actually the building in the last part of Blade Runner wasn't abandoned. It's called 'The Bradbury Building' and it has been featured in several movies in varying states.
It has a definite appeal and looks great on film.
As for Night of the Comet... there's am movie from my childhood...

thats the landmaster in that photo...the ultimate UE machine, it even traveled in water
in 1999 i was driving down the 10 freeway from hollywood toward burbank and low and behold, there was the landmaster sitting outside of a shop that specialized in autos for movies. i have a shot of it somehwere.

That was the intended result of documenting their existence in the first place. The 'making of' and other assorted extras on that DVD are worth watching.

....i keep exploring drains and subway tunnels and i still haven't found ah C.H.U.D. yet this sucks i think the damn movie lied to me. they are cute i want one as a pet, i mean i under stand the ethics about not taking things from a site but i mean sometimes you have to bend the rules
