Interesting thought. I've never heard the words 'stormwater' and 'rehab' in the same sentence before. On suspension bridges deep heavy caissons are needed to anchor the cables. On this type of bridge, maybe some kind of anchor is needed, likely not as skookum though. Or it has nothing to do with the bridge, as you suggest. If still open, should be fairly easy to check out.

Well this thread sure died off again...

Anyone find anything lately? Anyone looking for anything?

Brandon250 and I have kind of hit a dead end on a few systems we were trying to find. Hopefully we have a break through soon!

Sorry, this isn't much of a first post for such a venerable thread, but here it goes...

I spotted this across the street from where those two red arches posted earlier in this thread were, I'd guess about 4-5m below current street level. Not much there anymore I imagine, but something was. Anyone know anything more?

Here's a bizarre story, one which i shall be eagerly investigating. My friend Mathias Weedhead was out around the mount Tolmie area. He was somewhat high on several substances, but DEFINITELY NOT anything hard or hallucinatory. He knows his drugs very well, and he knows that what happened was very real. He and a friend walked into a low lying wooded area, and by sheer fluke luck, saw a tunnel entrance. Just there, open, right in front of them. Like a door going into the rock/hill. They walked in. Apparently it was like the Burrow of the Beast in shape, but it was a tunnel--no trace of water. And they went along walking through there for a good half-hour before turning around and walking back because they were tired.
Mathias knew i've been trying to get in the storm drains, so he asked me if i recognized this tunnel. I looked at him as if he were Dumbo.
The one problem here is that my friend was walking around a LOT that day, and wasn't sure just quite where that low-lying wooded area was (and NOT bowker creek!); but he figures it was near Mount Tolmie. Now that he's not on weed, he really wants to get back in, and i'm dying of curiosity. So we will be scouring the area, searching....searching......
Damn. This is the last thing i need. There's too much stuff to investigate/explore in Victoria!!!Gaaahhhhhhhhhrgljsdfjgdijisdsefdeeeaaatttthhhhhh

Last winter I started looking for this location, unfortunately it was too shitty out to stomp around in the wet cold bush.. So I decided to put this story on the back burner.

I may start flirting with trying to locate this place once again now that it's summer...whenever I get some free time.

Cheers

So something pretty interesting happened last night!
Brandon250, Hacktheripper, htp123 and i decided to go check out the beast again. About 20 feet in i noticed a brick missing from the top. I shined my light up into it and noticed there was a big open space with the ceiling at least 8 feet from the top of the beast. Instantly i was very curious as to what this was. So i stuck my hand up into it to try and get a few pictures and this is what i saw.

1.

2.

So now i am completely lost as to what this could be. Obviously some sort of tunnel that is running on top of and parallel to the beast. But why and what would it have been for?

Time to do some research and exploring to see if we cant get into it.

Curious now if anyone knew about this or has any idea why its there or what its for?

(Thanks for the fantastic trip!)

A little titbit to add to the above: the opening was partially covered by a piece of wood initially, and when I tried to move it to make room for our cameras, it fell apart like dust.

I don't know anything about how wood decays there, but I'm guessing it wasn't put there recently.

These are some beautiful shots J, I was talking to Brandon about what this tunnel could of possibly been used for. I know someone that use to work at a very well known hotel that is near the Parliament building during the early 80's.

He told me a year ago that him and his buddy took a walk through 1 off the basements escape routes which had led them to Beacon Hill Park.

I wonder if this could be a similar situation... That's my 2 cents.

Sorry for the off-topic post, this is neither a secret nor a tunnel, but I think it isn't well known and it is under the garden city and so seems to fit with the general theme of this thread.

If you check current municipal maps of railroads in Victoria, you'll notice that there are abandoned rail lines indicated all over the place; up Hillside, down Government, through Fernwood and Fairfield. I confirmed with a city worker that the reason they are still on the maps is because some of them are still under the roads. When Victoria converted from rails to roads, most of the rails were simply filled in and paved over. They are still occasionally dug up during road work.

As luck would have it, that seems to have just happened. Excuse the poor picture, hard to stop there during the day with all the traffic.

I'm guessing the concrete section underneath it is because the whole place was actually over the water (note the harbour just south of 'FREIGHT SHED') and so probably build on stilts before the whole area was eventually filled in.

There is also a very inviting little hatch, that seems to possibly have actually been below current street level. Anyone know if this connects to what I think it does?

From the draining maps that I have been studying for hours online, we were under the impression that this storm drain would of been larger than the rest of the storm drains due to the fact that it was highlighted very brightly compared the standard colour chosen for the drains which were in a darker green and classified under the same category.

It means that they were lined: http://www.uer.ca/...rrpage=2&pp#post31

The original drain will be marked separately on the map, with a thicker highlight covering the parts of it that were recently rehabilitated by lining them in that new composite stuff.

The "host pipe" will generally be vitrified clay or brick and only a little larger.

Please excuse the cross posting, but I doubt many people actually read the drain thread.

If anyone wants to watch "Lost Rivers", a documentary about underground rivers with lots of drain porn (check the trailer), come to the Hall of Wonders this Saturday night.

Interesting, Your first pic looks like something similar that I took which I sent to Brandon250 a few months ago. Gj!!!

I know this is off topic, but....There is a sk8te park that I blasted on as a kid... Near it there are some heritage Rail-Road buildings in which were used in the early years of Victoria...

I've been in there before in 2004''.. These days I drive past them, the doors look pretty loose ;D ;D ..

I've been digging.

I'll keep it short. I enjoyed the mystery and would like others to have the same chance.

Thanks to everyone that's helped me, directly or indirectly, especially J-VIC and brandon and the crew that originally found this.

Sorry for the gratuitous pictures, but this place is awesome and I thought it deserves a few high(er) res shots on here.

That was truly an amazing adventure! I couldn't of asked for a better team on finding this (Brandon250 and Htp123).

Htp123 you are one hell of a researcher/explorer and it wouldnt of been possible without your hard work and dedication.

Finally the months of work we put into finding and planning this payed off and we got to see this masterpiece first hand.
