| | | It was my understanding that NinjaKlutz was compelled to leave the forums out of respect for the physical spaces themselves. He was particularly concerned with who to trust with locations. He had a very justifiable feeling of responsibility over protecting these spaces and keeping them safe. Secondly, though, and more significantly...he always made sure to be careful with the information & imagery he shared online. He's worked a lot with A.Lien, TacDiCal and myself. The research range of this guy is well into the 100's of hours. It was his passion, his devotion. He was committed to not posting about certain spots because they were so rare/significant. As opposed to letting his eager excited self drop tidbits which could lead to a spot getting burned off the jump. Even so he expressed to me he was troubled with frustration over people using the forums like a tourist map. Once the TC reported on a tunnel he was investigating and they weren't exactly vague. In his words "So many locations we cherish have been subject to outright destruction due to unnecessary publicity." This is the internet and whatever gets posted, gets posted. We've all posted things in the early days which didn't seem like a big deal at the time, but in retrospect these morsels brought unnecessary heat on the location. He also grew concerned with the increase of accessibility to information about Victoria's underground. Victoria is very unique, with regards to it's subterranean infrastructure. It is a treasure of sorts, with a highly rich history that has few parallels anywhere else. But it is a highly sensitive heritage: being a small city, there aren't that many tunnels, and access points are at high risk of increased surveillance and even destruction. Our subterranean playground is LIMITED and shrinking be it by gravel poured in by bulldozers or perfect street lids being sealed. None of this HAS to be posted. None of this HAS to be public. It was my and NK's belief that the forums should be where the myth is discussed, where we trade ideas around and communicate en mass. Not the dickslinging photo debut it has become. It was supposed to be about the tease (the single photo of an undisclosed location accompanied by a riveting writeup about the adventure to get there). I don't want to sound condescending or angry here. I feel that as an explorer in Victoria's UE community it's kind of my responsibility (as it may be yours) to relay caution to others about disseminating information that could compromise the integrity of our city's incredible subterranean infrastructure, and the interests of other explores. We all share in this heritage together, so please, please think twice about the consequences of your actions, both online and in the streets. I have a lot of love for the new explorers / newcomers in Victoria. But understand our concern that it has been made too easy for people to access sites without having to do the extensive research that we did when we discovered these places for ourselves. That's what it should be for everyone DISCOVERY for yourself which bestows you with a sense of parental protection for these locations. For me, with every picture I see of said underground space before I get there comes the diminished wonder and adventure in my personal discovery. For the reasons mentioned above, I've also taken a backseat to the forums. Essentially once I realized that my forum additions took away from the community more than they gave. For those of you doing the in-person meet ups/pouring over maps. You're doing it right. This public forum internet stuff is just for fun, you don't necessarily have make it a show & tell. Leave us salivating with imagination. ;)

| | | Good vibes and advice on here lately. Thinking of you recently J.P. NinjaKlutz is an amazing dude. A brilliant artist, dedicated researcher and explorer, he will go far. Although he entered the scene after the peak years of explorations of the GCG's (Garden City Gardeners) he took drain research and lid popping to a new low And that's saying something, given J.P.'s and Tanuki's legendary efforts. Many of which still have not been found. Would have liked to have explored with NK. We did though have some great scouting walks and talks. I kind of wanted to tell him about a certain location access, he was truly obsessed with it; but one doesn't break a pact of silence. And it would be 1000 times better if and when he figured it out on his own. Yes on the less is more disclosure on here. It's really a personal or small group where things are most enjoyable imo. This forum has been awesome, great the old spirit seems to be reviving. Newer explorers are doing great. The Janion before renos started was what is was, and it was: Antique fire buckets of awesome and those mini suites will be fun to check out. If anyone talks to NinjaKlutz, say hi from me. We'll catch up sometime. I didn't know how to deal with his difficulty deciding to stay or go on this forum. So decided to back off the 'friendly advice' knowing he'd figure it out on his own. Some amazing memories; The rush to get in and close the lid. Slithering out of that half full drain and hour or so later, boots filled with water and toxic sludge, ripping pants on the barb wire fence, raccoons, cones, laughing at our success, soggy dogs, return by Rabbit. Everyone happy and stoked on the adventure. Cheers, A.

| | | I couldn't sleep this morning so I decided to take a walk downtown, and admire the city buildings when I came across some city workers on a certain street that Brandon250, J-Vic, and I have been discussing for a while now. These City workers were doing general maintenance down a BCEO manhole. The guys were nice enough to put up with me, and to let me take some pictures, and a video. I asked them what the purpose of this BCEO manhole. They stated this corner was for electrical, and this tunnel doesn't go very far for that matter. I'm not sure if that was the whole truth, or not as for I know the street very well. Inside look pretty huge, there were 2 guys standing with no problem and moving around with a yellow tube coming from there truck. I'm not sure what the purpose of the tube was for, I should of asked. - Artemis

| Without having seen your yellow tube, I'm going to throw a guess out there and say that it might have been used to pump oxygen down into the tunnel. Recently, I saw some workers here in Seattle at a manhole, and they had a large tube at the opening, pointed in. I asked about it and they said they use it to make sure there is enough good air inside "in case we have to go in."

| | | , Posted by HackTheRipper Shit, that seounds crazy. Also, I haven't heard anything about a tunnel in Beacon Hill. Is cavit a storm drain or something else?
| Looked like a cemented up cave.In 2006/7 I dug under the plug for approx. 5 metres,'til I reached what seemed to be two (small?) chambers, filled with old trash, and bottles. I found a full carling stubbie, that had no metric on it. That would put it pre-1972. I did a fair bit of poking around at the city archives, and the library, and haven't seen any mention of a cave, or excavation, at that location.

| | | I was the only squatter for winters 2005/6/7. There were many old offices filled with mouldering, rufous filing cabinets, and, at the end of a long hallway A disturbing room containing nothing but an antique toilet, sitting on a kind of dais, or platform, approx. 20cm high. The only other thing in there was a big ol' shower head. Musta been some kind of masonic party room. As I said, an uninvited guest got wind, and left a bunch of lighted dollar-store tea-candles strewn around, on top of piles of old lathing. When I rode up to my front door, admiring the volume of smoke pouring outta the hotel a couple of blocks away, I found the city already pouring a slab over the entry point. BTW Anyone else think that the metal hatch to the Empress looks like someone didn't want to be behind it?

| RevBeel sorry about your retreat being burned, it is a shame. I have spent a large part of the day searching throughout Beacon Hill Park, unfortunately I have yet to find the location, at this point at least. I was wondering if the Beacon Hill cave seemed to be man-made or naturally formed? I understand the top part was cemented over and you dug beneath it. Once you got into the cave what was it made of dirt, bedrock, cement, bricks etc.? This is quite intriguing, thank you for posting about the Beacon Hill cave and your experiences in the Empress tunnel.
