Typically I do like to park in parking lots of schools, businesses etc...
But if need be, I have no problem with parking in front of someones house.
Rarely ever though, do I park in front of where I'm gonna be around.

The other guy with me held it up as I went under. However another time I didn't even see the little chain in front of a place and drive right through it without a scratch.

I like to park right on site. I try to be be very blatant & test the waters. Get out, start snap'n pix of the exterior. All the while I'm scoping the scene & look'n for my entrance. It has a about a 75% success rate.

Personally, if I'm going to do something downtown, I park my car at one of the like three public parking ramps (cheap too, $.50 an hour) and walk the rest of the way. In suburbs or when it's too far to walk from a ramp or park'n'ride, simply try to park on the street near some other cars, as to not draw attention to myself. In between two houses on a street is really inconspicuous, and in a metered parking spot is perfect.
In rural locations, however, that can be tricky. Try to park about half a mile away from the abandonment. I've used the "out of gas, will return in morning" trick under my wipers, and someone even left me a twenty dollar bill. I haven't tried asking someone near the place to let me park in their driveway, but being seventeen I doubt the 'real estate photog' line will work.
Also, it's worth pointing out that I have a 96 Mustang with a custom paint job, so if I can pull it off without drawing attention to myself anyone can.

I'v been doing alot of rural trips over the last few months.. Been just driving into the yard or near it.. I normally get permission and alot dont mind if i call ahead... If im not sure of the person/owners i'll just leave my car with a printed note that Im out with my dog for a walk... Which he has been coming with me and is very good at finding things.
I did go to Fort San with the gf and we took an hour... Im working on getting permission to explore the site for a few hours.. I did find a floor map in the admin office.

That sucks! If I must part in the city I will try to find a nice part of town, or find the closest store and park there.
How suspicious is just parking on the side of the highway? Can you get ticketed for that? What if you have a "for sale" sign in your window?

Do you mean a state highway, or an actual freeway? I know on freeways here you will not get a ticket right away, but the cops will stop, run the plate, and they will check back frequently to see if you've moved. If not they either will ticket you or tell you they will tow it if it's not removed in a certain period of time. I also think that on highways where there's lots of traffic, it would be pretty obvious if they see you walking into the woods or something.

For the abandoned hospital in Norwich, CT there is a commuter lot right next to the site. That's a good place to park and then you can just walk down the street. It's usually best to drive by a few times and scout the area.

Of course there would be NO excuse for parking inside if I had been caught, but I was pretty certain I wouldn't be seen/found. I have also parked nearly a mile away and walked through the woods in other situations. Totally your decision, use your head.
A GREAT trick someone taught me once was to pop the hood so it looks like your car broke down and you went to get help. Of course if it's a bad neighborhood someone might steal your car battery or fuck with your engine, but again, totally circumstantial. This just seemed like a pretty convincing prop and it's worked really well for me.

Shopping Centers
Restaurants
Make sure you don't leave any valuables in sight, lock your doors, and park next to a vehicle that is nicer/newer than yours. Or better yet park next to a parked cop car.
You might risk accidental damage (shopping cart, fender bender) but you should avoid most problems with theft or vandalism.
