My vote goes for this syntax.

C.

My vote also goes for that format.

And a thumbs up to Crossfire for using "syntax" in a sentence.

I think really small arrows depicting the overall value of the post would be cool, then next to it have a ratio. So 12/16 with a up arrow would mean 12 people liked this out of 16. With a down arrow, 12 didn't like it out of 16.

Then it says, vote: with both arrows you can click on to vote. It would be more compact, maybe fit into a corner somewhere.

Also maybe lower the threshold of the stars so 1 star = -10 to +10 votes?

Just some ideas 8]

How about putting "Moderator" under the mod's names, and letting the star system mean the same thing for everyone?

Whatever. Av likes it so give it a try -- if you think it's worthless don't bother with it. I won't be. ;)

I've already found that rating thing helpful. I had something to say in the "Other" forum. I didn't know if I took the topic too seriously (Jinx = Losers, or something like that) or if I was on the money. It turns out that 3 of 4 people appreciated that post, so I know that I was somewhere in the ballpark. I think the rating system will help people know if they're posting crap or real opinions. I just hope it doesn't become some sort of personal vendetta thing. Thanks, Av, you have now helped me become a more concientious poster (or is that "poser"? LOL).

Hopefully, the volume of real votes will outweigh the volume of "vendetta" votes.

For example: Let's say you make 100 posts, and on each post, 40 people give you a vote. That's 4000 votes.

Now, if one person has something against you, they can go and vote "no" 100 times on each of your posts, but that would only take your rating down by 100 points. Assuming the other 40 people liked your posts, you'd still have a rating of 3900.

MC, are you confusing 'real opinions' with 'popular' opinions? It seems as though if a person posts meaningful stuff that happens to contradict popular opinion, then they'll end up getting a big pile of negatives. (conversely a person who adds nothing new but supports a lot of other posters will get a lot of positives)

If you're looking to weed out garbage posts, don't ask if people 'like' it or not, ask if it was meaningful or useful or something like that. 'Like' just turns it into a popularity contest.

I'm sure I'll be swimming in X's in no time regardless though.

Hmm, robbie raises a good point. The purpose of this forum is not to entertain the others, but rather to provide real, useful content / information.

Should we change the terminology from "like" to "useful"?

Yes, I think "Useful" would be a better wording, however....
Robbie, This is what I meant by a "vendetta". Basing your vote on whether the thread agrees with your personal, or "popular", opinion, or if it was actually a thread with a direct line of reason behind it. Perhaps I should have been more clear earlier. On a side note, I would have thought that since I posted against that thread (or at least against its particular leanings), and given its popularity, I would have thought that I would have gotten a 0 rating. It seems that someone thought that I had something to say....

I think we should just test the ratings for a month or two. Personally, I'm not in love with this feature. I like to make up my mind myself about whether or not someone is smart and brings good points to the discussion table. So, to me, the ratings feature isn't terribly useful.

However, it's not as if you HAVE pay attention to the ratings, right? I know if I'm following a thread, I'm going to read every post, whether or not there are Xs under the poster's name or a bunch of stars. If you're afraid that you'll get a bad rating... Well, either you truly do post garbage, or you don't but need an ego check-up.

Sorry, Max, but I'm not British. Lexicographers now recognize that, due to the immense differences between spelling and in some cases pronounciation, English and American are two different languages. At any rate, I was playing off of the lack of one letter in the spelling leading to a new term, applied however lightly.
