| | | Posted by Emperor Wang It just struck me as odd that the whole of the western world freaked right the fuck out (and justifiably so) in response to this atrocity. While the folks most affected by other wars in recent memory have been generally "off-white", and our collective response to those events seemed to have been more on the 'meh' side. The skin-tone of the victims here seems preceptively related to the degree of of moral outrage shown from the rest of the western world. That's all I was trying to point out.
| As a Dutchie I can explain. It's happening way closer to home and culturally we are more on the same level. We see apartment buildings and hospitals of our close neighbors being bombed to hell and civilians making molotov cocktails to fight off the invaders. Not many Ukrainians were living in my country (before a massive amount of people started volunteeringly taking refugees into their house) but there are a huge amount of Polish people. This maybe also builds a bridge between Slavic countries and us. Polish civilians are doing an incredible job taking care of refugees and bringing stuff that's needed to the border, especially knowing that the country isn't very wealthy. They basically do more than anyone has done for them in World War 2, when everyone pussied out and they were on their own. We see mostly women and children coming in. In the beginning we even saw the dads dropping them off and driving back to Ukraine to fight. The women here immediately start asking for work, almost uncomfortably because you want to give them some time to rest but they just have this mentality of standing up for themselves. It's in stark contrast with the constant influx of refugees from the Middle East: young fit MEN, hundreds a week, often from now relatively safe countries or skipping many safe countries to get here because of the free money (yes we have that). You see them dwelling the streets and in range of the overcrowded refugee centers people get robbed, houses are robbed, shops close because of the constant shoplifting etc. Meanwhile they can live for free on tax money without ever contributing to society. It's just letting in the trojan horse of cultures and religions that give zero fucks about our western freedom that was fighted for. Some even openly having a Muslim religious motivation of 'war' against the Christians, Jews and non-religious. That said, the whole of western Europe is already hugely multicultural, in my city over 50% of the residents is non-caucasian. Although it gives trouble with criminality in certain groups I can honestly say that it's pretty safe here and we can live together. Saying it all has to do with skin colour is a very American way of looking at it, I guess. I recently watched the 'love is blind' show on Netflix and I was shocked by the amount of racism openly showing, with a white guy having to convince an old black dad that he can marry and be a good man to his daughter. The dad would've rather kept the black blood line intact. Something like that is unthinkable here in western Europe, so there's that.

| | | This article by the Washington Post is the best one so far I’ve found for explaining the current state of Chernobyl in an objective way. It also has lots of pictures/diagrams to aid in explanations, which never hurts. It has also been established as fact, or at least extremely likely, that the original civilian Chernobyl staff are still being held by Russian forces while working and maintaining the plant - around 200 people. The Russians allegedly damaged the power supply sometime on March 9th (the article didn’t say if this was believed to be intentional or not) leaving Chernobyl completely incommunicado and without power for about two days. https://www.washin...obyl-nuclear-risk/ The article does not, however, take into account the Ukrainian government’s new claims that Russia is planning to sabotage the defunct nuclear power plant now under their control. Though this has not been confirmed as far as I know, I wouldn’t put it past them given their careless and horrific actions thus far. As I understand it, one of the (I’m getting the feeling there are a few) ‘worst case scenarios,’ would be if the plant lost containment and the radiation from the spent rods was able to get deep enough into the soil to contaminate the groundwater. The danger isn’t as great as it would be if this were an active plant, but it’s certainly not good.

| | | story on reuters has me a wee nervous... apparent Putin has approached China for more equipment. this changes the face of things should China get dragged into this fracas. So far, things are not going well for russia right now from an operational standpoint. Their equipment was not maintained properly during the downtime, the troops are poorly trained and their logistical organization is a nightmare. I could organize a better invasion than these people. A story from NBC News is stating that a fair amount of Ukrainians are just saying fuck it and going home. i still don't know if this is going to end with the russians heading home or putin pushing the history eraser button, but it all has me super fucking nervous. I mean, i grew up during the cold war. This shit was every day, especially living fifty miles from a primary target. But the Soviet Union fell and we figured, well that was fun. and we'd never have to deal with it again. Now... it's an every hour concern, i guess. i am glad the No Fly Zone idea got shot down... that would definitely kicked of world war 3 in a second. NATO planes whacking russian planes... yeah, that would go over SO well... (eyeroll). So for now, I guess we wait and see and hope for the best. fuck, that was what we did for forty years... hope for the best. and expect the worst.
