I think they would be considered a "deadly weapon" if you were to use them in self defense ... A regular size 2D maglite is like a club; cops used to carry 5Ds around here but have opted for smaller versions; anything smaller than what they carry shouldn't be an issue. You don't want to have a bigger stick than the man with the gun.

| | | EDIT: I swear I was typing this up before the thread was moved! My primary is a FN Minimi sling-attached to my tactical vest. The belt ammunition pattern is as follows: armor piercing, hollow point, tracer, repeat. My utility is a short-barrel Sentinel Arms Striker-12 attached to my tactical vest on the back of my right shoulder next to my rope and grappling hook. The cylinder ammunition pattern is as follows: 00 buck, 1oz slug, #6 bird, repeat. My sidearm is a suppressed Glock 18C with 33 round magazine and rail-mounted light/laser carried in a modified drop-leg holster that has been attached to my climbing harness. The magazine ammunition pattern is as follows: 115gr FMJ, 115gr +P JHP, 124gr +P JHP, 147gr JHP, repeat. In my UrbEx vehicle (urban camouflage M998 HMMWV) I keep a Barrett M82A1 and a Springfield M79. Did you want details on the high explosives too or just the firearms?
EDIT to add useful info: I bring with me what I think I will need for the area I am in, not the location I am exploring. Meaning if I have to park 1/4 mile away from the location in the ghetto after dark and I have to pass 6 drug dealers and 4 pimps to gain access, I plan for that. The best plan, in this case, would be to pick a different spot. [last edit 1/20/2010 7:50 PM by RollingBlackout - edited 2 times]

Kind of playing post tag here lol. I was typing my reply when the "get serious" post was made, and I was editing my post when you replied. My bad!

A 20' flashlight is just a flashlight. Very different than carrying a baseball bat or something like that. If you were cornered, you could get away with whacking someone with it. If you used it properly in a situation that req'd self defence, I can't see them questioning you on it... A bigger issue here might be how to know when to justify use.

| | | If you are worried about self defense from unsavory characters then bring a small knife and know some basics on how/where to cut. For instance, in a knife fight you obviously want to cut on the back on the hand to disarm them and then you can just walk away. Anything to keep distance between you and an unsavory character is all you should need though. That being said, I don't bring any weapons with me nor do I actively seek out potential weapons in a site. I've never needed it and don't think I ever will need it.

Anyway, I almost always have my tripod, can of tab open soup, and cigars on me. I have yet to run into any confrontations on an explore, but if you do manage to run into a violent individual and soup and cigars don't work, the tripod works pretty good as self defense. I'm sure send4hlp or corley can vouch for that one.

L-M-F-A-O that was pretty much the best beating via a drunk I've ever seen in my life. With his own tripod, my god. After seeing that I absolutely will carry a tripod with me from now on. Toy light sabers were surprisingly painful to be hit with as well.

| | | I had a friend who carried a to-go box of bbq ribs with him on a trek through a particularly unsavory part of town. His reasoning is that everyone likes bbq, and if they didn't want it then he would just hit them with the ribs.

I like it / use one. Even when I'm carrying a knife, the light is a more effective weapon, and there are no legal worries from just having it. [last edit 1/20/2010 10:44 PM by MindHacker - edited 1 times]
