Parking at Abandonded Sites?

Hey,

This is my 3rd day on here since waiting the 7 days before I could post. I have a question that I did not see on the rookie forums. When going exploring at abandoned sites, do you park in front of the abandoned site or do you park away from the site like another building/restaurant? Do you try to hide you car in bush or under trees so Cops/Security don't see your car? Do some of you walk to your locations?

Thanks

We had a thread on this somewhere, but I can't find it... Basically, we have some people to do, but the rest are split on whether to park a block away or a mile away.... I tend to park about a mile away, I don't mind the hike and security can always just wait at the car for you to show up (or run plates...)

I wouldn't hide it under branches, just hide it in plain site. Often a larger concern is people f*cking with your car, especially in urban areas.

My vehicle being at / near a site has been an issue to me twice. I've learned from this, and generally avoid having it anywhere near the location. Find a place to park where it blends in with other vehicles and revert to the Mk 1 Foot.

But parking at other locations like restaurants and other stuff for more then an hour won't the owners wonder?

Depends on the size of the lot, and the turnover.

Less so than the cops coming across a car on property where no one should be. First find a legal spot. If that doesn't work, find a barely legal spot. If that doesn't work and you still dare to stick around, settle for an illegal spot knowing it could cost you a few hundred $$$ to get it back if it gets towed.

Naturally, in all of this balance the need for a legal spot with the requirement of security for your vehicle.

I get pretty paranoid about where I park my car. I always make sure to park a distance and right by other cars so it's not obvious that there is someone in the abandoned building.

Good Places:

Schools
Churches
Ball-fields
Boys and Girls Clubs (Geoff5093 and TheRequ13m would agree sometimes these are the only safe places to park ones vehicle in a bad neighborhood)
YMCA's and Youth Centers
Upscale Condo Complexes
Cul-de-sacs (but don't park against traffic even if it is a dead end!)
Housing Developments
Parking Garages
Shopping Centers
Restaurants

Make sure you don't leave any valuables in sight, lock your doors, and park next to a vehicle that is nicer/newer than yours. Or better yet park next to a parked cop car.

You might risk accidental damage (shopping cart, fender bender) but you should avoid most problems with theft or vandalism.

Some people park to damned far away, and it's a dead giveaway if you get caught walking through certain areas of woods, or down roads with nothing else on them. Either way, the further you are away, the longer it takes to walk, which means the more time you have to be caught. I've found it to be useful to park as close as possible. Sometimes I park right in front of or next to a place I'm exploring.

Police do not always automatically assume that a car in a parking lot is from people breaking into buildings. Sometimes it's a place people walk in the woods, go hunting(check seasons), or meet up to carpool(weekdays). It all comes down to logic. If you can park in the front parking lot, and there's a part that can't be seen from the street, park there. The closer to the street, the less likely that you're there for the building. If there's a well beaten path to the side or across the street where people seem to walk, fish, or hunt, park near there.

Things that do make you obvious, is when you park way out back where no one would ever want to or need to go. If it looks like you're hiding, police will assume that you are.

Examples: Last weekend I parked at a prison. A couple weeks ago, I saw people at an abandoned hospital parking on the side of a back road and walking their dogs. I parked next to them. I've also parked across the street from a couple places.

A little more ballsy, at the front entrance to a place I saw plenty of slack in the chain, drove under it, and parked where no one would see me. There's no excuse for it if you get caught, but I made myself so obvious, that I assumed no one would think I was up to something bad. On the way out a cop saw me as I was driving under the chain. No idea what he thought, because he never stopped.

i keep waiting for the cops to call me and ask why i was at a location (they did call my house because my husband had been seen going up to a closed location (safety camp for kids) he spoke to the security guard on site). but i guess the security guard got scared or something and reported it to the cops. I know cops in our town dont have alot to do, cause they pulled my husband over 3 times within first few months of us moving in. They just wanted to find out who he was. So them calling around when it is cold out side so they dont have to pull people over

But i figure i am so far , not breaking into any place only taking pics from outside (except the first place that was wide open) so what are they going to charge me with? I park right where it is safe and convenient.

I only park at abandoned sites if there are other cars parked there. Like some hospitals have sections that are still active, so there are a ton of cars parked there. If not, then i park up the street and walk. Its legal to walk down streets. Ive never had any problems with that before.

When i used to go to Skillman, i used to park on a side street off Skillman Road and cut across the field. Its legal to park on the side of the street. Then you just walk into the place.

It depends, as many other people have said if there is an active parking lot either at or right next to the site I'm visiting I would park there. I don't mind walking and I'd rather have to walk a ways then find out that the cops are waiting by my car. Luckily around here I don't have to worry as much about theft or vandalism, but if I go to a not so good part of town I will try to find an active parking lot with lots of traffic.

No matter what you do with your vehicle, you don't want it to look suspiciously out of place. I think some of the safest places are on a busy city street with other cars or a Walmart or big mall lot.

Be careful of smaller strip mall lots or those of a place like Dennys or some other single-use tenant. You'll be spotted easier and maybe towed.

Watch out too for rural farmroads. In many areas, it will attract the sheriff if they see a car parked along a desolate road.

If you're brazen, then drive onto the site an hide the car from the road. I explored a farm once and drive right into the barn and shut the door.

When locations are close to home, walk or bike. The only problem with this is you may find yourself needing a quick getaway, but if you are good at hiding, then no problem.

Another option is have someone drop you off and arrange to pick you up after a certain time or keep in touch with a cellphone.

See,I thought that too, until we got stuck in the driveway of a farmhouse we explored. The car was jam packed in snow,we were there for quite a while and not one person who passed by stopped to help or see what were up to.

My experiences have led me to do the exact opposite. I always look for somewhere completely non-suspicious to park, like a fast food restaurant or hotel or school, and often park quite a long way away if necessary. Based on the exploring I've done and the other explorers I've talked to, being lazy and parking too close seems to me to be absolutely the most common way that people get caught. Sure, the car alone might not cause that much suspicion (this depends a LOT on the time of day/night, the location and just HOW close you park to the entrance), but if there is anything else to cause suspicion, your car being parked outside will cause cops or anyone else to immediately go from being just slightly suspicious that there might be someone in the building, to being almost certain. I've never had any issue with walking a long way to an abandonment; there are tons of reasons that people walk down the side of the road in absolutely any area, and once you get off the road and into the "suspicious" area, you are often either not visible from the road anymore, or beyond the closest parking anyway.

There is a large, well-known local abandonment where I live that has a cul-de-sac right outside of it where trespassers ALWAYS go and park. Wal-Mart security guards keep an eye on this cul-de-sac, and the moment they see someone park in there, they call the cops. People get caught there ALL the time. I've been into that same abandonment a million times and never been caught or had the cops called. I park about a quarter of a mile away and approach the building in a much less obvious way.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go..." -Dr. Suess

The only time I park near where I am exploring is if I have my motorcycle and there is a quick route to a freeway, that way when you're in need of a quick getaway with slim to no chance of getting caught there it is.
If I'm in my truck I park as close as I can get while still having it mingled in a host of other cars, so it just blends in.
My car never goes out during these activities, being 30 years old and 6 different colors, it just screams "give me attention".

In the few times I really did have a breakdown in BFE, every car just passed me by, even a Sheriff. Oh well, that's Murphy's Law for you.

Someday if I get really bored, I'll pull off in front of an abandonment, raise my hood and see how long I sit there before a soul stops.
