Read this whole thread, then wander off in search of some fun place to explore and let common sense and my recollection of this fountain of knowledge protect me 
...Read Access all areas in the dark with candles lit in a circle around you as if you are chanting some litany of invisibility. Read it from front to back in a monotone voice and you will be completely undetectable to anyone of 'authority' for 24 hours.

This might help for shooting photographs in a dark building at night, besides, people who will see or hear your flash from outside will be too damn scared to call the police!

A site with high visibility might be entered on the right day when the weather keeps people doing other things besides looking around at the dreary outside. Sunday is a good day to explore because many regular activities are not going on and people are at home drunk or hungover or sleeping.
Common sense should tell you to trust your gut most of the time. I have had a few trips planned which I cancelled because conditions were not totally right, but that will not always apply. I recently took shots of a very active location by merely approaching the workers and saying "Hi, I know the history of this fine building and would like to document it if its ok" and got to pretty much shoot what I liked on the outside with no problems. Dress for success!
Do you look like Travis Bickle and are in a high visibility area in the daytime poking around where the locals can see you? They might not understand your love of photography or the driving forces that compel you to stalk abandonments or industrial behemoths and get all up in them and stuff, so always look out for the locals!

If you are a pussy to pain and potential disfigurement though, it would be better just to be extra careful upon entering a building. Getting in and out, without being seen, is 90% of doing it right.
