It's a couple of Saturdays away, but we might want to consider nailing down a location. I ordered my $4 tickets for the 1:05 exhibition game against KC, so you may see me and the kids in left field, lower reserved, section 3.

Here's a place that just got mentioned in the Morning News that has a gimmick that might appeal to our cheapskate side:
Arlington cafe serves gourmet food and lets customers pay what they want

ARLINGTON – In a homey, light-filled space near the University of Texas at Arlington, a restaurateur has opened an unusual lunchroom that has no printed menus and no set prices.

At Potager, Cynthia Chippindale's 2-month-old restaurant on South Mesquite Street, patrons order what they'd like, eat the meal, and then pay what they think it was worth, discreetly placing cash in envelopes made from folded magazine pages.

The description in the article sounds a bit high-falutin' for our bunch, though, with "lace-curtained windows and brightly painted brick walls." Sounds like a place that someone would take her new husband to for a post-honeymoon meal.

So if that's too rich for our blood, the top options that are coming to mind close to the Ballpark are Al's Hamburgers (Collins and Green Oaks), and Colter's BBQ (Collins and Road to Six Flags). Al's has a couple of advantages -- it has real tables, so we can scoot 'em around (I think Colter's is all booths). Also, Colter's overlooks the massive spectacle of JerryWorld, where they tore down several perfectly good dilapidated apartments (one of which I lived in long ago) for their parking lots. That might be depressing and/or awesome, depending on your architectural tastes. Al's is also closer to an interesting outdoor exploration spot, if the weather's nice. I'm still keeping Colter's in the mix, though, because I'm craving some BBQ sausage.

And I'm sure there are other options. Plus, I shouldn't neglect to mention the original meetup location that Mellon_Collie set up at Friday's in Lincoln Square, before it turned into a travelling circus.

I'm down with whatever, since I dont frequent the Arlington area I have no clue what's around. I'm liking the sound of the outdoor exploration spot though, finals has kept me from getting out like I want and I'm craving some good explorin'. This will come right at the end of my break so it'll be the perfect way to end my week away from class.

Any discussion? Or is everyone busy helping with the Crab gumbo boil?

I'm leaning towards Al's, largely because it looks like the weather will be good for a small outdoor field trip afterwards. It's not even explicitly off-limits, so it's safe for the kids. Colter's would be the backup location, in case we arrive and find that the place has burned to the ground or been closed due to pistachio contamination, or something.

Sound alright?

And if anyone goes to the game, I'll be in Section C, left center field, row 13. They're still selling tickets for $4.

I haven't found out if I have tickets yet, but I might be attending the game as well. I'm voting for Al's, mainly cause I really want to go to that outdoor spot afterwards. I'm really looking forward to getting out, it's been all work and no play for me.

Al's it is, then! I've updated the event listing accordingly.

Al's has a website, too... but it's down. If any of the Arlington crew can confirm that they're still open, that would be nice. I'd call, but I'm swamped at work and at home (still picking up the pieces after getting broken into last week -- they stole my Swiftmas gift, damn their eyes).

Your house got broken into? That sucks!! I'm sorry to hear that. Did you lose a lot of stuff?

And yes, Al's is still open.

The saving grace was supposed to be that we didn't have anything worth stealing... but not a month ago, my daughter got a laptop, and put a ton of effort into making it all hers. She loaded all her pictures from the trip we just took to the tiger sanctuary into it, customized all the options, spent hours on it. It's gone.

They rifled through her room, probably because they found cash from her job as a carhop at Sonic. They took a box of old coins that she'd been adding to since she was 5 -- nothing in there that was worth more than face value, but it was really important to her.

They swiped her wallet, which means she's got to get new ID, which is really a pain in the butt. Which is why I get REALLY PISSED when I hear about someone finding a wallet in an abandonment or some such, and not putting it in a box and sending it to its owner. Those pictures and such don't mean anything to you, but they could mean everything to the person it got stolen from. SEND THE DAMN WALLET BACK.

My other daughter left her digital camera at the house, and they found it too. So she lost all her pictures from the tiger sanctuary, too.

They grabbed the game systems -- all a generation old, an XBox, PS2, and Game Cube (they left the N64). But that's not as bad as the armful of DVDs -- they took all our Miyazaki anime, including the out-of-print original Totoro dub. I'm sure they'll enjoy "Whisper of the Heart". At least they left Fruits Basket.

I didn't lose much that was mine -- I don't have anything, I only get stuff for the kids. But they did take my backpack, which contained my Swiftmas present as well as the battery-backup unit that powered the orange Christmas lights.

They didn't take her snake, right? Maybe they were scared of it... too bad he wasn't out of his cage that day.

I was hoping that they would have been scared of the snake and stayed out of her room. No such luck... she says it looks like they scooted his cage a bit while poking around. But the snake is fine, and cute as ever. Here's a pic from December:

Als sounds great. Count me in (I've already taken off work early so it's official).
That really really sucks about the break in. I wonder why they didn't take the n64 though.

Ok, so I think I'm gonna be at this one. Miss you guys and can't wait till this saturday.

And then, it asks the question: in a cold, uncaring, ruthless world of corporate slavery and assembly-line experiences . . . how is it possible to still live a life with strength, and passion, and with a soul that is still truly alive?

Damn Robert...so sorry to hear about your break-in, especially the things your daughter lost, like her coin collection. You're right about those things...they're priceless.

Sometimes the world just sucks. I've been experiencing a bit of that myself lately. Hope some really good things happen for you guys soon!

Wow... there are 9 "yes" and a "maybe" for this meetup. That doesn't mean anything, of course -- we're not the "advance planning" types -- but it would be a heckuva party if we even came close. (Fortunately, it's still a great time even when there's just a couple of folks.) And the weather looks to be perfect for a mass outdoor exploration afterwards.

See you at Al's in Arlington, 6pm, ask for Amanda!
