Gettin' my kicks on old Route 66, between Tulsa and Oklahoma City.

The Mother Road meets Mother Nature.

The highway bridge and green sign in the distance are Interstate 44, the road that turned US 66 into a footnote.

A metal barn slowly melts in the Oklahoma sun.

Inside the barn are a few round bales of hay, and a bazillion doodlebug holes.

An abandoned wellhouse blossoms nearby.

Story Part II greatly anticipated.

Edit: Just saw that the ratings system has been removed. Have to say I agree -- I never really felt qualified to judge, anyway.

I was disappointed when they removed the rating system myself. After all, I AM lord and master of all I survey...

Seriously though, when glancing through a long list of sites, it did kinda give you a ballpark idea which locations are the premier ones in an area/region. For that alone, I found it useful.

Not that I'm planning on heading down there anytime soon, but I'm pretty sure your location marker is not accurate.

Awesome. I don't think I'd have had the guts to park my car at a random location on the other side of the Rio Grande, and walk down a path towards the best lookout point for miles. I would have wanted a local guide, at the very least... you should have paid those kids to help you out. Dollars to donuts (pesos to pinatas?) they'd have known exactly where you were talking about.

First of all, I have to say that was an amazing post and story. It's been so long since I went on a road trip and explored, that I was actually starting to feel a mild depression, like something lacking. Your write up of the story was amazing... I felt like I was there. If I could read things like this on UER everyday, I think I'd be ok until my next road trip. (Whenever that may be.)

I have to ask you though, were you not terrified about what you were doing? Don't get me wrong, I probably would have went for it too.. maybe.. but I would be scared and nervous a bit I think.

The first thing that came to mind when I read your story about it, I thought of this:

http://news.yahoo...._missing_americans

Then I remembered that you posted it, so that meant ya'll made it out okay, then I think my breathing continued at a normal rate.

I know not everyone has one, but I don't think I would have just tried to wing it on finding my way to the location. After I saw the house, I woulda looked it up on Google Maps, marked it, copped the coordinates and plugged them into my GPS. Or now, I might have just used my G1's GPS & Google Maps to get there.

I state this by the way not as an indictment of Allva at all; I state this as a recommendation to the folks who have seen his post & story and said, "wow, I wanna go check that place out".

Well, it's been done before. Though not with a happy ending. From the story of the Black Bean Death Lottery (see previous pix):

For several days, the escapees headed northeast on the main roadway, scavenging from small ranches and relying on their fighting prowess to carry them home. Then, in spite of Cameron's protests, the Texans abandoned the road and were soon adrift in the trackless desert.
Wandering across the arid wastes, the exhausted escapees tossed away their weapons as they were driven by hunger and thirst to forage for insects and snakes and to burrow for water in the parched earth. Some of the men desperately shoveled moist dirt into their mouths, while others, maddened by their thirst, stooped to drinking their own urine. The bulk of the prisoners scattered across the barren valleys, where their Mexican antagonists were patiently waiting, and by February 25, all but roughly a dozen of Cameron's men had been recaptured.

Texas history -- nothing if not colorful!

I have to admit that I was pretty terrified when we entered someone's property. At the same time it was a fun, healthy fear, full of adrenaline and butt willies...There are some things we should have done differently, BUT(and it's a huge BUT) it was sooo much fun that most of my fears pretty much vanished as soon as we saw the house. Thank you all for positive responses. Your enjoyment is what makes my trip worthwhile. Thank you for letting me share the experience with you.

I bet they used to grow pot in that house and got busted. I just watched a documentary about all these huge houses purchased in Mexico just over the border with no roads to them, not easily accessible that they use to grow 8 foot marijuana plants.
