House on the Border - Part 3

Yes..It was the house. To say that we were happy would be an understatement. After hours of stumbling around in the hot, dusty desert finding that house was like finding an oasis. About 500 feet from the front door we made a gruesome discovery. Square hole, about 4X4 feet and about 6 feet deep. It was filled with bones...animal bones? human bones? Probably some unfortunate cow? Phalanx immediately expressed desire to climb inside and it took all my powers of persuasion to talk him out of it.

One pile of bones per day is usually my limit, so with that we quickly proceeded towards the house.
Quickly.
Finally we were standing face to face with our destination. It was a large two story house that has seen better times. Broken windows stared at us like hollow eye sockets. Walls had entire sections ripped out like they were made from cardboard. Once inside we wandered around followed by the sound of the wind whistling some ancient song. This place was built and then deserted. At one time it was somebody's dream and now it was a hulking ruin stranded forever in the middle of unforgiving land.
The interior had a lot of damage. Floor boards had huge holes in them,
stairs to the second floorswayed beneath our feet and roof gave us plenty of glimpes of blue, summer sky.
One thing was certain...this place was no movie set. This house was built as a permanent dwelling. Cracked walls still had insulation and electrical wiring. Just about every room had a working fire place...This house was built for comfort with a special attention paid to the view of the river.
Large concrete slab on the other side of the house was to be a patio for evening barbecues, entertaing guests or just enjoying the setting sun...As I was looking through the viewfinder of my camera, I was trying to find any remnants of the people who lived here...Who were they? Why did they leave? That day we found no answers ...but I did not care. I just kept shooting....
At that moment this was the place where I wanted to be...
