Made this video recently, I have walked it a few times, but I decided I put a video camera on top of a DIY built Styrofoam craft and it sent down "Fireman's Slide".

Good day!

The ...BZZZT... is blocked, Hack the ripper and I use the same program as you are. We checked that drain out a few months ago. We also have many other places in mind now thanks to this program / software.

We gained access using ...BZZZT... although it wasn't what we were looking for. My suggestion though is that I wouldn't be posting those maps publicly as you are as for you don't want these places burned, or the program itself closed for good.

A lot of hardwork could be waisted, and forever lost, just saying.......

Yes I have had similar experiences investigating Ross Bay most seem to have been blocked off in recent years for whatever reason, I once watched about ten city workers standing behind a cube van watching a bank of about 5 video monitors as they probed the tunnels with cameras, I regret not asking if I could have a look.

And yes I agree with you about the displaying maps in general, but I don't believe the Ross Bay Tunnels are that of a large "secret" anymore in the years since the book Michelle Remembers it has sent explorers centering on Ross Bay Cemetery. If there wasn't satanists in Ross Bay before the book Michelle Remembers there probably is now or has been since, even if you don't believe in satanism there are people out there that do and are dangerous it is simply ideology, no different from being a member of Al-Qaeda/ISIS.

Yeah, I'm very aware of the book. I agree if there wasn't any satanists in the past, its most definitely possible now for sure! I love all that creepy stuff. I would love to check out The McNeil Creeper some time if you're interested.

The Tod house, 2564 Heron Street, built 1851, the oldest house in Western Canada, the rumor is John Tod the original owner of this house (HBC chief trader and one of the original members of BC's Legislative Council) had tunnels leading to the water for smuggling illegal items, it is also rumored that there are other houses in Oak Bay with similar tunnels. The Tod house is supposedly extremely haunted. It is very odd that in 1952 the skeleton of a headless woman was found when a hole for an oil tank was being dug it is believed the bones had been encased in quick lime to dissolve them. Anyone at least explored the storm drain systems in this area? Or know the era of the system? Why construct a second tunnel when you already have one and can be built with a logical excuse of drainage, or anyone know of any other houses in Oak Bay with tunnels? The house is now owned by the Municipality of Oak Bay but rented out as a private residences currently.

Anyone know anything about portable air monitoring devices for confined spaces? Anyone know the best model/brand to buy? Don't want to pay too much, but want something I know will work.

While I'm on the topic anyone have any safety tips/bad experiences to learn from?

I've decided to share some details from the last expedition, as a friendly reminder of the safety risks we face underground.

Anyways, so SD and i are plodding along through the drain......then we get to this RCP, that's barely crawlable on the stomach. You've seen the pix.. Smells kinda bad. I go in first. I waited for a minute, with my head fully in the (more) confined space, but within SD's reach.....just in case. The air's obviously safe enough. We both go through. Then there's this big square brick room. Above us is a 250lb manhole. SD and i are now covered in slime (mud or decomposed sewage....who knows?) Then there's this huge, ancient, rusted hatch on the wall in front of us. It's not quite closed. We can see through behind it, a little bit. There's a space! It also smells really bad. Remember, right now we're in a very confined space, and crawling back out is quite tough and awkward as it is. We want to know what's behind that hatch. So we pry it open.
Then bad air floods our room. We begin to worry even more. We stick our heads through the hole briefly. More bad air. And then no more bad air. The air seems fresher, suddenly. SD and I totally freak.

(SD managed to keep his cool pretty well...........but i sure didn't).

H2S=knocks out sense of smell once it's in high enough concentrations to harm you. We both know that. You guys should also know that.

