Wow, great link!!!

My favorite title in there is "Another file in the endless series, How to Kill Your Friends" 8-)

Range vs Reliability.

... and generally if you're far enough away a shotgun is preferable you can probably move away from the bear. Or up a tree.

A bear comes into the campsite the axe isn't going to not need ammo, isn't going to misfire and I'm not going to miss swing.

a Deer slug is like this big around (on my monitor):

./***\.
_____
_____
_____

That could easily miss something vital or miss altogether.
Buckshot might not go far enough into him or might miss anything vital.
Birdshot ... isn't typically enough kill a human, accidentally. (it can but its rare)

And yeah, I'm serious.
a maul may be effective against a human, but a bear is going to be on top of you before you can get a decent swing in

A maul may be more effective against wood. If you are anticipating any angry wood attacks you may need to take a maul. Otherwise, cigarettes, a wary eye, and a heavy flashlight should probably cover all of your bases.

Tell me about it. I work with other people's wood on a daily basis. And it's true, some wood is bigger than others. With the really big one's you're completely worn out after just a few hours, and there's a bigger mess.

Ya'll talkin about trees? Oh, maybe not.

I never got a reply back from that guy about coming and splitting firewood for a day. I wanted to see his mad maul skillz. And maybe his numbchuck skillz.

**EDIT**

Due to the incessant risk of violent hobos squatting in buildings during winter, I am trying to find legal ways of being safe. If you have any creative ideas,..

I'd suggest you stay away from the places where violent hobos are incessantly out to kill/maim/pour scalding oil on/put to the rack/eat innoncent urbexers. And whats this about wanting a legal way of being safe while committing what is often an illegal activity?
Here's a creative idea. Bring a track-mounted drone with motion-sensing laser beams and dual automatic machine pistols.

Or just take a maglite and no credit cards.

The most violent hobos I've ever met were on boxcar trains. Throw them off and you'll be fine though. (btw, dont let them throw YOU off)

Can't we just let this stupid thread die? It's a topic that's been discussed to death, and this particular discussion has meandered from legitimate, on topic conversation, to snarky comments, to the best way to defend against a bear attack (God forbid you find one of THOSE in your local steam plant!) to the merits of axes vs guns vs chainsaws, to concealed carry laws, to the physics of how to kill a man with a gun, and everywhere in between all those topics, all covered with a thick layer of sweet, delicious flame sauce and a healthy peppering of nerd rage. Just. Let. It. Die. fortheloveofgodpleeease!!

I'm reminded of the scene in Indiana Jones "Raiders of the Lost Ark",
where the crazy ninja guy is busting all those moves and Indy watches for a second then just pulls out his pistol and shoots the guy.

I approve of this thread turning into one about defending against bears during exploring, as I personally regularly carry a backpack of them when I'm out UER'ing.

Hello fellow explorers, I am wondering what kind of weapons, tools, training any of you have or use while exploring. Due to the incessant risk of violent hobos squatting in buildings during winter, I am trying to find legal ways of being safe. If you have any creative ideas, tools, weapons, etc, please let me know. It may also be helpful to include information about your location...ie whether or not concealed carry is legal.

-Dave

Can you (and not only you, but everyone here) reply how many violent hobos you have encountered during urbex?

I have made about 180 location visits now. number of occasions I I have encountered people while in or trying to enter a building:
- cops: 3
- security / owners / workers: 3
- angry hunters (with a gun and dogs): 1
- copper scrappers: 2
- other explorers: 2 (all 2 parties on the same location!)
- tourists: too often
- nosy neighbours: 2
- friendly neighbours: 5
- ghosts: 1
- people performing sexual acts: 2 (1 masturbator, 1 fetish photoshoot)
- hobos: 2
- hobos initially friendly: 1
- hobos initially angry: 0
- hobos wanting money: 1
- hobos friendly after giving money: 1 (that doesn't include the initially friendly hobo, we didn't give him money)
- consultants with cliboard and a suit: 1 (in same location as said money-wanting hobo AND 1 of the security guards - I wondered what discussion they had)

For comparison: # of times I have wounded myself during urbex (and I'm quite careful): 3

The only people who were really unfriendly were the hunters, but in that case, they all had a gun and were with many.

Conclusion: chance you run into a bum, which is unfriendly and stays unfriendly after you offering him money and wants to physically attack you... In my opinion: far far far less than otherwise wounding myself, getting shot at by people who shoot as a trade or encounter law enforcement and/or security.

Also: urbex is mainly about visiting abandoned places. If there is a hobo living there, you are infiltrating into someone's private home, which in my respect is crossing the line for urbex or urban adventure in any way

Tijmen

P.S. Therrin: I still don't agree with anyone carrying guns at all (other than police), but I like your gun attitude.
