Ledbetter Station used to have a few roach motels (pay by the hour) nearby, and the station on the TRE line that serves the medical center has some nicer hotels within walking distance.

Hmm... perhaps some urban geography may be useful for our visitor from OKC. Oak Cliff: A patchwork of working-class neighborhoods. Mostly good parts, some awesomely wonderful parts (Kessler Park, close to where we're meeting up), and a few rough parts that give the whole southeast section of town a bad name. South Dallas: A few very good parts, but a large number of very rough parts. I-35E marks something of a dividing line between the two, though the geography can be hotly debated at times. Ledbetter Station is in one of those rougher parts of South Dallas. It's an area that's trying hard, but still ain't there yet. The first task would be to get *rid* of the roach motels. If there are any left, I would *not* recommend them for an out-of-towner new to the hard side of town. Forest Lane Station, on the other hand, is actually in the suburb of Garland. The station (and the motel, which is right across the street) is sandwiched between an industrial area and a string of bills-paid apartments. It's more like the good parts of Oak Cliff -- working folks just trying to get by. I've gone to the quickie-mart by Forest Lane Station, and I've hung out at the station late at night after missing a train, without any worries. The times I've gone to Ledbetter Station, I've stuck close to the well-lit station, and there's no way I'm wandering up the street after dark.

The geography less was well appreciated! Glad to have some friends.. er e-friends who are willing to help a newcomer! So is the meet going to be at Hunky's? Also, there any good concerts, local shows or anything anyone know of going on Fri or Sat night? I think I have about.. 15 hours of my 72 booked.. Ive gt a little more to go. | | | File this under the "crazy idea" heading, but you might not even have to drive to Dallas. Just take the Amtrak Heartland Flyer from OKC to FW, $36 bucks each way, then take the TRE to Dallas ($5). Only problem is that the TRE doesn't run on Sundays. I'm assuming you can't stay over through Monday. But if you're really into the idea, I'd be willing to drive you to FW for the 5:25 departure time. (Amtrak does have a train from Dallas to FW, but it leaves at 12:20, and you have to sit at FW for three and a half hours while we're having hamburgers!)

| | | I don't have any idea where I am going to stay yet, I figure hopefully -fingers crossed- Priceline, hotwire, or expeida will have something cheap for me when I get paid this Friday. Anyone have some suggestions? I could stay over through Sunday if I needed to! I am just not sure if I will have all the funds for another night at a hotel or what not. Tomorrow sometime I am going to sit down and try and figure out everything I wanna do and see if I can do it without driving, that would be pretty nice. Although driving might be a little more nice if I wanna get out and explore the malls or catch a movie, assuming everything isn't in one square location. I dont know yet, but if that offer still holds Robert I may ask to take you up on it if I decide not to drive! Anyone know anyone looking for a weekend room mate the 11th-14th? Hah.

| | | I poked around a little and found out that the cheap motel by Forest Lane Station is the Carousel Motel, if you want to call them up. You can pull up Google Street View and look around. There's a pawn shop next door, then a bowling alley, and a convenience store the other way, so the whole area is pretty well self-contained for the cheap traveler. For a little less adventure, there's a "Studio 6" right by where the comedian guy is playing (and the train station, too). But that's Motel 6's longer-stay brand, so I don't know what the cost is to stay over a weekend. To be fair, Dallas is still known as a car-centered town. Bike lanes are non-existent. But we're starting to figure out this whole "transit" thing. DART's website has a page for "Explore on DART" that has listings for things like movie theaters (the Angelika and Magnolia are awesome indie-oriented theaters) and hotels (at the higher-end, doesn't include Motel 6 and the Carousel).

| | | Very interesting. I am about to sit down and run the gambit on all this and try and find everything there is to do in Dallas and see what all I want to do for the weekend. Thanks for all the help! Do you know about what time the meet is going to be Sunday, where, how long, anything happening after the food!

| | | if you want to catch a movie go to the dollar theater, it's $1 matinee and $1.75 for the late show, best bet if you're trying to save money but still have a good time, and all the movies are new ones that aren't in big theaters anymore but haven't come out to dvd yet.

| | | My two cents: Dallas on a budget......There's lots of stuff to see at fair park, the aquarium there is halfway decent and alot cheaper than the Dallas World Aquarium (wanna say 5 bucks). If you can afford it then check out the Dallas World though....its pretty incredible. It was like 42 bucks for two of us a couple weekends ago. Then there is The Dallas Heritage Village South of downtown. Lots of cool old buildings most from around Dallas. http://www.dallasheritagevillage.org/ Then as Robert B said Deep Ellum would be worth a stroll down at night although its not what it used to be you can still catch some good bands and stuff down there. Angry Dog is a cool place to grab a drink and a bite (chicken fingers are good), its on Commerce st. And the Old Red Museum in the Courthouse is really great as Oph. pointed out. Very informative about Dallas History. But here are a couple pics from Dallas World Aquarium. It's a really cool place, but its a bit tough to take pics in there due to the humidity and glass.

| | | Kinda far in advance, but I just noticed that if we continue the 2nd Sunday schedule through September, it will coincide with something really cool -- the opening weekend of the DART Green Line in Deep Ellum. So I'm definitely figuring we'll have another Deep Ellum meetup in September. That pizza place with the second-floor balcony was great, if it's still open. And parking? Who needs parking in Deep Ellum when there's a perfectly good train? Or at least, will be. Meanwhile, for *this* month, it's at Hunky's in Oak Cliff/Bishop Arts, THIS SUNDAY 6/14 at 2pm. For those new to the forums, check out the "Events" linky there on yer left, or just go straight to the event page for the venerable "dee-eff-dub-meet-n-greet".

| | | Hey everyone...
Sorry I missed the last meet. I was busy moving and not having a computer that worked properly. I finally got a new computer and after much work on it, I finally figured out how to fix it and make it work. I'm very proud of myself...
Anyway, I'm back now and will be posting some pictures soon of some cool places I've found in my new 'hood, yo.
I hope to see everyone at the next meet n greet.

| | | Oops, it's sneaking up on us. Sun 7/12 is the scheduled date -- but I'm not sure I'll make it, because I may try to sneak down to the Austin meetup. Perhaps we should declare July to be a vacation month, and encourage DFW 'splorers to take a trip down I-35?

That sounds like fun, but I don't think I have the funds for such a trip right now. I will know more in about a week though.

| | | Last chance for anyone to offer to host the July DFW meetup! I'm pretty sure I won't be available (even if I don't make it to Austin), and I don't want to leave it hanging. If we don't meet locally in July, we can meet up in August... and if it's too hot, then we'll just get together in September, in Deep Ellum to celebrate the Green Line opening. You can do a surprising amount of location scouting from the train...

| | | The reports are in, and the Austin meetup got off to a great start! Now, we need to figure out what to do in DFW for August. Just the basics: Where, and When. When, because it would be nice to not pick the same day as Austin. Some possiblities: * Keep it where it is now (2nd Sunday), 'cause we wuz here first * Move it back where it was before (1st Saturday) * Come up with something new altogether * Or how about we alternate months? DFW meets one month, Austin meets the next. That last one is intriguing... we're close enough to each other that there's going to be cross-pollination, and monthly sometimes gets to dragging along anyway. Of course, I had this Big Idea that we should have September in Deep Ellum for the Green Line opening -- oops, if we have next month, then September is Austin's. But the new rail line isn't exactly UE-related (except in certain specific circumstances involving equipment not normally carried around on a train). Where... well, that's always anyone's guess. Let's figure out "When" first.