So we close the hatch in case it is H2S. We wait a minute. Nothing happens. We seriously consider leaving. I propose one quick opening of the hatch to take a fast photo. Then I smell foul air. Phew. It's not H2S. Just bad smells. Relief.
We realize that the differences in odour are from the natural airflow of the spaces. If there had been oxygen depletion, carbon monoxide, or H2S, we would've been dead by now. We now finally felt it was more or less safe enough to open the hatch again and look.
We just want to stress to any explorers that anything can happen underground. We thought we were going into a storm drain. But our maps betrayed us. We ended up poking our nose into infrastructure that was a part of the sanitary sewers. And not just any part of the sanitary sewers. A spot that was in very close proximity to a pump station that handles huge quantities of sludge a day. There is no way in hell that, had we been able to know, we would have done what we did without a gas meter. We were unwittingly putting ourselves at risk.
All we're trying to say is, firstly, it's highly important to just simply comprehend the nature of the risks you face when crawling around any subterranean space. You are underground, no one can hear you scream!
And it's good to continuously refresh yourself with a bit of worst-case scenario thinking--because worst-case scenarios happen all the time. Sewer workers take special training where they learn what to do if someone asphyxiates or gets injured, and needs to be rescued. Most of us are the type that want to avoid the kind of environments that sewer workers often toil in.....but anything can happen, just as something happened to us. Always play it by ear when in the underground. You may not need a gas meter, but you will need your intuition. Sometimes you can enter a space with safe air, but make it unsafe. Walk into muck that starts to bubble furiously when stirred? Well, safe at first, but it clearly doesn't want to be disturbed!!
The underground wasn't built with human comfort or safety in mind. It serves a utilitarian purpose, to carry away water and wastewaters. These spaces must be respected much in the same way you respect, say, being near wild animals, or explosives, or whatnot.
And with that said, I don't want to sound negative or anything; just remember, safety first!
happy explorations,
NK

And just one thing: be careful when opening sanitary sewer manhole covers. There are many stories of sewer workers who don't follow proper protocols, open the manholes, then built up H2S gas comes pouring out, and they faint. If the gas dissipates before it kills them, then they often fall and clobber their heads, and often falling head-first down the manhole shaft and dying instantly.
Honestly, if you don't know how to test air properly, then it's probably a good idea to leave these particular manholes alone.

As per,

Without having read the last few posts, might I suggest...advise, actually...that you find some other means of communicating your plans? There are lots of people reading this, and some of these people are idiots, and still others are enforcement. To paraphrase the old war-time expression: loose lips get entrances sealed, pronto.

And get a gas detector. Your life could depend on it.

Finally...Michelle Remembers is bullshit.

Not sure if you were speaking directly to me or not but in general yes I agree with you about communicating plans openly, didn't really think I had, I don't believe there is anything on this forum really that cynical, devious or a illegal, might as well be posting about jaywalking experiences. I would hope any enforcement would use common sense and use resources far better.

If people want to argue safety, in my case I take no chances, I make sure I know what I'm getting into before I do it, and make sure I have the proper gear. It is certainly no more dangerous and possibly less dangerous than other widely accepted pastimes rafting down a river, skydiving, scuba diving, bungee jumping, rock climbing or boating off Victoria or for that matter walking or driving down the street above, there is always unknowns/risks in every situation.

If vandalism's a worry to people, I would say the vast majority of people on this forum don't participate in that such activity nor do they inspire to, I certainly have no intention to vandalize anything. The few that do it's mostly a bit of graffiti in a tunnel and is not going to upset most or cause harm these tunnels usually need a little sprucing up anyway, give the city workers something to look at when they're working, if you want people doing graffiti anywhere these tunnels are the place to let them do it, may keep them from doing it above ground.

As far as Michelle Remembers you may be right about the bullshit part, but there's always some extremists out there who may have been inspired possibly by the Michelle Remembers book more than anything else, may actually do some of the things depicted down in the tunnels since the release of the book, I really don't know however, just thinking out loud on that last part more than anything.

KublaKhan I appreciate all your posts on this forum over the years, I've been watching this forum for a long time and have recently been rereading the entire forum over the past while.
