Figured it was time to say hi, since I've been bouncing around this site for almost 3 years now.

I've come to UER because I'm fascinated by industrial decay and abandonments, but mostly because I'm trying to find those kinds of locations for doing photography... Admittedly I'm really champing at the bit to get full member access since Ottawa, Ontario seems rather thin for locations - at least, that I know of! I can tell you I'll never be the most active forum member, but I'm going to try and make a few meetups, and join others in a bit of exploration - I can promise I'll get a few great photos out of it!

More about me from my Flickr profile:

It bothers me that 95% of the world is blissfully unaware of 95% of the world. I take notes & snaps of my day-to-day work of running various pieces of the Internet and other infrastructure, and when 'common folk' end up seeing the working pieces of the things that make background of reality - they're always intrigued. It's like I gave them a window into what's at the other end of their keyboard.

This is why I'm fascinated with ruins, abandoned factories, industrial settings, curious urban landscapes. I want people to see that just around the corner, is a small, but critical cog in the gears of the world... and that not only are your opportunities to see it fleeting, but in this day and age of consolidation, cost-cutting and globalization - they won't be there for long.

I document the world today, as it was yesterday, as tomorrow, it won't be.

I've been around for almost a year now but I guess I've never really posted before.

Hello! You can call me Beatnik. I live in Wisconsin and it's kinda boring as far as exploring goes, but I've found a few interesting places.

I have three cats ((as evident in the CATS thread)), am 21, and really can't tell you any more that you wouldn't learn from reading my posts.

If you live in Wisconsin and wanna go out to explore sometime, send me an IM and we'll work something out!

Howdy everyone!

I was referred to this site by Revsm, awesome place you guys have got here!

I had no idea this kind of thing was so "organized" but I've been doing it for quite a while now. (that seems to be a recurring theme on here, I've noticed)

Some background:

8 yrs - High ropes course and rock climbing instructor
9 yrs - Scuba (basic/adv/deep/night/wreck/rescue cert.)
5 yrs - Own and operate a tree service, specializing in hazardous dismantling and rigging.
2 yrs - L.A. County EMT cert.

Anyhow, I own a TON of gear. I'm not such a great photographer, but I like to get pics of places I go. I do alot of solo work since I've had trouble finding ppl to go with over the years, but I always make sure someone knows where I'm at and a time I've gotta call in by.

Um okay, places I've gone;

A defunct gutted (but not vandalized) Nike Missle base in Socal, the missle silo museum in Az, several mines all over socal and Az, (btw, lookin for a few ppl who are interested in doing scuba in flooded mines), several drains and pipes in a few different cities between Ca, Az, & Ill., a few industrial buildings, and a bunch of other just random stuff. I'll try to get some pictures up soon.

I like this thing alot of the people have on here about seeing the old defunct and abandoned buildings. I've felt alot like that about wreck diving. There's whats left of these old ships, some of them massive and others as small as a one-cabin sailboat. While you're there its just You, and It. And noone really sees that stuff cuz its all underwater besides, but it makes you wonder what they were like back before they sunk, try to get a feel for the lines of them, what they looked like in their prime. Some of its kinda sad almost, but its always an adventure.

Hope to meet up with some people locally and do some vertical mine shaft access, and some exploring in other shafts; I've been really fond of those for quite a while.

Thanks!

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

Oh, what a glorious occasion it was when I finally discovered that I wasn't the only one who got off on trespassing, haha! Just a joke, but seriously, I've always been one to go diving head first into the abandoned buildings, suspicious caves, tunnels, you name it. I never thought to take photography, but rather I enjoyed the experience in itself. I fill out these "intro's" too often, and here, I feel as though my being here speaks volumes. Be that as it may. My name is Phillip. But now that I know that I am no longer an outcast, and that in fact, I am not alone in my interests, I'mma call Phillip my "slave name". Just call me Number. Born on the Nineteenth, and 19 being the number I always gamble on, it'd better be lucky! So there you go! LuckyNo-19. voila.

glad to be here!

(Syrianne -> French Canadian… Please forgive me my many mistakes)

It all started with Jurassic Park!

When I was young, I wanted to dig to find “old stuff”… Discover how things are changing by digging up things of the past. When I was young I was exploring forests mostly.

I forgot that dream quite quickly. But then, there was *that* building. You know; something that has been standing before your eyes for a while but that you never really realized it was there all that time. But suddenly, each time I was in a bus or a car nearby, I was automatically looking around, trying to see that amazing, enormous piece of industrial decay. I was too shy to ask what it was and so, for almost an entire year, I kept looking at it, dreaming of how spooky, full of history, this building must be inside… Without ever asking what it exactly was.

Weeks later, a friend of mine tried to get me in Montreal’s Dow Brewery… But there was not way to get in without making me freak out: I’m afraid of heights and I was too skeptical about what may be inside to “risk my life” (heh!) that way. Some days later, that friend and my lover were talking about Urban Exploration… And I learned that day the name of the building that became an obsession for me months ago: Montreal Canada Malting. At that moment, I started looking for pictures of the place and I discovered at the same time what I missed at Montreal’s Dow.

So I gained back that old interest only by looking at pictures from different websites! To be honest with you, I never explored yet. I look forward to start in the next weeks / months!

I've been reading this forum for a week or 2 now. Also I learned a lot on Quebec's history by looking at the Database! I can't wait to learn and share more with you guys!

Hello everyone.

My name is Matt and I stumbled on to this site by accident. I have been into exploring since I have been about 12 years old and it is nice to see that there are other people out there who find this a viable hobby / lifestyle. Most of my friends think I'm crazy for doing what I do. Anyway I'm looking forward to sharing stories and adventure with fellow explorers.

Hey guys. I am glad to have finally found a community of fellow UE lovers. I have been climbing old buildings and exploring abandoned and out of the way places for years, and have fallen out of the habit of late, would love to get serious/back in the game! I am in the SF/Bay Area region, so if there is anyone who wants some company on a trip, shoot me a message to see if you might be interested in having me along.

Hey there everyone, name's Kevin.

I found my way to this forum by researching an old water facility that my friends and I stumbled across. Exploring and photography are hobbies of mine, even if I'm not any good at the latter.

I always hear how this town is boring, but stumbling across the facility mentioned above and getting access to another closed down building (as I worked with that company), it really opened my eyes as to how expansive and interesting this small city really is. So I'm driven by further intrigue to find other places and investigate them.

That's my hey y'all. Glad to be here.

Hi, I'm Ali from Reading, Uk.

I tend to explore around Western Europe, and have made roadtrips to Belgium, Germany and Scotland in recent years.

My first love is asylums and I've seen maybe 20-30 of the British ones. I love industrial stuff as well, power stations get my juices flowing.

I want to get my teeth into the US at some point, but that might be a while away.

Hello everyone!

My name is Jason and I reside in Scarborough. I have been exploring for many years now, new and old. Places I have been and places I haven't, searching for that place that hasn't been found. I'm an amateur photographer and take advantage of anything abandoned and decaying. If there is anyone in the area that wants/needs someone to go exploring with just give me a link and I'm sure we can set something up.

Cavemen were once secluded to caves. Then they were released, they were released to explore the world!
