Reasons why the Pentax K-5 may be the best SLR on the market today. Better dynamic range than even the Nikon D3, along with 1080p video, and it's one of the only SLRs out there to sport a 100% field of view viewfinder.

Yea, Canon s95 is plan B so far...Although it seems not as good as LX-5 in some aspects.

I just ordered the predecessor, the DMC-LX3, for $250 used from the same seller I bought my Rebel from. I'll report back when it arrives.

FUCK YEAH!!!

I got myself a very nice refurbished 500D.
For the first time in 2 years, I will be able to do photography whenever I want, wherever I want (not "deprived of photography" anymore!)
And for the first time in my life, I can call an SLR my own. (and only the 3rd time of ever using one)

Fuck me, this is going to be awesome.

What lenses do you guys recommend I get? (extremely limited budget in mind) So far i only have the 18-55 f/3.5 kit zoom. I was thinking of either getting the Canon 50/1.8 (for the large aperture, I'd rather get something wider otherwise), and one of those old manual focus lenses.

save your money and go wider.

samyang 8mm f/3.5 fisheye ~$300
samyang 14mm f/2.8 ~$400
sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 ~$500

I'm happy for you. I felt pretty much the same way when I got first DSLR. "Yeah no more film! I can actually afford to see what my photos look like!"

I'd definitely go with the 50mm F1.8.

Shoot with that and see where you want to go in terms of photography. Then decide on what's limiting your photographic ability/creativity and purchase appropriate lens/body/accessories.

But yeah, the 50 1.8 is a cheap and easy way to get into the world of fast primes. The 55-250 is good if you need a telephoto on a budget.

Definitely agree with this.

I too just upgraded my (now dead) SX10is with a 500D, and as well as the kit lenses also got a 50mm f1.8. For the price of it, you simply can't beat it. Good low-light performance, and takes a very crisp picture. I know a number of people who have a range of lenses, but always seem to have their 50mm prime on .

Next on the list is a Canon EFS 10-22. There's some good info here:

The Pen's crazy awesome too. It has a bigger sensor and will have better image quality. Plus the bonus of interchangeable lenses

Similar priced cameras and similar priced lenses are going to produce similar results.

The Canon has live view, the Nikon doesn't.
Every EF/EF-S Canon lens with autofocus will focus on the rebel. Only some Nikkor lenses will autofocus with a D300.

Canon switched over their lens system in the 80's. Only lenses made after 1987 work on a Canon DSLR. All Nikon lenses made after 1959 will work or can be made to work with a Nikon body.

Nikon has a slightly bigger sensor area which produces slightly better results, it also means that the same lens will be slightly wider.

Canon is a more amateur friendly brand. They have a greater variety of mid-range lenses at better prices than Nikon.

Nikon's pro lenses and pro gear is better than Canon's.

That's my opinion (and I'm rocking an archaic 350D)

The D3000 SUCKS, stay far away from it.

If you're going to go the Nikon route, go for the D3100 instead.

What I would do, is buy a used rebel for ~$300
and a used lens, the EF 17-85mm f/4-5.6 for ~$300

You are going to be much happier with the 17-85mm than the shitty 18-55 kit.

I'd get a reliable tripod as well Slik or Manfrotto would be my recommendations.

It's no secret I hate the $100 50mm prime on crop sensor but any other prime lens offering would make an excellent addition to your kit.

hmmmmm i dont know what to do. Would buying just the camera and then getting a better lense than what comes in the kit be a better idea? Im really problably going to be limited to about 600$ maybe a lil more maybe a lil less haha just depends on if my family is feeling generous

The D3100 is looking pretty good as well. Such hard decisions. Ugh

Fixed.

The only..and I mean, ONLY..way the 17-85mm IS is better than the 18-55mm IS kit lens is build quality. The 17-85mm is only slightly less of a dog than the original 18-55mm non-IS kit lens.

I'm biased towards Pentax but the numbers back it up. For $600 the Pentax K-r kicks the shit out of them both. Shoots movies, image stabilization, ISO goes 3 stops higher, shoots twice as many fps, and has less noise than both. I just got a K-R and the build quality is awesome and the button layout is really easy. My only gripe is the battery life.
