The Costner movie you talking about its called The Postman, it was okay. But not his best film.

The book was much much better.

We are going to inherit the earth . There is not the slightest doubt about that. The bourgeoisie may blast and burn its own world before it finally leaves the stage of history. We Are not afraid of ruins. We who ploughed the prairies and built the cities can build again, only better next time. We carry a new world, here in our hearts. That world is growing this minute.

I don't know if these have been mentioned yet but here's a few of my faves

George Washington - it's a pretty bleak film, but all the locations are abandoned school houses, amusement parks, and junkyards.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - obviously cool.

Touch of Evil - great chase scene through some drains

Now that you mention games, I don't think any video game can compare to the abandoned hotel level in F.E.A.R. That is by far the best UE feeling game I've played.

check out the following. Typical B Movie attempts, but great locations!!

Session 9- shot at Danvers!

Boo- Santa Mira Hospital

Death Tunnel- Waverly Sanitarium

All available at your friendly neighborhood Blockbuster.

Yeah I was thinking "Boo" also. Looked like a pretty cool hospital. I havent seen the other 2, but I dont know, I thought Boo was terrible. I mean, it was alright for a good laugh. I just didnt like it. Could just be me. And I just saw Silent Hill a few days ago (yeah, im a little late), I would die if I got the chance to explore an entire town. That would be amazing.

Parts of 'The Prestige' had a UE feel to them, particularly the old building Borden set up his studio in. And the abandoned theater too. Plus, it was actually a decent movie...

Ah, and 'Blade Runner'. The massive abandoned building the last third of the movie takes place in is incredible. I spent some time trying to research the filming locations for the movie, but didn't find anything substantial to determine if the building is still in existence, or even where it is...

Yeah, well, having your planet blown up can have that effect on a species.

i didnt search this but cmon....night of the comet!!

Two sisters, high school seniors in the early 1980s, awaken one morning to blood red skies and the realization that the human race has been wiped out. It becomes apparant that anyone who was not surrounded by steel when the Earth recently passed through the tail of Haley's comet has been reduced to a pile of red ash (the trace elements of human chemical makeup.) They encounter a rebellious Native American man and take over the air waves at a local radio station in an attempt to get help. Unfortunately, they attract the attention of a group of scientists who knew what the effects of the comet would be. They hid underground in a steel laboratory, but idiotically left the vents open. Now, as various survivors of the comet who were only partially surrounded by steel are decaying into flesh-hungry zombies, the scientists are attempting to come up with a vaccine made of the blood of people who were not infected by the comet. Thus the trio must fight their way past not only roving packs of the cannibalistic dead, but also outsmart a pack of scientists desperate not to become that way themselves.

actually the building in the last part of Blade Runner wasn't abandoned. It's called 'The Bradbury Building' and it has been featured in several movies in varying states.
It has a definite appeal and looks great on film.

As for Night of the Comet... there's am movie from my childhood...
