When I was a student teacher in the inner city of Rochester, I learned just by talking to people in the area, the golden rule: Guns draw guns. Meaning: If you are walking through an abandonment, particularly one that a homeless man considers "home" and he sees you with a piece, a knife, a club, 6 cell flashlight or anything else that can be considered threatening, you have a situation where he could get defensive when he wouldn't have been otherwise.
This point was also mentioned 300 miles away in Pittsburgh. I work with several convicted felons who had done hard time back in the day, (attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, ect) and they all agree that your wits and intelligence are your best defence. That brings up another point. Many homeless people are cool no matter what, and if they arent, a couple beers or a 5 will be all you need to subdue them. Remember that they are PEOPLE, not wild, rabid animals. Give them a cautious benefit of a doubt.
On the other hand, lets say that you are armed, and get attacked by a hobo. A lot of them were in the military once upon a time, and if they grew up on or at least spent a couple of years on the streets, chances are that they have some serious fight in them and depending on what your weapon is, there is a high possibility that it will be THEIR weapon at the end of the day. Guns draw guns. Your tact and wit are the only weapons you should carry. If you really get worried, take some martial arts classes.

MANY people, (the guy writing this sentence included) can tell you of times when a firearm did the exact opposite of what your bias is describing.

Concealed vs Overt.
Never let you opponent see what you're packing until the absolute last moment possible. That goes for ANY weapon. The element of surprise is a big advantage.
But if your opponent doesn't know what you may or may not be carrying and that in itself is a deterrent. Maybe you have a knife, maybe you have a gun, maybe you've got 20 lbs of high grade explosive and the urge to scream "Jihad" ... if he doesn't know what you may or may not have; he doesn't know if he can win or not.
Also, people who tend to go around flaunting their guns shouldn't have them.
And I forgot to say ... martial arts training is bullshit, useless, and a scam. Most "karate schools" (or similar) make you pay 1000s of dollars to advance in belts and you rarely learn anything useful before you've pumped way too much time and money into it.
You'd be better off studying human anatomy and learning from military hand to hand fighting manuals. [last edit 1/27/2010 5:32 AM by \/adder - edited 1 times] "No risk, no reward, no fun." "Go all the way or walk away" escensi omnis...

The guideline I've seen is something along the lines of: The person who shows their weapon would rather NOT have to use it. It's the guy who's not showing that you have to worry about.
Of course, it's not a rule by any means.
I'm a "Leave only footprints, take only pornography" kind of guy, myself.

Belt-award-programs are useless, but actual training is not. Especially because it gives you experience fighting. You won't learn which holes you accidentally leave open from reading books, you only learn that from getting hit a few times. You can read about weight transfer, but you really have to get out there and do some pad work for it to become instinctive. Just choose your dojo carefully, or go for a MMA academy, and you shouldn't have to worry you are only buying belts. "That's just my opinion. I would, however, advocate for explosive breaching, since speed and looking cool are both concerns in my job."-Wilkinshire

Would you care to describe the scenario that caused you to pull a gun on someone?
I respectfully decline for many reasons. Between carrying personally for over three years and being around others who have carried my whole life, experience has shown me that the majority of people only want to hear such stories so that they can try to quarterback them or attempt to belittle the carrier.

That wasn't my intention in the first place, but when you suggested that you had done such a thing, you sort of opened yourself up to questions about it.
For the record, I am all for the right to bear arms, including concealed carry, ect. The main point I am trying to address is: When does it become okay to brandish/carry a gun in an abandoned building and to actually use one?

Posted by RollingBlackout That depends on individual state laws. For example, Arizona's justification laws would be located in Arizona Revised Statutes Title 13 Chapter 4.
Truth, that depends entirely on local laws. Think HARD about when you'll draw the gun before you're in danger. You'll have a second or two to decide when you need to, and a lawyer will have all the time in the world to show intent/malice/overkill. Good luck. Achievement Unlocked

I'll just learn from this kid:
Definitely related to Napoleon Dynamite. Looks like he could do with adding a few hours of running into his daily sword routine though. Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)
Re: Defense Tools <Reply # 98 on 1/29/2010 9:57 AM >
First and foremost know your local laws.
My best defense is being freakishly enormous. I'm 6'6" tall and about 400 pounds. People tend to leave me alone. Does make it a bitch to get in some places though. I don't recommend this line of defense because it is a bitch find clothes that fit, or cars for that matter.
I carry 10 percent pepper foam in my camera bag wherever I go. A maglight is a good tool as well, and in texas isn't covered by the penal code. I used to be a bouncer about 20 years ago, and I used both pepper spray and mag lights quite a bit. (a jab from a mag light in the solar plexus will take the fight out of most people) But as others have said, most homeless aren't going to mess with you if you don't screw with them. I'd be more worried about gang bangers/taggers who think they have something to prove.
Also, people who tend to go around flaunting their guns shouldn't have them.
1.
I painted a house w/ this guy. He is a friend of a friend. I guess he did not feel safe, cuz he was carrying two extra clips along w/ the one in the gun.
