"Hi, Mr. Police, I'm just a photographer!"
"Can I look through your pictures?"
"Um... I... haven't taken any yet..."

This is why I keep exteriors on one card. If you run into folks (security, police, management, random people) outside, you can just be like "hey, look, pretty (and totally legal) pictures!"

last time I checked there wasn't a law against not taking a photo. Why give them any evidence at all? If you are caught on private property and they decide to arrest you and you have photos of the property you're arrested on, which look like they might have been taken from closer than the public street, you're screwed. They might even be justified in confiscating your equipment (the police that is, not security), but if you have no photos then the best they have you for is trespassing. If you're not acting like a dick you might even get away with a speech about not doing it again. I haven't done this in years (a lot of years) but I've never been arrested for it. Usually we got The Speech from a cop/security guard/plant worker, etc and we were escorted off the property. A blank memory card looks the same as one with photos that has been formatted, and can be recovered later.

To avoid being caught I snipe anyone that I see at (or near) the site beforehand. Saves me so much trouble.

Dress in dark clothes, carry a camera, and walk like you belong there. I rely on a handy SEP Field when wandering about in the open.

It's very simple, really-

1) pull a comfy chair in front of your computer
2) Log in to UER and/or your other favorite exploration websites
3) look at pretty pictures, allowing others to assume all the risks
4) comment how AWESOME #4 and #12 are.

Congrats! you are now an accomplished explorer, and if you have followed these steps precisely, you have also not been caught.

"I'm sorry sir, I'm not a crack head and I haven't done any vandalism you see I'm an artist (photographer) and I'm trying to capture a bit of the city's past for my next project, I meant no harm."

Which is the TRUTH.

If you get caught.

My Bag of tricks is to get in, open up an access route and get out with the tools and anything illegal then come back later, scout before, go with someone experienced who's done the site before whether they've been caught or not, depending they know either way not to do THAT again (whatever got them caught) or they know how not to get caught in the first place!

The BEST person to go with is a security guard ;) Muaha ha Someone who knows how security guards work anyway, the one I went with used to be a

Never go in with a bunch of noobs. One noob is great! ME!
But last night I was listening to a thankful partner in crime who was so happy that I didn't use flash and had the light pointed away from the street windows at all times, you know it kinda helps.

When you get caught you have to consider why they don't want you in there to begin with.

Unsafe, construction, you might damage the place, they're looking for squatters or crack heads. Having an expensive camera set up really shows hey, look, this guy has money and isn't here to do damage or get high.
Then I pull out the artist card, let them know I'm a photographer, and a local historian with a level, calm head on me and just apologize for the inconvenience you've cause the nice man in the uniform. A lot of them are easy to get to. "Did you know this was the first mall in Canada?"

Having a VERY clean criminal record helps.

I'm also trans gender, so I have both male and female ID just in case it goes that far!

Personally I favor the *hide in the duct* approach myself, yes until they get the dogs haha.

If you hear dogs barking, its better to get caught willingly than up in some duct.

If you are caught , face it and go willing. You don't want to scare a cop into shooting you and you don't want the dogs to find you. Going to jail is better than being caught by an attack dog please!

Just get out of your hiding spot when no one is looking and casually wander around and maybe even out if you are ninja enough but don't sneak,(Imagine you get into a situation where a cop catches a glimpse of you RUNNING, they'll run after you and tackle your ass) walk heavy when you hear footsteps because cops walk heavy and you won't be noticed as easily. Again just walk up to the cop and say hey sorry, I'll leave I'm just a local photographer. Meant no harm.

The WORST thing you could do is act shady, shifty or RUN.

The best thing is to look STUPID like huh? Oh, you guys are looking for me? I'm safe it's ok just wanted a few pics of this place!

Take home no treasure, have no claim to the photos yourself. Get fat, and lazy.

I'd rather climb walls like spider man, for me it's not just exploring it's challenge!

Yes actually.

A previous explorer left a really good glove behind lol, ok I know a glove. Yeah But.

Symbolic, I dont have gloves to climb with and I am a climber. So my first explore I was solo because I was opening the place from the roof for my partner. I crawled into this space and under it looked like a homeless person lived there 20 years ago and nothing since. There were children's toys and I found a shape sorter that was in mint condition. Mind you I have a two year old.

I also found a vintage vest in an abandoned mall and more than that some of the graffiti was amazing, I have picture of riddles written by people on acid or something because with a name like Lucifer and my history, if I don't get it...they're on acid ...lol

What do you do to not get caught?

Read this whole thread, then wander off in search of some fun place to explore and let common sense and my recollection of this fountain of knowledge protect me

...Read Access all areas in the dark with candles lit in a circle around you as if you are chanting some litany of invisibility. Read it from front to back in a monotone voice and you will be completely undetectable to anyone of 'authority' for 24 hours.

Edit for humor
