In the few times I really did have a breakdown in BFE, every car just passed me by, even a Sheriff. Oh well, that's Murphy's Law for you.

Someday if I get really bored, I'll pull off in front of an abandonment, raise my hood and see how long I sit there before a soul stops.

Maybe I just look pathetic and in need of help?

Like many I usually park in an obvious place. I will also make a point to take pictures from the outside if there is a lot of activity around the place. I even have gone up to people (business owners next door) and let them know I am a property photog (dont laugh it works). However at one place that was overgrown and nowhere to really park near - I would 4x4 to the side of the place (prison) and hide it under a tree. I was there once and heard the rangers downstairs chewing out another group. I just exited and sat in my truck until I saw the guys leave. Never leave ANYTHING that even looks valuable in your car. They will break in to check a empty pack of smokes!

I find that's the best way to start too. Nobody has ever bothered me if they see me taking pictures of a place from a road. I've had cops watch me do that, walk up to "private property" labelled abandoned places and do nothing...half because I look like I'm just taking pictures and not making trouble, and the other half because I look innocent! To get to these places though, I park in public parking lots or residential streets usually behind where I'm trying to get to. Streets behind buildings let you check it out from the back first and get a look without traffic seeing you. Otherwise when fields are involved, park wherever possible, check for traffic, and run like heck!

"No thanks, I just pulled over to take a leak"; zip up your fly and then you go find another place to park.

Not so convincing when you're sitting in the driver's seat.

You know, with your fly down and everything.

We have gotten into the habit of taking someone with us who can drive the car elsewhere to entertain themselves for a while during our exploration trips. Saves the car problem all-together, esp. since most of the places we've visited lately have been right off majour roads around here.

I've always just found if you are in the country and mind your own business people will let you do your business and if your walking just smile and wave at the people that drive by. Why would random people bother someone who doesn't look suspicious... But then again maybe I live in BFE where you can get away with that.

I don't like what the fucks going on here

Some of the abandoned sites in Detroit are so popular, they actually have valet parking for UE'ers!

Like many other people said, I usually park a ways away, around other cars. I live in Chicago and generally am not exploring in the nicest neighborhoods. Generally a parking lot with a lot of cars, or a moderately busy road with lots of other cars on it. I don't like to walk to far, but sometimes will park up to a mile away if I can't find a nice spot.

It depends, if the site is in the city, i would mind, but if its in the woods, or in the back country, parking at the site means less walking.

Id say if there are chances of getting caught, you should park away from the site

I hitch a ride with people I explore with and it all depends on where we go. If it's in a quiet neighborhood, we usually park pretty close to the location. And if it's a bit sketchy, we park in a parking lot with other cars.

Can't say I've ever tried that one. Like most everyone else, I just try to park somewhere where it'll blend in. Walking a few blocks is preferable to attracting attention. In neighborhoods, I just park on the street, trying to keep it in between houses so whoever looks out the window will assume it's a visitor of a neighbor.

My old car was a piece of shit, old '85 Toyota Tercel hatchback, so if I was in a rural area I could pretty much just park it and forget it and people would assume it's abandoned. Now I have a beastly off-road-mobile, so if I'm somewhere really rural where no matter where I park it'll be out of place, I try to hide it behind or inside of the building itself.

edit: Also I'd advise against trying that. If someone lives next to an abandoned building, they're probably used to seeing punk-ass kids in there breaking, stealing, and spray-painting. If they know you're in there, odds are they'll call the cops. Of course, there's always the chance they'll appreciate your honesty and let you without a hitch, but that's probably the exception rather than the rule.

When I was in Ohio, to Visit the Old abandoned Admusement Park I had to ask one of the cottage people to use there parking space because it was my first adventure on my own and 2nd to access this place there were towing signs everywhere expect for the small cottages on the outside of the park, I explained to the neighbour that I was an explorer looking to take pics and that I was visiting from Canada and they saw my camera at the time. They said if anyone asks just say you a news paper person from Canada doing a story on it. I said a big thank you to the person and then left to go inside the park. I think most people are really nice and will allow you to do it if you you explain ur situation and I mean your not there to cause trouble.

I don't know if anyone has tried it in the past but it sure worked for me!

I am a big proponent of this train of thought. In rural areas especially it can be very difficult to find decent places to park and not arouse suspicion. Bring a cell phone, and set up a time for pickup with your driver.

Another suggestion I would throw out is to use a bike. Easy to hide, low-profile, and if you have a good mountain bike you can traverse fields, woods, and use the less traveled routes to access places you maybe could not otherwise.

I make it a point to NEVER leave anything exposed in my car, including stereo faceplate, cds, tapes, cigs, shopping bags, and like to believe that helps.

Parking in residential areas is best, and a little walking never hurts! Time of day is also important to consider as a factor as well. Police and people are far more suspicious of strangely parked cars at night than in the daytime, unless you are drawing attention to yourself. In most neighborhoods no one will notice.

Now if I could only get a nice jetpack, I think I would be all set! Anyone have a good used one they don't need?

I just park where ever is good. Today I parked next to security... whatever. I just judge each place differently. If it is in the country I just pull off to the side of the road a little ways down the road. I have yet to run into issues.
