The Janion Must Be Preserved to protect the true reason why it was constructed at that peticular location ,,
let us ask ourselves about the true reason why it has been preserved all these years ,,
let us wonder why all the homeless hang around its welcoming front ,,
If it is torn down , will we be ripping out the very soul that this garden city was based on ?

My thoughts exactly.

I only recently discovered this thread (through a friend) and it sounds like you've all had some amazing adventures. Guess I've come to the party a little late, but I'm trying my best to play catch-up. I've been through the Hall of Wonders and Douglas Darkie, and I'm looking into various other sites that you've all referenced.

My question is this: can anyone provide some tips / suggestions / hints on what to look into or research next? I agree that it's much more satisfying to find things myself, but I'm at a bit of a loss as to where to go from here. What's the next logical step?

There's a very, very old building close to the water near Rock Bay that has a very interesting secret.

On that note, does anyone know exactly what the "rock bay remediation project" entails, and what it means for our old buildings?

If you go by what they say on the interweb, sounds like they will leave the building.

ROCK BAY
Victoria’s Power House
Rock Bay was the site of a manufactured coal gas plant, constructed in 1860, making it the power house for the growth of Victoria as a city. The site became contaminated as a result of its gas works operations. The overall site is about 3.23 hectares, including the bay, and contains three heritage buildings that the remediation work has been designed to retain.

That was taken from this web site. http://www.tc.gc.c...ay_newsletter2.htm

Yay!

Thanks for doing the research I was too lazy to do. Even more so because it turned out to be good news .

The remediation is taking a long time, must be a lot of poisoned ground. Great they are saving the heritage buildings. An interesting area with a few secrets indeed.

Wow, its a good thing I had to wait 7 days to make a post, because it just just about that long to read this thread. I am relatively new to Victoria and don't have much to add, I have seen the tunnels in the basement of the Museum, headed across to parliament, they look the same as the basement hallway does, not too exciting. also i am 99% sure there are no tunnels in or out of the Union Club, the creepy little staircase on the side just leads to a dirty furnace room that doesnt seem to have anything 'bricked over'.

Cheers

Alright. I'll bite: how are you 99% sure?

I have been in pretty much every room in the club, not that anything above level one matters much. The basement is probably not even 7 feet high, and as stated didnt have any covered archways or trap doors or anything. But there is the strong chance that im blind, hence 99%.

Unless you know something that I dont......

Indeed. Eye witnesses reported finding a long, bricked, covered passageway, discovered during a road-work binge a few decades ago from the Union Club to the The Strathcona Hotel.

Very interesting. I can always make an excuse to go there again, perhaps i should open my eyes.

EDIT: after doing a search and re-reading some posts, it seems apparent that this tunnel did exist, but I am relatively confident that it is inaccessable.

I've heard from numerous sources that the Union Club had passages into brothels for the more upscale visitors wishing to be discrete. I'm not sure if they meant Johnson street (which used to be all saloons and brothels) or Strathcona, however.

True.

An acquaintance has been in there for a Christmas party and 'accidently' wandered off to the basement. He was headed off before he could get a good look, but he said that theres definitely something down there.

Hopefully this year he'll be invited again.. lol
