User Rating / Voting
< on 10/1/2003 6:26 PM >

The first test of user rating / voting is now available. Underneath each post there is the option of voting it useful or not useful. Each vote increases or decreases the user's Rating by 1 point.

You can't vote for your own posts, you can't vote twice, etc etc.

Right now it simply displays "Rating" under your name, but when this feature is done it will display stars.

Try it out!

Cool! Let the Ratings War and the penis waving begin.

When do the Neilsen books come out? I really want to keep track of my ratings compared to those of K-os and 'Everybody Loves Raymond'.

On a serious note, I think that this is a neat idea. Would it be possible to show a rating for each thread, so others will know that a particular thread actually contains useful information instead of the standard descent into silliness?

Also... You don't have to vote on every post. Not voting is effectively a neutral response to the post, which will not skew the totals. Just making sure people don't feel they "have to" vote one way or the other, since in this case the non-vote will be just as effective at helping keep the rating system on target.

Does that mean that the people who post more often will quickly rack up ratings in the thousands while less frequent posters will hover around 5-10?

Could you clarify the ranking system?

Yes, if all their posts are useful. But this is good -- if you post a lot of useful stuff, you should have a high rating.

Can you give those links a smaller footprint?

They tend to break up the flow of the threads. Maybe you could put very small +/- links up in the top bar of the message, rather than in its footer.

But, it can make a person that doesn't post much, even though they have posted all useful info, seem less important as a poster.
example:
Poster A has only 10 posts of amazingly good info, and gets rated useful by everyone. so say he has a 40

Poster B posts TONS, only some of which is useful, and ends up with a 40 as well.

Now it will appear at first that both posters are equal, but really they aren't...

Just my take on this, maybe I'm wrong.

Hopefully you'll be smart enough to read that into your interpretation of the rating number.

And besides, they both gave the same amount of net good info, so they should be equal.

I guess it goes to show that poster A should post more of his wonderful knowledge.

A little bit of a spectacular thing is rougly equal to lots of a less spectacular but really good thing, so it all works out.

Y'know what, personally, I don't like the rating system one smeg of a bit. Wanna know why? Because it's just a penis waving contest. One stupid person could go through and boost his best friend/accomplice to record ratings, while destroying the rating of other, more serious members.

Peh. It's not that I'm not grateful to Av for coding it, and everything, but I just find it useful or neccisary here. Maybe a Spam-Meter would be better.

Maybe a 1-10 scale would be more useful than a system that allows ratings to go infinitely high or infinitely low.

Wouldn't a system like those "rate me" sites would be provide a more accurate representation of the usefulness of people's posts? It wouldn't really be affected by posting volume once an average for the user was established...

In fact, you could put the user’s rating number in a different colour until a certain number of posts (say 10) had been rated. That would let people know that a good mathematical average had not yet been established.

Sure, lets give it a go, but I do think an averaged rating system from -10 - +10 would be good. That would make it show more realistically how useful your posts have been, without beeing thrown askew by volume (once you get a few votes, though right at the start they would be a bit awry).

I'm going to add my name to the request that, if you are really going to go ahead with this system, that you use a relative or percentile-based tally system.

The biggest problem with percentile systems is that a person can make a single post, get 1 "yes" votes, and have a "100%" rating. This isn't really very accurate.

Let's try this system out. Switching to a percentile system in the future will be easy.

So to understand the real meanings of the stars, am I going to have to buy a color wheel, or consult a psycic or something?

It just seems a little confusing now, at least to me...

This definitely sounds like a popularity contest.

A rating number based on this system will never have an influence on how I perceive the context of any given post or forum user.

In my opinion it clutters up the board.

In a thread I pay attention to, I read every post, no matter how useful. I'm not ready to rely on a skewed number total to tell me when to pay attention.

I mean what really is the purpose of it all? Why would it make the board better or easier to use?
