I went to visit my family for Thanksgiving and got to see Galveston for the first time since Ike.
I was pretty sad. The apartments I lived in as a teenager were completely gone. There was a cool building that was still there that shared a driveway with the apts I lived in. It was always something I wanted to go into as a teenager, but it was inhabited. I think it was a really fancy apartment building. At least, that's how I remember it... like a quadplex or something. Now there was a way in.. a very open way in, but it seems the neighborhood has changed drastically since I lived there (It was nothing but retired older people with older but houses that were kept up very well.) and it made me feel really old to see that it's just a ghetto now with boarded up houses and crack heads throwing a football in the street. I had the family with me. 4 kids and a husband... and I didn't think they wanted to wait on me while I explored the place. But yea, was sad to see the apartments gone. I actually had trouble sleeping that night. So has anyone explored any of the stuff off Bayou Shore Dr? It's just past 61st st. heading West. Was curious if maybe the apartments stood vacant before Ike, or if Ike took them out.
So The Strand was eerily quiet for a Friday night... but we found some cool stuff to look at in the store front windows.
