That's the observatory in Oak Bay. The old dome-shaped thing on the mountain. The roof of the Empress pops open...like in one of those Monty Python cartoons...and Her Majesty's flying monkies come out to attack vagrants and anarchists.

I know there is an abandoned mineshaft (blocked off now) on Mount Doug. As well as a goldmine up at Goldstream National Park "Old mining shafts and tunnels are all that remains of the gold rush that Goldstream River experienced during the mid-19th century." Ho-ly-shit. Anyone care to Czech this out with me? Gimme' a PM

See around the bottom left of the map "Gold Mine" seems to be right off of the "Gold Mine" trail. Is this all bunk? or worth checking out?

Yeah I knew about that, don't expect to find big chuncks of pure gold laying around I don't know what the state of the mine is, or if there are tunnels.
hi i explore mines around here thee are two shafts at that spot on goldsteam one is around 25 feet into the rock the other one is a vertical shaft thats covered with bars if there are others i would like to find them.
The vertical shaft in Mount Doug has been filled. The horizontal tunnel was still there last time I checked... rather boring though.
by the way does anyone know of the short tunnel underbay street by butler brothers
[last edit 2/6/2006 3:31 PM by kowalski - edited 1 times]

The tunnel used to take streetcars from the Rock Bay Bridge and under Bay Street enroute to Esquimalt. THe wooden swing bridge connected the Bay Street side with the Victoria Gas Works site, and downtown Victoria.

Not sure how to take that......but for those who are interested: The second bridge across Rock Bay (the first was in use from 1862-1871) was constructed in 1872 and remained in service until 1914, when it was removed from service. This was supposed to be a temporary closure, but in the next five years, municipal politics plodded along without actually accomplishing anything (things apparently haven't changed much since then). Engineers and other experts were contracted to look at the existing bridge and give their opinions/reports. Many options for repair and/or replacement were considered, studied, studied and studied, and nothing was done. Every proposal carried with it a price tag, and council rejected each option due to required costs. Meanwhile, the existing bridge was not maintained, and decayed past the point of return. Years of suggestions, court actions and public discussions about replacing the bridge followed. There was a court action launched in 1919 against the City of Victoria, seeking remedy for pulling the bridge down. It failed, as the judge ruled that it should be a civil action, not a criminal one. In the end, the streetcars were routed along other rails, the bridge was never rebuilt, and the tunnel remains an interesting piece of Victoria's transit history.
