tidal marsh to evade homeland security. And I'll probably buy another one off ebay for the same purpose.

I want something I'm not going to have the urge to upgrade for a while and something that will give me the best image quality for late night wanderings when I don't have to make the decision: my gear or my record.
