It's understandable. Just mentioning the places isn't illegal or anything, but like Iagox said, thieves/vandals/arsonists could easily browse this forum for ideas. and if something did happen to one of these buildings, and it was investigated, I think discussing those buildings on a site of an activity that has the potential to involve illegality would give probable cause/reasonable suspicion (I think the 2nd one, but I always get them confused) to investigate us further. That investigation bit seems like a bit of a stretch, but best to keep a clean record just in case.

I've got a GIS map of the city's drainage system. Labels large drains, their outfall, traces their path inland, labels drainage vs combined systems, and shows land drainage lakes. PM if you want a copy.

UE makes a great conversation starter.
I'll be driving with someone, oh hey you see that parkade? There used to be a 100 year old theater there. We snuck in the night before they tore it down and had a hell of a time.
How else do you expect to increase awareness of neglected heritage buildings without getting the general public interested?

I fumbled across this a couple weeks ago after noticing the boat was still in the slough.

Apparently it is being scrapped eventually. Someone from China bought it for one of the two Caterpillar motors. It is clear that there are still people going on the boat since a door was clearly open. There is security that keeps an eye on it. Also the people that live near it keep an eye on it for "kids going on it to start fires." Which thankfully hasn't happened.

There's a beautiful view of Jupiter in the southwest (? I think) sky at about 5:30 these days, the top half of the sky is dark enough to look pretty dark and have only jupiter stand out and no stars, and in the bottom half the sun is just set so it's a nice colorful glow beneath. I'm going out to the perimeter tomorrow for some clear photos, I also think it'd be cool to get some with a skyline silhouette (eg downtown skyline) in the bottom half of the sky, any suggestions of places I could possibly acquire said skyline shot (that's reasonable/accessible at 5:30 on a weekday)? Not that I'm too lazy to go looking, I will; I just figure you guys know downtown/north better than I do, and for the sake of gas money, some starting points/ideas would be nice
Also, anyone get any pictures of 0mnig1ass after the fire?

By far, Garbage Hill is the BEST place to take skyline pictures. You should dress warm though since it will take a while to climb up it. Also, PM for some pics

Or the one on top of that bowling alley we were on? Trees got in the way a bit but that was about it.

I put in the 5:30 accessible bit because I knew your minds would all jump to rooftops  Also, I don't know if y'all senses of direction are much better than mine, which is crap, but keep in mind I need the skyline to be between me and the southwest sky (it would probably help if I actually knew, but I think it's southwest)
Edit: yea, just checked out google maps, South/south west/ish
Bottom line, I need to be north/east of downtown and have a good view of the skyline

If it's the building I'm thinking of (pit o' death), the stairs to the roof were sealed off last time I was there. You could open it by cutting the rope they use, but then they'll know we were there.
Also, the roof is pretty dark sketch.

Curious_George is widely believed to be the best climber here. I'm pretty good as well, though I rarely do it without safety gear.

Well its been long overdue for me to introduce myself. Long time lurker, never really did any exploring myself because I was too young and too busy.
I grew up loving the mechanical aspects of all these industrial buildings, every day when I was out driving with my dad I was so curious to see what were in all these buildings. I remember waking up early to see the old arena and Ogilvie flour mill implosion, watching the Manitoba Cold Storage building slowly burning for several days. I wish I could have explored these buildings in person before these time capsules were wrecked by vandalism.
I found a great substitute with Curious George's website "Forgotten Architecture: Preservation Through Exploration". It was a glimpse into what these buildings looked like in the past. I read through all his journals, checking back almost every day to see if there was an update.
I went with a good friend of mine tonight for one of our first explorations. The only location we really knew of was the pit of death so we went to check it out. I think we ended up spending a couple hours there, going up both back stairwells to the top, through all the rooms, a quick in and out where they park there trucks. The only thing we couldnt figure out was how to get to the ground level area where the trucks would dump the garbage into the pit.

Hello stranger.
CGs website was how I found out about this hobby. Before that, to me, it was "hey guys I got some flashlights lets go check out this place"
Then I found out about UE, and this website.
I've had my eyes on the Pit O Death building, taken some outside photos. I've had friends of mine go there, but I still haven't had a chance to get in myself.
We've lost some real gems in this city. The saddest I had to watch was the slow degeneration of the Union Stock Yards powerhouse, once the main door was ripped open. Over time we'd make some visits, and you'd find more and more had been stripped out for scrap, and everything else just wrecked to shit.
Some of my favorite albums are completely random, terrible photos of just myself and my friends having a blast.
I miss being younger. Having just got a license and being eager to explore. To hell with the consequences.
Does any of the old crew still get out on a regular basis? I'd love to see how you're all doing.

I've heard lots about the stock yards, missed out big on that one too. Going through all the great buildings I can think of its really amazing just how many we have lost.
What I loved about the pit of death was it was one of the few industrial buildings left. Not much to explore there, but seeing the big claw hanging there in the dark, or walking through the furnace room, it just had a really cool feel to it
