| | | Posted by RobertB So, any thoughts for next month? Do we keep it the second Sunday, 6/14 (Father's Day isn't until the third Sunday)? Meet at Hunky's again, or pack up for elsewhere? Would it be too soon to try for Tyler State Park in June? Or does that need to be a separate trip (possibly worthy of a convention star)?
|
Hey. I was wondering if there was still any sort of meet up happening on 6/14. I am from Oklahoma City, and got into exploring about three years ago. Haven't got to do too much of it with others, it would be nice to meet some others who enjoy it too! I am going down to Dallas 6/11 to see Doug Stanhope and thought about staying a day or two in Dallas and enjoying the city, but if you guys still have any sort of meet up planned. I may stay through Sunday and attend!

| | | Well, it snuck up on us again... the event notification went out about the meetup in two weeks, so I guess that's when we'll have it! Sunday June 14 -- should we just bow to the power of inertia, and have it at Hunky's in Oak Cliff again? Good burgers, not too expensive.

I'm all out of ideas, myself, but we have been... resourceful... in the past. Sometimes in ways that are better off discussed in person, rather than on a public forum, knowwhutimean?

| | | Oh! So is Sunday a sure bet? I would llooovvveee to do a little exploring after. If so.. I'll definitely try and stick around the Dallas area for the weekend. Aside from the meet. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas of things to do in Dallas. Thursday I am seeing Doug Stanhope. I plan to check out the aquarium, half price books, and maybe the 6th floor museum possibly. I also heard about this place called Dick's? The staff is supposed to be rude and unruly on purpose- sounds interesting.

| | | A visit to Half Price Books would be pretty cool. Of course, I assume you're talking about the flagship location at Northwest Highway and Central. It's huge. For another perspective, though, look up a joint called Paperbacks Plus. It's tiny, but absolutely crammed with books. I think Dick's Last Resort is probably going to be a letdown, but I don't do the drinking-in-a-bar thing, so I wouldn't know. There are probably better ways to have a unique Dallas nightlife experience -- Lower Greenville and Deep Ellum come to mind right away. The Dallas World Aquarium is awfully expensive, but I've heard it's nice. I've always heard good things about the Sixth Floor Museum, but if you don't make it there, you can go stand on the "X"s painted on Elm Street like the rest of the tourists. Really, they do that -- wait for a red light, run into the street, and try to get their picture taken before the light turns green. It's almost like they're hoping to die where Kennedy bought the farm. But you might also want to check out another Kennedy-related site close to Hunky's: the Texas Theater, where Oswald was arrested. It's on Oak Cliff's downtown strip, arguably the most vibrant stretch of open-air retail in town. The Charco Broiler nearby has good home cookin', and may be worthy of hosting some future meetup. My favorite Dallas attraction, though, is the DART rail system. Take the train and stop at the only subway station in the Southwest. Then, watch carefully going north, and see if you can spot the unfinished Knox-Henderson Station. It's where the wall changes from sprayed concrete to cinderblocks. I can virtually guarantee we will *not* be scheduling an exploration of that particular locale, dammit. Edit: Just looked up that Doug Stanhope guy. The bar he's playing at is within stumbling distance of DART's LBJ/Skillman rail station. The next stop north, Forest Lane Station, is the only DART station I know of within walking distance of a cheap motel (roach class). Something to keep in mind when making your party plans. | | | Time would be better spent at the Big Red, the courthouse museum. One of the best exhibits I have seen. The aquarium is nice if you can deal with little kids. But the courthouse is better. Good choice in comedy, btw.

| | | I was talking about the main Half Price Books. I went there about three years ago with some friends after a night at Texas Frightmare. I thought it was a pretty awesome store, I was so bummed I didn't have any money on me to get anything, if I wanted to get home anyway. Paperbacks Plus, eh? I will have to give that place a look, thanks for the tip! Dick's Last Resort is pretty much just that for me, I really don't do the drinking-in-a-bar thing either, I am only 21 and I am kinda shy and I don't kno, haha. Lower Greenville and Deep Ellum .. I keep seeing these places pop up whhen looking for stuff to do. I love marine life I actually looking forward to the Dallas World Aquarium quite a bit! I don't think I will be running to any X's. I am sure I could find a lot cooler ways to die than in traffic. Texas Theater, The Charco Broiler- sounds interesting! DART rail system..unfinished Knox-Henderson Station. Is this unfinished and forgotten about, or just in the process of being built? Also, is the rail system cheap? Thanks for all the input! I'm still a little curious.. is there a meet up for sure? If not I don't plan on staying in Texas past Saturday afternoon probably, but if so I will try and occupy myself until so. Stanhope rules! I'm glad to meet someone else who "doesn't take s--t too seriously", that joke either totally worked or totally make me look like an ass.

The unfinished station was excavated, but never finished out. For a long time, you could catch a glimpse of the roughed-out station area as the train passed by, but they eventually bricked it up. When DART first built the rail line, nobody knew whether it would be successful, and Knox-Henderson residents and businesses successfully blocked the station from being built in their neighborhood. 10 years later, the rail system is a rousing success, and K-H businesses would be kicking themselves for their short-sightedness... except there's no room to kick yourself, there's too much traffic. $3 for a day pass, good on rail or bus. $5 for a day pass that lets you take the train all the way to Fort Worth (except Sunday) and ride the buses there, too. Linky goodness: DART (Dallas): http://www.dart.org/ Trinity Railway Express (Dallas to FW): http://www.trinityrailwayexpress.org/ The T (FW bus): http://www.the-t.com/ The big Half Price Books is about a half mile from Park Lane Station. Only we Americans would consider that a long walk. Meetup is for sure on June 14. If you develop an urge to keep taking public transit, you'd take the #42 (dest sign "Hampton Station"). But the bus (and train) don't run as often on Sunday.

So what you're saying is there IS an abandoned and unfinished rail station?

Yes, absolutely and confirmably. But it's closed up tight, and from a newspaper article a few years back I know that DART police walk the full six-mile length of the tunnel after the last train runs and before the first train the next day, to make sure that nobody has put themselves in a position to become hobo souffle. I suspect that's why they bricked up the roughed-out station -- to make it easier to verify that nobody is taking advantage of the permanent 72-degree underground heating/cooling.

Ledbetter Station used to have a few roach motels (pay by the hour) nearby, and the station on the TRE line that serves the medical center has some nicer hotels within walking distance. For places to eat: Cafe Brazil (walking distance from Lovers Lane Station), Herrera's (across from either Westmoreland or Hampton Station)...there's another Herrera's next to Old Parkland.
