This definitely sounds like a popularity contest. ....

In a thread I pay attention to, I read every post, no matter how useful. ......

Why would it make the board better or easier to use?

I agree entirerly. I look at every post in a thread I will read, not just those from the most common posters. I dont really see how this would improve the forum.

It's an attempt to get people to stop posting crap. So many threads are filled with totally useless posts.

Like i've said 4 times already, LETS JUST GIVE IT A TRY.

It's easy to judge something, but let's try it out, see how well it works.

Thanks for explaining that for me Av, that makes sense to me then, if it cuts down on crap people post. I didnt really think about that.

Will voting be allowed in the "Other" forum? I could see that skewing peoples ratings, with posts that have to do with nothing (UE Ralated).

I'm not sure the votes should count in the other forum. Possibly for both post count or for rating/voting thing. It just inflates the crap and post count. It's somewhat acceptable to get silly or post pretty useless posts in there, so I don't think that peoples' ratings should be knocked by their posts in the other section. You can counteract this by also not letting those posts add to the post count. Anyone else think this makes sense?

In fact, you could put the user’s rating number in a different colour until a certain number of posts (say 10) had been rated. That would let people know that a good mathematical average had not yet been established.

Posted by Avatar-X
The biggest problem with percentile systems is that a person can make a single post, get 1 "yes" votes, and have a "100%" rating. This isn't really very accurate.

hmmmmmm... don't you hate it when people don't read your posts???

I was responding to kowalski, not you. Get over yourself.

At 10 posts it would still be fairly inaccurate. The first 10 posts of someone is often quite useless, should this ruin their rating forever?

Maybe you should come up with a non X non * rank indicator for the zeros - having em start out looking like a neg is bad news...

Maybe a yin-yang indicating the balance of having equal positive to negative votes...

it will help, hopefully. Before, the stars were based on postcount, so there was a big drive to accumulate posts.

Or we could just accept that people are going to post what they want to post, and not attempt to use market- or merit-based systems to cajole them into line.

I've been on boards with rating systems before. Mostly people just ignore them. At most, you occasionally look over and see that you're getting 4.5 out of 5 or whatever, and feel warm and fuzzy inside for two seconds.

It's like back in elementary school, when the teacher would put stars for participation up on a chart with everyone's names. The kids that were interested in class anyways and wanted to participate and get stars got them. The clowns and troublemakers could care less about the stars, and after awhile learned to denigrate them whenever they had the opportunity.

I don't think a rating system is wholly useless. I think you're partly right that it is a good and perhaps occasionally useful measure of the quality of a user's participation on the board. But I think it should be less apparent. Why not just put the rating data in the user's profile, rather than displaying it in big tacky stars every time they post? That way, if you wanted to know, you could go into the profile and find out some measure of the overall quality of their posts. But it wouldn't be everywhere. And the stars thing is just really obtuse. And tacky, but I already said that.

In the end, if it were up to me, I'd rather you spend the programming time adding to the profile options and so forth. It would be really nice to be able to change my e-mail address.

I strongly disagree with the idea that 40 posts worth one-point each are as good as four posts worth ten-points each. They aren't; they're tedious. It would be useful to discourage people from posting messages that don't say anything and reward people for having the restraint to not post when they don't have anything to say.

I agree with Macsbug that the coloured star system isn't intuitive. Maybe a bar whose width varies would be more obvious.

I'm also not entirely sure about using the word "useful" -- it seems to exclude posts that are just funny or interesting. Maybe "Did you like this post?" would be better.

All that said, I agree with Av that we should give the current setup a try for a month; we'll probably think of several ways to improve it after that. And I definitely think it's a good idea not just to rank people by the sheer quantity of their posts.

No, but seriously, I do understand where he's comeing from. He's trying to do a testrun and all we've done is bitch before it's been tested to see if there really are problems, not just theoretical problems.

Peronally, I would like an averaged out system, but I'm still wanting to see how this one works. If it works good, then great. If not, after awhile, then we raise our voices and say what we felt wasn't working.

I agree with both Ninj and Jester. (Hey, look at that - mods banding together under a single banner. Stop the presses.) I'm not sure if this is the way to do it, however that's why it's a test. Give it 4 weeks, and use that time to offer constructive criticism about the system, and maybe even think of some ways which might make it better, or decide that it's not working at all.

Patience.

I already have an X... guys, be honest, do I suck?

Seeing that I *think* my reputation 'round these parts is not that of "lamer", I'd have to go with Jester on an averaged system. That is, the proportion of good posts vs. bad posts is what gets you your score.
