I am not in a high risk category either. I’m more likely to be asymptomatic or close to it, but I have a responsibility to my community - not just to myself.
In other words, if I catch the virus, I’ll probably be fine, but it’s reckless and selfish of me to not see how my carelessness could harm, or even kill, the more vulnerable members of my community.

Even if you are in a low risk group, please follow the CDC and WHO guidelines and don’t take unnecessary chances that could endanger the lives of the people I love and care about.

Well said Dee, well said...

Nothing is for sure with a pathogen.
It has killed young healthy people.
If it gets going like the Spanish flu pandemic, it should be treated as we treat the common flu; no quarantine.
At some point as the numbers of infected rise quarantining will become pointless.

Those most vulnerable need to be quarantined from the general population.
The inverse of that in a bad pandemic will quickly become unworkable.
Expect at least 10% of those infected to break quarantine... no joke.
Even 1% would skew the quarantine plan to hell.

I believe it's far too contagious and robust to keep in check now.
Had China not been so slovenly it probably could have been contained... too late.

We've got a comparatively low number of confirmed cases compared to mainland Europe, which I believe is one of the reasons why Trump hasn't included the UK or Ireland in the current travel bans however as with everywhere the number of 'real' cases is likely to be many orders of magnitude higher than the 'official' cases. Our official number of cases is just below 500 right now, rising by about 120 a day, with 10 deaths (all elderly with underlying health issues), it's obviously set to rise quite dramatically in the next couple of weeks.

The UK government has taken the stance of 'slow and steady' when it comes to their preventative measures, they know they can't contain it but it's a matter of pushing back the peak of the cases to a time when the NHS is better suited to deal with them as regular seasonal flu cases will begin to drop dramatically right about now. They've advised anyone with a persistent cough and fever within the next couple of weeks to isolate themselves from everyone, people have been concerned saying they aren't doing enough but the trouble is you put in measures too fast and too soon - like closing schools - and it 1) doesn't get rid of it effectively as cases spike when the restrictions are removed and 2) people get fed up of it and are more likely to push back.

Thanks for the update. There will always be those who criticize government for not doing enough, or doing too much. There was a line in Men In Black something to the effect that "Individuals are smart. People are stupid." In a lot of ways, that's true right now. Hopefully the politicians won't use this as an "opportunity" (although some already are) and people will follow the expert's advice.

It's my nature to be a bit skeptical. I don't like to be a sheet, but this has the potential to be a real human tragedy. Hopefully it won't parallel with Spanish Flu of 1918 in reach or mortality.

Abby

I don't understand why people are hoarding toilet paper. This isn't an outbreak of dysentery.

I am having fun with the hysteria by creating bad memes.

Wouldn't the presence of Cornovirus also be a way to get into abandoned buildings much easier due to less people being on the streets?
Or so I would assume.
IF you are willing to take the risk that is.

I swear I'm so sick of all this mass panic about caronavirus lol. The flu killed over 20,000 people In the US this year so far lol. Nobody panic shopped, or shut down gatherings for flu season. So far Coronavirus has only killed 5000ish world wide... The real conspiracy here is what is this a distraction from.

I legit probably have already contracted Coronavirus. There's been a confirmed case at my trade school, and two of my coworkers were at the Houston Rodeo before it shut down. My small town just had it's first confirmed case. My wife's dad just got back from Saudi days before the travel shut downs.

And that's not to say it's not something to worry about for older members of the community like others have pointed out, but it's no different than the flu.
Wash your hands and carry on... might as well shut down travel, gatherings and stock your bomb shelter every damn year otherwise.

Looking forward to my 2 weeks off work and the sniffles.

Maybe haha. The city here is already pretty much a ghost town at this point.
Hell, even Walmart and those other stores are all empty.

This is one of the strangest weeks I've ever had so far. I'm not as panicked of Corona as everyone else is. Which is by no means a good thing...

well with this many pages to this thread, I can stop thinking this site isnt alive !

I think, maybe the flu kills more per year, but the COV is only been here 2 months, and the death toll seems to start increasing exponentially.

The bigger concern, at least for me, is the economic disaster thats happening and could keep going as they try and figure this all out. I know for a fact that if I got it I would be fine, and the same for the majority of people. However, government decides for us. I work for a smaller company so there is a possibility I could at least be laid off because business has taken a total shit. I am scared, i know ill be ok but its quite the shake up. But yeah, its pretty convenient that shit hit the fan a few days after Super Tuesday...

The reason people are a bit worried about COVID-19 is that unlike the seasonal Flu, which is relatively predictable and there is an annual vaccine for, COVID-19 is neither predictable nor is there a vaccine, there won't be a viable vaccine for at least another year.

For the vast majority of people it will be a minor illness and inconvenience were they to get it, but it's a serious issue for those at most risk of other flu-like viruses.

I'm supposed to be flying out to the States next week, luckily the UK wasn't on Trump's travel ban list but I'm not taking anything for granted in the run up to the day I'm supposed to be flying out there.

Exactly. But that economic disaster is because of the panic. Shutting down transportation and shipments is due to fear. We don't close ourselves off to imports during flu season, we shouldn't be closing our self off for this...

Disease is a part of the natural way of life. There is no way to absolutely defend against it. A vaccine will probably be developed and that will help, but in the meantime, all the paranoia and fear and attempts at isolating the spread is ultimately far more damaging than the virus itself. This isn't even a "bad" one. It's highly transmittable, but it's not Ebola...

But I guess my stance is entirely based off of using the flu as a constant for what is "normal." The flu is bad. But it's normal. If you aren't afraid to live in a world with the flu then you shouldn't be afraid to live in a world with COVID-19

Regardless, the majority will do what they want. If they wanna panic, they will. Our government will take action and we are all fucked. There isnt really any debate over it. The flu has been around forever, we know what to do about it. I dont agree with the majority but i cant change a thing about it.

All K-12 Schools in Oregon Closed! Yeah I think shit's getting real. Perhaps real within this simulation that is. Outside the simulation it may all just be a joke. But I am pretty sure I am within the simulation and not on the outside so therefore can not tell what is real and what is not.
