I briefly stopped by this place for a party on the weekend, then returned during the day this week. I really liked the lighting in the daytime, though I plan to return at night to get some nighttime shots.

This was my friend's second time exploring, and he was a lot of fun to go out with! Hopefully I can convince him to create an account here someday.

1 - I was trying to make the window in this one look good. I think I kinda succeeded, at the expense of everything else...

7

8 - Safe cracking! I'm happy I finally know a place in Winnipeg with a safe

9 - This is on the door of a bathroom stall. Any guesses what it means?

10 - Porno room!

11

12 - I messed up the colours on this one pretty bad, but it wound up looking kinda cool as brown so I did that

13 - Trying to get a picture of the epic spiderweb. It goes floor to ceiling, and quite a long way from side to side

14

15 - I love how this one turned out!

Great shots - and yes, the window looks good. I like the kind of theme you have going in those first few shots, the angles you were using and the use of darkness but still keeping the shots interesting. Very cool

I wanna go Sunday morning when the sun's out. See how it looks in the daytime.

You'll get yer shot.

<edit> also, thanks for the comments! The place felt very videogame-ish, and I think that kinda comes across.

The Free Press has an awesome writeup:
http://www.winnipe...las-132214503.html

It sounds like it got the papermill and soap factory for sure. I don't think there's gonna be much left there.

The comments on that story are good, too.

I was literally 10 minutes away from home when you called me and turned around. You should have called me, I could have picked you up!

I was in bed, just reading 1ajs's texts while trying to fall asleep. Sorry I didn't answer your call, but yeah, in bed.

It seemed like the nice (and warm) option at the time, but in retrospect I wish I'd went. Ohwell...

Also, a little scroll down memory lane here... who says that Canada Packers and Swift Meats were NOT among the best abandonments that Winnipeg EVER had??

the Free Press article has been updated all day:
http://www.winnipe...las-132214503.html

I like how they refer to the problems with "outdoor storage" - you mean it's a junkyard?

It sounds like the soap factory portion is intact, but the papermill is gone. Gonna have to check it out when things calm down and see what it's all about.

Now the big question. Arson? Or neglect? God knows why they kept the power going in that place. I wouldn't be surprised if it was an electrical fire.

That place is no stranger to fires though. Who's seen the gigantic burned out industrial equipment right next to the conveyor belt?

Yeah, and there was a burnt shack next door, too.

The owner suspects arson. Fireman says it's probably gonna be impossible to tell due to the amount of damage. My money's on neglect - that place was a frickin' match. The soap factory next door is, too, I'm shocked it didn't go up too (although there's still time).

Does anyone else fear that UE may soon die off locally? The way property value has gone up people are quick to tear down old buildings as soon as they're no longer used in the name of progress. Maybe I don't get out and explore nearly enough, but there's no denying we've lost some fun ones.

I remember a bit of the same talk happening when Ogilvie and Cold Storage were demolished, but things seem to carry on just fine. There'll always be something to explore.
